WW2 BAD-T 2 - BDA AI Dogfight Tournament [SEMIFINALS]
tetryds replied to tetryds's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
When the next tournament starts, which will be on 1.1, I don't plan to change threads but some rules and mods may change. Just check for when the title says that the submissions are open if you will. -

WW2 BAD-T 2 - BDA AI Dogfight Tournament [SEMIFINALS]
tetryds replied to tetryds's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
At this point I am not sure if adding resistance is that much better, the black dragon is fully armor plated and still cannot take more than two direct shots of a 20mm, but it can tank several .50cal shots. We are thinking about ways to improve how damage is handled, there are limits on how far this can go, but at least making wings not pop off from a few shots would be good. The current "damage is heat" model always sounded like a placeholder, so I guess it's time to get something better. -

WW2 BAD-T 2 - BDA AI Dogfight Tournament [SEMIFINALS]
tetryds replied to tetryds's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Marvin, that is very true, the Bad Company was indeed good, its only major problem was the roll rate. Hornet easily stalled itself when performing evasion maneuvers, and because it's big it shouldn't be hard to hit, but the bad company only lacked the roll rate to be able to aim and engage when that happened. It's a good design, maybe changing control surfaces deflections can already fix that, or minor changes. -
WW2 BAD-T 2 - BDA AI Dogfight Tournament [SEMIFINALS]

So, about the tiering of the next tournament, I had a few ideas: Idea 1- There is a normal dummy that classifies for Tier 2, that will be public, and a better dummy that classifies for Tier 1, but no one knows what it is until submissions close, then I run 1x1 battles against it to classify for T1 based on your performance against it, not necessarily a win. Idea 2 - Trusting that no one would cheat just to win on the Tier 2, there are two public dummies and you choose which tier to fight at, without rematches. Idea 3 - Players who went to Tier 2 stay there but the two finalists which get "promoted", the two worst performing on T1 round 2 go to T2, this can be a bit unfair and only fun if battles happen all the time, as this is a player based rather than craft based approach. Idea 4 - Two public dummies, player chooses if T1 or T2, losers of T1 round 1 go to T2 too. Idea 5 - Two average dummies, tiering works like it does right now. Since the current method is working so well I think I would go for Idea 5, personally. -

@Bob_Saget54 I don't remember if you won, and I wouldn't tell if you did, but sometimes the results can be unexpected, never assume anything beforehand... Actually, after seeing all these matches, who would you bet on? -

@BahamutoD that should be both the integral and the proportional references instead, the derivatives are the turning rates, but not only that, unless you control the turn rate you need a double integral to zero the error. Also if you increase the gains like that you will cause the oscilations, they are caused by the controller not by the airplane. Let's catch up on the IRC sometime and we can improve this control stuff @Van Disaster yes, I am aware of the risk of burning out, that is why I tend to run several battles at once. Help is great and always welcome, but I cannot count on it, so I have to set it up in a way that I can focus on the mainstream battles and get help with the others, which I would drop if no one else runs them, that is why I will consult everyone who is helping before anything is decided. If someone wants to help please let me know, be it running battles or testing the dummy or anything. -
WW2 BAD-T 2 - BDA AI Dogfight Tournament [SEMIFINALS]
tetryds replied to tetryds's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
As I said before, all round 1 battles were already run and the last two are awaiting to be edited and posted Then, the Tier 2 will be able to go by itself, it will have as many battles as the Tier 1 round 2+, which is great. I am thinking about ways to improve our tiering system, maybe two dummies that classify the tier or some pre-match. I could also judge them myself but if I made a mistake it would be unfair. The way it works now is good, I just don't want battles where one airplane gets plainly executed anymore, it should be fun for everybody (I also hope no one gets upset for losing a battle, it happens). Being able to fight at least twice is also a good thing that I would want to maintain, so Tier 2 would have both T2 crafts and T1 round 1 losers, which would allow it to have more battles. In fact, on the future I expect more publicity on this, and given that most people don't even know how to use FAR (sorry for the missing tutorials), we could end up having a T2 as big as or bigger than the T1. On this second version the crafts are much better than on the first BAD-T though. So, lets enjoy the current set of battles and see what works out on the future, some ideas worked really well, like the dummy, others need polishing, like the tiering, and then we may have this as an ongoing event in here for as long as it continues to be fun. -

