I've had a Quest Zenith two stage model rocket sitting in my basement for the past three years. I have yet to launch it. Problem: I don't have any first stage motors (the ones with zero delay before firing the ejection charge.) Solution: Make a home made reaction wheel. Question: How can I calculate how fast I need to spin the wheel given a certain mass. What I'm looking for is an equation to calculate it given speed, mass, and diameter. I know I could go out and buy a 1st stage motor, but that is much less of a challenge.

I'm not sure if this would work, but what about a 2L Coke bottle. According to what I found on the internet (real reliable, I know) a 2L soda bottle can survive 11.6atm of pressure. What I think you may be able to do is to place a few trimmings of fresh cut grass (since the individual cells are still living) and use them to recycle some of the CO2 in it (although CO2 won't be that large if an issue.) Next, wrap it with a few heater elements. These can be as simple as a 9v battery and some resistors. As far as any radiation, wrap a few bags of water around it. I know water is dense enough to block some radiation (although you may want to wrap the heating element in some tubing to prevent any stray wires from puncturing the bags.) If you want, maybe find a way to "mist" the insects using water from the bags. To help with the impact, I'd try dirt in the bottom of the bottle. I've heard dirt is some what compressible. So the dirt in the bottle, the water, and the structure of the payload should be enough to ensure survival. Then its just your usual tracker, radio, and any other sensors you decide to send up. I'm just stating ideas that come to my head right now.

Can someone help me here? For some reason, the wireless router in my house will occasionally drop its internet connection. My computer will remain connected to the router, but the router won't connect to the internet. The only way to get it to reconnect is to physically unplug and restart the router. For some reason, it always seems to do this at night. Making matters worse is the fact that I'm kind of a night owl, the rest of my family isn't, and the floors in my house are very squeaky. Reconnecting to the router does not make the router connect to the internet. Any one know whats going on and how I can get it to stop happening?

Why no fuel in wings?
rpayne88 replied to Deadweasel's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I think you need "Resource" above the first bracket. I've never modded anything, though. -
I'm not a computer expert, but if its not entering BIOS, it sounds like a firmware issue. Firmware is software that tells the computer where to find its boot software. I don't know how to fix it, though.

For Roleplayers: How do you dispose of the LV-N engines?

Not so much land as crash them into the Mun. -
Why?...I can understand reactors, but bombs? Lets just say one is a controlled reaction, the other isn't (and that is my whole understanding of nuclear physics.)

Saturn V stage recovery... there wasn't any?
rpayne88 replied to Motokid600's topic in Science & Spaceflight
On of the design proposals for the Shuttle involved launching the orbiter and external tank on an S-1C. The S1-C would then fly back and land. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturn-Shuttle -
So basically Mars One? A one way manned trip?

? 2 Cannon balls are dropped at the same time...

In pure mechanical (I guess that is the right word) physics, ALWAYS ignore factors such as air resistance. That falls under aerodynamics, not physics. -
Just found out Titanfall will require Origin =(
rpayne88 replied to Kilmeister's topic in The Lounge
I've been playing BF3 on Origin. It was lagging so much I opened task manager and found it was using half the amount of memory that BF3 was using. And the process kept restarting itself. Yeah, I feel your pain. -
How is Energy generated on a Spacecraft?

Google translate. That should help you out a bit. -
My 10th grade English teacher. Her class is the only class I have ever failed. Why did I fail, you may ask? She would not give me the work I missed. You see, in 10th grade, I had been diagnosed with Celiac Disease for all of about 5 months. With Celiac, consumption of foods containing gluten, such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats, causes food poisoning like symptoms. And there is a lot of "hidden" gluten in most foods. Long story short, I missed a few days. Despite a doctor's note stating I had Celiac and a note from my parents, she refused to give me any work (initially at least.) She claimed that she had lectured the class and had not assigned of collected any thing. Fast forward two weeks, and the class gets progress reports. I looked down at my paper and saw missing assignments making up the majority of the page. These assignments were given the days I were absent. I then talked to her again, and she straight up accused me of trying to blame my poor grades on her. I then take the issue up with my parents. Unfortunately, my mom is a teacher in the same school district, but not the same school. My mom has had more than one parent blame her for their child's poor grades. It is usually a case of the child not doing his homework. As a result, my mom then followed my teacher's lead and accused me of trying to "pass the buck" onto my teacher. As a result, I failed the class with a 53%. It figures that I went to summer school and passed the class with the second highest grade, 105% (we had an extra credit assignment, and I did it.) So, my English teacher was nothing short of an a--hole. I wish that students had the capability to fire their teachers for s--- like this.

