  1. Here are a couple of websites with at least some of the information you'll need: Winchell Chung's Atomic Rockets website Robert Braeunig's Rocket and Space Technology website Both of them contain lots of useful information. Atomic Rockets is more intended to convey the basics across to laymen, while Braeunig's site is for those who are really interested in digging in to all the details. Neither one requires much math (for the final equations) beyond what you might learn in high school. Figuring out how to do specific things in the game is just a manner of knowing the general principles and applying them to your specific situation.
  2. Welcome to the forums! Glad to hear that you're enjoying the game, and I know exactly where you're coming from. I've spent many a late night trying to get that One Last Mission done myself... and then sending another mission to support it... and then launching a third after telling myself "Wouldn't it be cool to try this?"... and then the sun rises in the real world, and I realize I'm going to be a wreck for the rest of the day I'd definitely encourage you to learn as much as you can on your own, but if you ever get well and truly stuck on something, you can take a look at the Drawing Board (link in my sig), which has a number of useful tutorials and other player aids. The people in the How To section of the forums will also be more than willing to answer any questions you may have. Also, feel free to share your latest exploits in Mission Reports, or to share screenshots of your latest rovers, landers, and other craft over in the Spacecraft Exchange. Happy landings!
  3. Welcome to the forums! Glad to see you've already done so much even though you've only had it a week! Getting out to Minmus is good practice for later interplanetary missions -- especially going back and forth between the Mun and Minmus is a great way to practice for transfers between planets without using up much fuel. If you ever find yourself at a particularly frustrating point and need help, I'd highly advise checking out the Drawing Board (link in my sig), which has a number of useful tutorials and player aids. Don't be afraid to ask questions in the How To section of the forums as well. Happy landings!
  4. You can also use Left Control to throttle down, in the off-chance you need to do that.
  5. I think I'm in love. OK, I'll be honest; I only want you for the lab But yeah, sleep deprivation = bad news. Pulling all-nighters right before exams in college always left me feeling like an absolute mess, but for some reason I never learned come next semester... Somehow, though, I never actually did badly on the exams themselves.
  6. I vaguely remember someone talking about a site where players could share persistent files for downloading, but I don't remember anything other than a few broad strokes. I think your best bet would be asking around and seeing who would be interested in participating in such a thing, then work out the file-sharing details amongst yourselves.
  7. Welcome to the forums! There are tons of tutorials in the Drawing Board (link in my sig) that might help you out quite a bit. If you still have questions, feel free to ask, but we'll need details about what exactly the problem is.
  8. I remember reading the Muse article about that guy when I was younger. Which must give y'all a clue as to how old I am, since that issue was many years ago.
  9. Alrighty. Grabbing the persistent file now. EDIT: Is the Aircraft Fueler supposed to be right next to the Sun? I have a sneaking suspicion that it isn't...
  10. This chair is an eyesore. My hovercraft is full of eels. LIECHTENSTEIN!!
  11. I'm still not convinced that you really need more than just a knife and a plan. Even if the plan is just something like "Use the knife to get something better than a knife." In that case, it loses because it's being piloted by Jebediah Kerman, and the first thing he'll do is FIRE ALL THE SRBs in every direction without even bothering with things like "targeting."
  12. When you stop using cruise control on your car because you feel it cheapens the experience of real driving.
  13. Nicely done! Onwards to other planets!
  14. Looks interesting. Looks like it was inspired by Warning Forever / Battleships Forever, both of which I used to play a bit.
  15. I call this the ZugZug: Sometimes it breakdances. Putting rovers on low-gravity moons is the funnest thing ever.
  16. Speaking of Minmus, I've got a concept for a rover of my own (significantly lighter than Red Dwarf's, though). I'll play around with that idea in my own save tonight, just to see if it works.
  17. Welcome to the forums! If you ever need help accomplishing a specific goal or just want to learn more about the game, I'd highly recommend looking at the Drawing Board (link in my sig), which has a number of handy player tutorials and references. You can also ask questions in the How To section of the forums as well. Happy landings!
  18. I'm guessing there's a subtle difference between the red *CLASSIFIED* for the Bop probes and the blue *CLASSIFIED* for the Valhalla Anchorage. Specifically, the use of red elsewhere is not an encouraging sign. Also, are all of these based on missions you've actually flown in-game? Just idly curious. EDIT: While I'm thinking about it, do you think you could make the mission icons available for download? I'm half-tempted to make one of these charts for my own space program, and I've already got the template for the chart itself. EDIT2: The complete lack of missions to Tylo is also intriguing.
  19. Welcome to the forums! If you ever get stuck somewhere, or if you just want to learn the finer points of building and flying rockets, I'd highly advise taking a look at the Drawing Board (link in my sig). There are a number of guides, tutorials, and other useful references in there, many of which are written specifically for new players. Don't be afraid to ask questions in the How To section of the forums either, as the people who frequently post there tend to be quite knowledgeable and experienced. Happy landings!
  20. Welcome to the forums! I'd like to second Vanamonde's recommendation there; that tutorial should tell you everything you need to know about getting into orbit. Feel free to check out some of the others in the Drawing Board (link in my sig) or to ask questions in the How To forums if you're still having problems. Just remember -- once you're in orbit, you're already halfway to anywhere. Happy landings!
  21. Welcome to the forums! As joppiesaurus has alluded to, there's a vetting system on the boards designed to filter out trolls, spammers, bots, and other assorted malcontents. Until you've made a certain small number of posts, a lot of forum privileges are deactivated, such as the ability to upload avatars and link to images. You seem like a decent enough sort from your introduction, though, so it shouldn't take you too long to get your account ship-shape. Since you've been playing the game a while, feel free to share your words of wisdom with newer players in the How To section of the forums. You can also post tales of your exploits over in the Mission Reports section. Above all, feel free to jump into any conversation that interests you. Happy landings!
  22. Back in 0.19, I've still got a set of kerbalnauts stuck in orbit around Moho. I sent a tanker out to them, and they still didn't have quite enough fuel to get home. They might have enough fuel to get to Eve, though, where it would be much easier to send a tanker. I'll have to try that.
  23. If I recall correctly, control automatically defaults to the craft with more mass.
  24. Fun fact: Both explosives and fertilizer tend to have high nitrate content. In fact, in some places, I think they have to do background checks if you try to buy too much fertilizer at one time.
  25. Strictly speaking, you don't really need to consider that second set of 860 m/s dv fully, since it's much cheaper to return from the Mun than it is to get there (and the atmosphere will kill most of your excess velocity on your reentry approach). That said, 7400 m/s dv is probably right there on the razor edge. As others have pointed out, the numbers on the delta-v charts assume ideal conditions and perfect piloting, which aren't always the case even with MechJeb helping you.