The UpperProp surprised me, I did put some work on it but I would never expect it to be able to win. Also, with 2x 30mm it's the most heavily armored airplane on the tournament. Maybe it gets to round 3, that would be cool. Imagine if it wins the tournament, lewl. -

@LtColTeddyBear, your airplane broke the rules, exceeding the amount of points, which would be fine, because I simply removed weapons from it. The problem is that no matter how hard I try, it fails to take off, these two factors force me to disqualify your airplane. CompetitionCraft5-2 will be fighting the dummy on his match instead, the dummy will be used to fulfill the gap wins the match. Soon I will have run all the battles for round 1, then I will edit and release them with time No, I won't tell you if you won just yet. -

@Pds314 That was the problem, you can't do both if you want to do one of them well, your design would work much better as a turnfighter because it's so light. -
These are awesome, BAD-T battles look so much better with them

It's not mine, it's Bot Richard's I may not be able to run a battle today because I have a test tomorrow, but I will on the weekend. There is also that I am getting used to the flow of running them, so before I would take a lot of time checking and re-checking everything so that nothing wrong happens, now I already know what to check or not and that saves me a lot of time. -

WW2 BAD-T 2 - BDA AI Dogfight Tournament [SEMIFINALS]
tetryds replied to tetryds's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
There are differences, but I would rather if @ferram4 explained them. Despite seeming small, they are not trivial, but you are right, weight and static thrust are very important. @MarvinCZ not really, every engine is useful, you only need to find the best one for your airplane. So maybe it was the best choice, maybe it wasn't, but was not too bad, or maybe the enemy has a big problem or is just not that good, hard to know, that's why I run the battles and on a best out of three manner -

The wobble is causes by the noise generared by the quantization of the mearusements on the simulation, which adds noise to the response of the system and decreases the phase margin. Basically, you are limited on your gain and damping parameters when dealing with digital data, if you increase the deflection your max gain and damping values decrease. This is a very complex problem, there are many papers on it and I don't expect it to be solved on BDArmory, it's simply too far out of the scope of the mod. I am attempting a few solutions on MAF, it's very hard to get it to wobble already but I want to eliminate it for good. Then I man give Baha directions on how to minimize it. What you can do now is simply add more natural damping to the system and balance the elevator deflection , so, bigger tailplanes. As a penalty you lose a bit of turning hability, but you gain on energy conservation. Usually, simply decreasing the deflection already helps, but bigger tailplanes allow for more deflection. Tightly balancing aero works very well, you can tweak it so that your curves remain about constant, and remembering that these airplanes rarely go past mach 0.6, if ever. Maelstorm, from the first BAD-T, was tweaked like that, unfortunately it died on the final because of the AI Now to the feedback: The Yellow Moth is a good airplane, in this case it simply lost because it was an inferior design, not because there were a major flaw that killed its performance like on a few other airplanes, it was just suboptimal design choices. A few changes that would improve its behavior would be a lighter engine, which would also move the CoM back, a standard tailplane instead of all-moving (which shouldn't be allowed, but np), slightly longer wings and maybe a longer fuselage. The major problem of the design was the engine, it's simply too heavy for such a light craft, and being light it should be focused on turnfighting, so a two-stage supercharger would work better (D-series engines). To put it simple, it's a turnfighter with a B&Zner engine, that is like putting the engine of a race car on a monster truck. You sould try changing that and rebalancing the airplane, with less weight you gain lift, CoM back, you gain maneuverability with less stress, also gain climb rate and top speed, the design has potential. Also try to focus on the lowest possible weight, at a point your wings are so light that making them heavier won't make them survive for longer, so go for the lowest possible that can handle the aero stresses. -