I thought this was against their EULA. I actually still have a few codes I plan on giving to a friend now.

You sound exactly like me in High school (except that I don't have ADD.) May I suggest community college? They are much cheaper and allow you to get your gen ed. course work out of the way for a fraction of the price. If you can build up a high GPA on your college transcript there, you should be able to transfer to a four year school to complete your degree without problem. Community college is no longer seen as a "cop out" to universities. Where I'm going to school, the Community College of Baltimore County, because I'm in the honors program there, I've got guaranteed admission to several Maryland schools once I graduate. Community college will let you build your GPA back up, get you credits, save your money, may qualify you for scholarships, and makes it easy to work part time. Never mind the fact that you are almost guaranteed admission to a community college. Another advantage is that it will make the transition process to college easier. Your classes will be smaller than most university classes. My high school GPA was 2.8 unweighted, 3.2 weighted. Now that I'm in college, my GPA is 3.3 unweighted. Trust me, it will help you out.

If you ever see blood coming out of your body, it is not a good sign. Like the others said, go to the hospital. This can range from a parasitic infection to ulcers to worse.

I don't want to put anyone in Russia down, but like most people, I think they screwed this one up. They have known about the 2014 games being in Sochi for at least four years now. You mean to tell me they couldn't even get basic infrastructure (such as clean water) in that time? They are still rushing to build hotels that should have opened no later than last Summer. Then there is their problem with strays. IMO, it seems a little brutal to send people out to shoot dogs (although I understand why they are doing it.) They couldn't have tried to catch and humanly euthanize them? Or maybe spay/ neuter, vaccinated and release them? I'm sure there are a lot of people around the world that would have donated money to sponsor that effort. Then there is the terrorism issue. The games are meant to be peaceful, yet the U.S. has a pair of warships in the Black Sea to extract U.S. athletes in the event of an attack. I honestly do not believe the RU's statement that they will be able to ensure security for the games. I honestly do not think they are ready to host the games. Once again, this is not meant to be an attack on their inability to finish preparing, just a restatement of the facts.

What about landing it on a reinforced, oil rig- like structure? They could then load it onto a modified freighter and service the stage as it sails back to KSC. I'm not a boat guy, but that stage should be back at KSC within twelve hours (assuming a 23kt speed.) If Space X is planing to make them rapidly reusable, this will kill two birds with one stone. Maybe they could bypass the rig altogether if they could either find a way to stabilize a ship or make the rocket respond to the ship's pitch and roll.

I've been in the cockpit of a C-130 once. They have HUDs there too. I've also had the chance to witness a flight of four A-10s break formation for landing about 1000ft above me once while I was landing at Martin State (KMTN,) AKA Warfield Air National Guard Base.

I don't think C-17's can carry an Abrams (unless you're not talking about the M1A1 tank.) I know the C-5 can only carry one of them at a time, and the C-5 is MUCH larger than a C-17.

Mars One - Anyone signed up for one-way ticket to Mars?
rpayne88 replied to stijnovic's topic in The Lounge
There was a whole thread on Mars one a while ago. IIRC, it got locked after it digressed from its topic. Mars one would need the infrastructure of a small nation, and the people to run it, to succeed. I don't see that happening anytime soon without billions, if not trillions, of dollars invested in it first. -
Ranting about "Kerbalnaughts" and the K syndrome.
rpayne88 replied to astropapi1's topic in KSP1 Discussion
If you are talking about Kessliar (sp?) Syndrome, it is actually called that IRL. -
IIRC, it means its an automated system with no human double checking the weather. So far, 1.7 hours down. Last five leasons were canceled for the following reasons (in order): Weather Injury Work Weather Weather If it wasn't for the winds here, today would have been a good day to fly.
