So I finally caved and signed up for the game. ...Now how do I configure the launcher to only download files when I want it to? As soon as I finished installing, it started d/ling this 5 GB update, and I don't think I even have 5 Gigs left on my monthly allowance I'd be fine if I could set it up to only download during my nightly unlimited access period...

Nicely done, especially the Tylo lander!

Where to start with a rover?
Specialist290 replied to Diggydug's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
The others seem to have covered the rovers themselves well, so I'll chip in with this discussion about landers for them. Do note that many users have had quite a few problems with getting the "Munokhod" idea to work properly using only stock parts. -
I quite like the writing style you're using. It reminds me of that used by a set of old collectable "Fact File" foldout pamphlets I used to have when I was much younger. I don't remember what happened to them, unfortunately... Keep up the good work!

Flags? Seats? Changing pods is the real .20 star

Actually, I just noticed another little change that I like: The ability to see the delta-v change for all your planned maneuvers on the map. Very handy. -
Welcome to the forums! On the subject of tutorials, I've got a small collection of them listed on the Drawing Board (link in my sig) to help players quickly and easily find the information they're looking for. It doesn't cover everything just yet, but we're getting there. And don't feel bad about finding the game hard to master. It takes a lot of practice to get good at even the basic skills, but fortunately, once you learn those basics, it gets easier and easier to put them together to achieve tougher and more ambitious goals. If you stick with the game, you'll find entire worlds' worth of new and interesting experiences, both literally and metaphorically. Happy landings!

Welcome to the forums! The forums are handled by a different system than the Steam and KSP Stores; thus, it doesn't matter where you purchased the game, as your forum account is unrelated to either of those. Since you're a new player, I'd highly recommend that you check out some of the tutorials found on the Drawing Board (link in my sig) if you run into any difficulties. A lot of the instructions might not make sense until you've given the missions a few tries, but it's very rewarding if you keep at it. Don't be afraid to post questions about building and flying your vehicles in the How To forums as well. Happy landings!

Huh. Well, that makes matters easier...
-
Nice! I'll probably eventually buy it, then, either when that happens or when I get a faster Internet connection.

A little belated, but: http://youtu.be/MAfcnS4VfDQ

Quoted for truth.

Mostly older rock, mostly '60s, mostly British. Other than that, if I really like a song, it goes into my collection, regardless of genre.

Here's another shocker for you: The first American attempt to launch a satellite exploded on the launchpad. One of the nicknames given to the probe (which was thrown clear of the rocket by the explosion and survived) by the newspapers was... Stayputnik. Mind-blowing, isn't it?
-
I know that feeling. I love flight sims, but unfortunately this one is multiplayer-only, and I'm on a satellite connection with latency that could give a drunk sloth on a public holiday a run for its money. That said, if I could, I'd totally download this game just to see if I could snipe a jet fighter out of the sky with a ground attack plane.

Please help. Fuel lines.
Specialist290 replied to bigpapabearxx's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
This. As long as the crew survives, there are no failures -- only dry runs for successful rescue missions. -
If I ever actually get up the effort to play this game, I must try this with the Shturmovik.

How to do a proper burn?
Specialist290 replied to Stealth2668's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
From personal experience: If you're within ~5% of your target delta-v change for the node, you'll be just fine. You don't have to actually change your heading as the target moves; just kill your throttle before the delta-v meter starts going up again. The maneuver node system assumes an instantaneous change in velocity, so your actual burn is almost never going to be a perfect match to the plotted course (unless you use an autopilot to help). It used to trip me up quite a bit, too, since I have a slight OCD tendency towards getting things exactly right. -
Adding another vote for that suggestion. Partless integration would be very awesome indeed.

I have found it!! - THE ORIGINAL KERBO LOG!
Specialist290 replied to Moach's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Holy thread necro, Batman! Who knows what obscure media references lurk in the hearts of Internet users? The Shadow knows. While this thread has the attention, though: Can anyone on the dev team tell us the origins of Jebediah, Bill, and Bob Kerman specifically? Was Jebediah always intended to be a "BadS," or was that notion more of an idea that caught on among the fans until it was officially implemented? -
Onwards and Upwards. To Infinity and Beyond
Specialist290 replied to BrainDeZa's topic in Welcome Aboard
Welcome to the forums! And I have to second that warning. It was enough of a system shock for me after the 0.20 update to lose Kerbal Engineer Redux, which has the data displays but not the autopilot, even though it ended up being just a temporary loss. Anyway, if you want to learn how to get more out of your rocket designs than you are already or need advice on getting yourself on a sticky situation, the Drawing Board (link in my sig) has a fairly comprehensive list of tutorials and reference guides available. You can also ask questions in the How To section of the forums, and the more knowledgeable players there will more than likely be able to address your concerns. Happy landings! -
Help with this Rocket Collapsing.
Specialist290 replied to Rockhem's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Another possibility is to mount the engines radially to the main fuel tank with the fat I-beam, then connecting the lifter directly to the tank itself. No fairings to worry about at all. You'll probably also need to add fuel lines between the tank and the engines to make sure they're actually getting fuel, of course. -
If that's the case, then there's the Rocket Equation, which is explained here quite well in layman's terms. This other page on the same site explains how to apply it to multistage rockets. Note that you need roughly 4500 m/s of delta-v to reach stable orbit from Kerbin's surface, assuming ideal piloting.
