What's the last thing you said to someone?

"A little bit late." Referring to the stopping position of a model train. We're programming a shunting sequence. -
Magnetic Rail Rocket Assist For Starship X
Shpaget replied to Spacescifi's topic in Science & Spaceflight
For tests only. There are only a handful operational maglev systems (all in China), and only one of them is high speed. It's a lot more complicated than that. You are proposing to build the largest vacuum chamber in the world, by a huge margin, shove the highest speed (by large margin) land vehicle in it and shoot it out the other end, suddenly making it the fastest atmospheric flying vehicle (by large margin). You haven't presented us with any numbers. The sweet spot for how fast you can go through atmosphere and the sweetspot for how fast you can make your train go won't necessarily be the same number. Propellant is cheap. Megastructures are not. -
Magnetic Rail Rocket Assist For Starship X

Neither are established technologies. Existing maglev trains are little more than technology demonstrators. Vacuum chambers for transport are not even that. What Elon Musk happily appropriates and calls Hyperloop has been talked about for over 200 years and is no closer to "established" than in the 18th century. It's a gimmick. When you run out of vacuum tube and hit the atmosphere, you die. Finally, ideas of space guns have been around since Jules Vern. They don't work. -
It would be better called "the island of relative stability", since the stuff on the island isn't bone melting radioactive like the surrounding elements. It's only face melting.

totm aug 2023 What funny/interesting thing happened in your life today?
Shpaget replied to Ultimate Steve's topic in The Lounge
Wait until you realize that they are usually specced as +/- 5%. Find the -5% ones and get rich. -
There are no gaps in the periodic table, so any newly discovered element will be well in the region of being so radioactive that it's entirely unusable.

Because it wasn't cooked properly. Drumsticks and butt are ok, the rest is barely edible.

Thread to discuss positive things in a general manner
Shpaget replied to GearsNSuch's topic in The Lounge
Yesterday I bought a milling machine. Today we managed to manhandle it into the workshop. I'm super excited about it, but unfortunately it is entirely in freedom units which I don't speak. I figure it would be cheaper and better to install DRO than trying to find metric leadscrews, nuts and dials, and mess with the mechanics. It came with a decent bunch of accessories (again, most of them imperial), so I still have some expenses in my near future, but overall I'm happy. It found a nice place next to the lathe and I have some cleaning and adjusting to do before it returns to functional state (we removed xy table for transport). I also think I'll use this opportunity to make some drawers for all the tools for the mill and lathe. Happy times. -
Most places here sell only those fake non winning ones, which wouldn't be a problem if they told you in advance, but here you have to buy it first, and only later you find out if it's good or not. I think I might lodge a complaint with the consumer protection agency. That sort of bussines practice would not fly when buying lemons.

I'm not a picky eater. There are some things that I like more than others, and some things that I would avoid given an alternative, but there's that one thing that I can't stand. My dad used to make something like patties from left over mashed potatoes. He'd sautee some onions and fry up some bacon, add some seasoning and mix it all with mashed potatoes, form the mass into patties and toss in a pan with a bit of oil to brown it a bit. Nothing fancy, an ok side dish, right? I have no objection to any of the ingredients individually or in combination with other food, but that specific combination is something that makes my stomach turn. Even the smell is something that I can't stand. I don't know why, I have no reasonable explanation, it just is and my family has accepted that I don't eat that.

Toughguy Gravity and zero g pregnancy

Following up on my previous post about 3D printer, this is my first print with actual purpose in mind, other than testing. It's a mounting part for a roll up curtain that broke. The original is white, my print is grey. And the closeup of the hook thing on top. The hook feature is 3.15 mm wide (3.0 mm nominal) and 2.3 mm high nominal. The layer lines are barely visible to the naked eye in good light. I printed two, one as close to original as possible, the other with a small modification intended to make it sturdier. The bottom was connected to the raft and supports, it could use a bit more filing, sanding and cleaning up, but that is not functional part of the item. I'm not sure how well suited the material (Elegoo grey resin) is for mechanical stresses and how it will perform as a sliding bearing (certainly not as good as some engineering plastics), but beggars can't be choosers and I don't have any high performance engineering resin. It was printed at 0.05mm layer height, 9 seconds per layer, a bit more than 3 hours total print time + 30 minutes in curing chamber. Pinging @Fraston @cubinator @adsii1970 @richfiles since you guys showed interest in my previous post.

Toughguy Gravity and zero g pregnancy

10 ft diameter = 3 m, meaning that most adults would have their head "above" axis of rotation. So their heads would fall upwards while the rest of the body downwards. This is beyond just disorienting. Forget about moving around in that environment. Lying down on the floor may be tolerable if keep very still. Check this Tom Scott's video on what happens when you try to move around in rotating environment. And that room is 22 ft (6,7 m) in diameter, Tom is not standing perpendicular to the wall (it's actually closer to parallel), not spinning nearly at 1g etc. 10 ft diameter for 1g gravity simulation is not nearly enough. Coriolis will make you suffer. -
Last week I got myself Elegoo Mars. I am still testing stuff out, but so far I am very impressed with it. If you have a small thing you have in mind, I offer to print and take some photos so you can see if it's satisfactory for you. I could also ship it to you if, for some reason, you see no issues in giving snail mail address to a complete stranger.

So, what's the power source to trigger the fusion?
-
It's also one of the best sources of drinkable water we know of. It doubles as decent precursor for exceptional fuel, cleaning agent and plethira of other uses.

Do the books come with a label "Warning! Reading this book may expose you to Cosmic Radiation, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects and other reproductive harm." You know, because you removed part of the shielding.

Hmm, haven't thought of that, but 50 mm won't get you much resolution, even with diffraction limited optics. Anyway, the "less than 50 mm " is weird way to put it, since 2 mm aperture is less than 50, and would be useless for the purpose.

This does not compute.

I got stuck with French. I had History, Geography, Sociology, Politics, Economy, Art and probably some other things I can't remember now. All in French. I don't live in a French speaking country. I am not proficient in French, and am an idiot for allowing myself to be talked into that program. Waste of time since I did not learn French (I had been learning it for 8 years prior to enrolling in that program) and those additional four years did not do much. It only led to frustration since my knowledge of the subject got graded not only by itself, but also took into account every error in spelling and grammar of my crappy French. If I could turn back the time, if I could find a way, I'd take back those years that hurt me and I'd run away. I don't know why I did those things I did. I should have gone with my choice of school and not let my parents influence me. It took them about 10 years after I finished the damn thing to admit it was a mistake.

Can't you conjure up some "office work" that you can do from home while sick? Just up your Alt+Tab game for those "How're you feeling?" moments.
-
Actually, not. We have half decent ability to pinpoint the direction of sound. See the video for what happens when you lose that ability.

Earlier I posted in the "positive"thread about building a CNC machine, a hot wire foam cutter. I did some test cuts and it worked great. Well yesterday, I tested it out on full profile, trying to cut the thing I made the machine for and I hit a snag. The mechanics are smooth, but occasionally the wire starts to wobble inside the foam producing regular waves, making the part unusable. Apparently, this is not unheard of in foam cutting world and the solution is tension the wire, turn up the temperature, turn down the temperature, slow down, speed up, change the length of wire, thickness of wire... Well, I already made a huge pile of scrap foam and seems I'll have to make more until I get rid of the problem. It seems that the wire enters some harmonic interaction with the foam and changing some parameters should remove the effect.
