I'm just finishing an Arduino project that uses CD4021 shift registers for inputs (4 of them for 32 inputs total) and TPIC6B595 for outputs (12 of them for 96 outputs total). You only need 6 pins to handle all of that (3 for inputs and 3 for outputs). Of course you can chain as many of either/both as you need. If you need a hand, just say.

So, was the failure successful?

totm aug 2023 What funny/interesting thing happened in your life today?

I usually just try and run the saw in reverse, but I don't have left handed drill bits, so it doesn't work with holes. -

Today, in a serendipitous turn of events, after days of working on a thing where a timing belt is a core element and the precise length of it is crucial, I decided that before I commit and drill some holes in the only aluminium plate I have at hand, I should probably double check the measurements, so I drill the holes in a piece of scrap plywood and arrange the elements as they would be in the final product, only to realize that the belt is shorter than specified. It's not a problem in itself, the actual length is not crucial, but I need to know what it is so I can design the rest of the mechanism around it. I don't have a habit of doing that, so yeah, Me 1; Murphy 0. -
The Upcoming Movies (and Movie Trailers) MegaThread!

I know from personal experience that it's doable in 30 days (Robot and Empire included), when you have nothing else to do. -
The Upcoming Movies (and Movie Trailers) MegaThread!
Shpaget replied to StrandedonEarth's topic in The Lounge
Another thing, I'm curious to see just how much of Robot and Empire they're going to include. After all, they are one big story. There's enough material for several seasons, should they attempt to closely follow the story. It just remains to decide the reading order. I know Asimov himself suggested chronological order, as opposed to publishing order, but there are arguments against that: https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/2335/what-order-should-asimovs-foundation-series-be-read-in -
The Upcoming Movies (and Movie Trailers) MegaThread!

I'm kind of excited about this, but I'm worried how they'll pull it off. In any case, perhaps it's time to start rereading it? -
Doesn't really matter, just don't let the days go by and water hold you down.

Sure. You get the picture of my lathe and the surrounding mess included for free. The mill is a no name, but if you look at Grizzly G0619 you'll find something that looks like it came from the same castings. The lathe is actually a nice little EMCO Compact 8, of Austrian pedigree, from before the manufacturing was moved to the East. I'm not in the flower of my youth either, but consider the purchase of these two machines some of my best decisions. As for hindsight, when I was getting into high school and making my mind about what to do, I wanted to become a wood turner, but my parents, both veterinarians with college (and PhD in case of my Mom), managed to convince me that trade school was a poor choice and that with college I could do whatever I wanted (which is not exactly entirely true) and that 8 years of me learning French in elementary school would go to waste if I decided to go that way. High school turned to be a waste of time for me, and I think I'd be much happier in a trade school. 20 years later, I got around to doing what I want and like. It's not late for you. Get yourself a nice little second hand machine and start making stuff. I started with a lathe and got the milling machine about a year and a half later. -

I finally got around to fixing the issue I had with the vise on my milling machine. When I bought the machine, it came with the vise, and since I wanted to start making chips as soon as I could, I neglected a few things. The previous owner had the vise mounted with two different bolts to the bed and the rotating base had one screw missing and the remaining two were of wrong type so they would spin in the base and I had trouble tightening them. I've been avoiding rotating the base since it was a pain to get the bolts to grab onto something and not turn idly, but yesterday I had to rotate the vise and, of course was unable to tighten it, so today I finally decide to fix the issue. I got rid of the assorted screws and installed nice looking hex M10 bolts and T nuts, with custom thick washers to replace the dinky thin ones that got warped out of shape. Now it not only works great, but looks much better. -
Not joke. It really happened. As to how he survived, luck and chance.

5 launches per day is still only ~500 kg. It would take them half a year to match one Starship launch, so there might be market out there, but can they match the price? Tater, to ease your mind, you didn't recursify the thread. It's all Gargamel's fault.

~80 extra ISP is huge, but CH4 is only about half as dense as RP1 (even near freezing point). How does that factor in?

Without double checking, it sound like job for Autohotkey, your friendly neighbour automation tool. -
So we have some new data to work with: 10 000 g 4 000 - 5 000 mph 200 pounds payload counterweight detaches at the same time as the rocket 1 minute coast after detachment from the centrifuge 1 minute booster burn starting at 200 000 ft 10 seconds orbit insertion burn What I'm interested in is how are they going to catch the counterweight, without exploding the facility.

My parents signed me up for courses when I was about 7 and I continued those for about 10 years. Also, I had English in school, starting when I was about 11 and those stopped only after I left college. On top of that, as a kid I read a lot, and soon realized that reading stuff that was originally written in English, was better than available translations. Then when I started work, it was almost exclusively done in English, and the employer provided some intensive job oriented English classes.

What is a dumb thing you can do with magnets?
Shpaget replied to VictoryNeverFail's topic in The Lounge
They've got a sticky side and the other, but you don't know which one is which until you put two of them together, and even then they can switch up on you without even realizing. Just like they always switch so they stick to iron, no matter how you turn them. Shifty little magic buggers. -
Landing with only one leg in the circle? Sloppy. We want to see them bullseyes. If it landed as much off center as it did but laterally, instead of longitudinally, one of the legs would have missed the barge. I'll chalk it up to night landing, but near miss, nonetheless.

Since May 15, inclusive, Croatia had a total of 9 deaths 25 new diagnosed cases (3 cases/4 deaths since May 23), and as of yesterday 55 active cases. That is all good and dandy, but leads to talks about opening the tourist season for foreigners. The economic pressure is high. While Slovenia is doing fine Coronawise, the situation in Germany and Italy (three countries that provided most foreign tourists last year, and are traditionally in the top list) is still far from perfect, and last year we had about 4 million tourists just from Italy and Germany. I'm kind of concerned that with all the efforts Croatia has put into preventing a major spread (and was quite successful, if I might say so), it will all be for nothing if (potentially) thousands of infected come over.

Getting choosy now, are we? But yeah, it's 3:25 AM for me, so I'll wait until I wake up and pretend it's live, but with fast forward and rewind capability.
