  1. So they have no idea where the ship is, but it's about to hit Ireland?
  2. You are, of course, right. In my defense, I did sneak that "real" qualifier. TLDR, big boom, a really big boom.
  3. Oh, so I suppose there's a bit of perceived personal injury/insult and like you said "betrayal". Also, extra kudos for managing to get away after growing up surrounded by such strong influence. PBS site is blocked for my region and won't play the video, I'll see if I can change my location somehow.
  4. Trying to figure out what happens at faster than light speed in real universe is inherently futile, since speed greater than c in meaningless. We could talk about what happens as the speed approaches c, but once at c, any mass has infinite kinetic energy, and our math falls apart (just like anything that happens to be in the path of that object).
  5. In Croatian, we have a word "nogavica" (noga = leg) for a single trouser leg, which is fine until you realize that the etymologically equivalent word but relating to upper body would be "rukavica" (ruka = arm), but "rukavica" means a glove. There is a word for a sleeve, which is "rukav", but then "nogavica" should be the word for a sock, but it's not; a sock is caller "čarapa", which has nothing to do with legs of feet, and word "nogav" doesn't exist.
  6. "My moon is rounder than yours!" - 243 Ida, Asteroid playground, circa 3 Ga
  7. I started a new Factorio map. This time Ribbon world. I opted for 24 tiles high, which I figured would be challenging enough, but without too much insane acrobatics needed for narrower maps (just regular acrobatics). I cleaned up the only biter nest on my "island" so, I'm safe from biter from now. My initial "island" is a bit short on coal (only 12k in starting area, and about 600k about a minute walk from base. On one side the island stretches for about 5 minute walk and there is some oil just on the other side of water, so that's good. On the other side, about two minute walk is about 4 M of iron ore and more biters, so I'm not sure which way to head to look for more coal, which I suspect I will need eventually, haven't decided yet. In any case I just automated red and green science and I'm preparing for some military conquest and to explore more area. Since the width of map is quite substantial I think I'll make a paved and conveyored highway from end to end. I'm also confining myself to leave some room for train tracks, which I already see as problematic since I insist on two track system, but also would like to have some sort of small bus for materials. The green science setup already takes more than half of the map height, so I'm not sure how that will work out. Fun times.
  8. Do we have more details regarding ground equipment? Is line of sight (outdoor mounting) required? What about urban settings where skyscrapers are in the way? They did some test using the first two sats, but are those results available? Regarding power consumption, we can take a look at a modern satellite phone, such as this one: https://satellitephonestore.com/files/support/inmarsat_bgan_support/technical_specifications.pdf It says <20W during transmission. That is way too much for a mobile phone battery, even at low bandwidth needed for a phone call. Broadband would need significantly higher power.
  9. Or they could have a private investor footing the bill. The genius part about satellite internet, if it proves to be viable, is that once the sats are up there is virtually not additional cost tosign up a new customer. There is no infrastructure to build, no trenches to dig for underground cables... etc. only a small and probably very cheap satellite dish and receiver. With just ten million subscribers (which is not a lot considering worldwide market) they could bring in billions in yearly revenue, so it's very interesting for investors. I sure would buy some shares.
  10. Well, we could ask Elon himself. He does tend to reply to technical questions fairly often and seems open and honest about stuff like this. Also, I am still convinced that he lurks on these forums, so yeah, Elon, if' you are reading this, please give us the knowledge. We have cookies.
  11. You can do it in Account settings.
  12. Ever wanted to be a medieval warlord, just prancing on your pony, looting and pillaging local villages? Bannerlord Perhaps you wanted to be a noble, collect an army and overthrow the king? Bannerlord Maybe you are more inclined to scheme behind everyone's back, so you marry into a noble family and climb the social ladder? Bannerlord Or if you prefer riches over fame, just build a trading empire, supplemented by global monopoly in silk production. Bannerlord
  13. So, the consensus is that most likely we are about 100 000 years from it going kablooey, but what are the error bars on that estimate? Also, what could be the reason for this brightness change? After all, it's very sudden (especially considering that we're on cosmological timescales). My stellar evolution is a bit rusty, so can somebody shed some light on this please? Do stars change fuel relatively suddenly or do the heavier elements start fusing long before the previous step is finished leading to a more gradual transition? Could this be one of those fuel transitions, which lead to pressure drop and sudden shrinkage? If so, can we expect a sharp rise and spike in luminosity before it settles back to its usual value?
  14. Any preference for a particular currency? I wouldn't want to cause inconvenience by sending you foreign stuff which you'd then have to exchange. Back to topic, though. Hey OP, why don't you give us some more info? Where is this museum supposed to be located? What other stuff you have collected? How big is your team? There are so many questions. Honestly, if I had a complete airframe that was sitting in my basement, I would have either found a use for it or given it away already.
  15. The factory must grow. All else is secondary. How's your iron? Always lacking? OT; I got back to Banished, after a period of not playing it. I started a new map, failed miserably, then another one and reached 200 population. So I decided to spice things up a bit and installed Colonial Charter. Now I'm at around 35 population, have stable food and housing situation. I'll need to work on long term sustainability, and will have to figure out all the new buildings. There are so many. Same with resources. So many new things to learn.
  16. The other day I learned to tie my shoes. Apparently, the way I was doing it for decades was wrong and that's why some of them kept untying after a dozen steps, driving me crazy. This new method proved to be 100% secure over the last few days. I had a talk with my parents about their failure to teach me the proper method.
  17. Even if the $20M prize was awarded in advance to every entrant, regardless of their success, it would still have been a failure. $20M is not nearly enough to do what they wanted to be done and they asked for private funding. Basically, they said: "We want you to do something insanely difficult and expensive and if you somehow succeed, we'll reimburse you for lunch money.". Most people capable of putting stuff on Moon are too busy doing actual work that pays their bills and don't have time to play impossible games. Some of them found patrons in form of huge multinational companies that foolishly bought into the slick marketing, and funded them for a while, but sooner or later, they all decided that enough was enough and the huge marketing opportunity turned out to be not so great. Google wanted too much, too quickly and offered no meaningful support along the way.
  18. They know that if they pay, you'll stop calling, and they like to talk to you. One of our clients also forgot to pay. When we called them, they assured us it would be done right away. After about a month and several more calls with assurances, explanations and excuses, we mentioned legal action and suddenly they got serious. Why would we stoop so low for such a small sum (it was about $150)? We told them that if it was such a small sum, they should have no problem paying it right away. The funds were in our account two hours later. They were never late again.
  19. Disassembled for their material? Potentially built over because Khufu really like that spot, but it was already taken by some long dead dude, so old Khufu brought in the bulldozers and cleared some space for himself. Also, take a look at Tutankhamuns tomb, which was buried under rubble for long enough that the area on top of it became residential area for workers. Perhaps your lost pyramids are still under the sand.
  20. Earlier you mentioned 100 N design. Was the load cell underrated or just faulty? Also, can we have some pics, please?
