  1. Some photos from Duna operations - part of my BMX initiative. Bicycles Motorised for eXploration. They're fast, they're light, they're pretty decent range for what they cost. And boy are they good for publicity. Going downhill is dangerous. Gotta keep your hand on those reaction wheels to limit flipping. Turns aren't that hard, but it is best at charging in a straight line. When not in use, the bike can be hooked up to a ship or base for safe keeping, though they're alright on their own. Experiments to create an aquatic version have been .... interesting. It's not exactly buoyant. Could be a cool way to explore under an ocean. But for now, I'll stick to the dunes.
  2. I became the "coolest program director ever" when I told my kerbals they would soon be using dirt bikes on Duna. Naturally, we developed the technology on Kerbin First. Sorta broke the universe a few times during testing. You know how it is . Tested for cool jumps, turns take practice. The heavy duty version has roll bars, so it's definitely pretty safe. As with most things in KSP, it's a bit dangerous sometimes. Make sure you always wear your helmet.
  3. Today I decided to re do a cool idea from years ago. But this time, jet engines - the kerbin turbine broom! Wanted to give it bristles like the original Bit antennae just aren't as tough these days . Can almost turn on a dime - definitely turns on the slightly larger Australian 50 cent piece. It's not the fastest, nor the most long range, but made the kerbinside obstacle course ok. There is one design flaw. Logs from test pilots frequently include complaints about how it is not "designed to land" You just can't please some kerbals.
  4. TBH, the tech tree always seemed dumb to me. Becomes too much of a goal in itself, when the goal should just be to build a prosperous, productive space program. Science points also, should be something you can research for a long time at bases and long term missions, not just short fetch quests.
  5. While towing a buoy for a standard, scheduled bathymetric survey- (definitely not just mucking about after a failed attempt to use an SRB to drag the Ocean Explorer up a slope, because the ksp wheels are so bad....) I decided to invent kerbal water skiing. It was somewhat successful . Helmet wearing recommended.
  6. A good old Mun stranding- uh, I mean, landing. They have definitely landed.
  7. I still can't read the original on my own without echos of this in my head...
  8. Oh hey this thread. I made a hat. Took it to Eve, and insisted it wore it. "It's for Christmas, Eve" Manned, and capable of attitude adjustments. But not travel under its own steam, most of those tanks are empty. Inside, it's more like a christmas tree than a hat. Merry Christmas! (I also launched a Cathedral to hold Christmas services in) Not quite on topic, but they may as well be shared here: A bunch of Christmas, and Christmas inspired kerbal songs I wrote in the past: Six White Boosters Aussie Kerbal Jingle Bells T'was the night before 0.22
  9. Put some christmas decorations up Midnight service is in the Space Cathedral this evening, (That's midnight KSC time). P.S. If you want some kerbal Christmas cheer, here are two songs I kerbalised ages ago, Six White Boosters, Aussie Kerbal Jingle Bells, and a thread of Kerbal decorations http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/54985-jebmaschristmas-treeother-holiday-decorations-megathread/
  10. No Redundancy like over redundancy. It's a good basic design. I've done one on Minmus in the past, and your wheel set up might be more effective there, I recall the big wheels just slipping all over the place. Back then, I used a giant RTG mod for extra power, which necessitated protective screens. The Cradle? That bit up the top? There, I've got a sort of operations platform which kerbals can walk about on to change hooks, and a KIS container full of spares, and different types. Magnet is pretty much always the best type though. Also got a seat for driving it up there. If I use it again at some point, I'm thinking of adding ladders which extend under the hooks, so I can use the winch to get kerbals back up there after they fall.
  11. Recovery effort continued. Successful technology demonstration! We have shown ourselves capable of recovering vehicles from pools. A great milestone for any space program. I plowed the fields. And uh, re-purposed the crane as a toll both. It is definitely not stuck. This was definitely what I intended to do. And some.. experiments In novel ways to travel through space.
  12. Please don't quote an entire long post for a reply. Edit the quote down to the important part, it's better when everyone on the forum doesn't have to scroll through the same thing twice when they don't need to.
  13. It used to be standard on my rovers - 0 used to toggle between driving mode and fine movment mode. Especially useful when the rover has more complex wheels.
  14. Some of your cliffs their seem a bit much, and there are some points which could to with rounding off, but otherwise, it looks like you've captured the blobby wavy smooth forms that define Minmus. Definitely looks like something you'd find on Minmus,
  15. So... it's been some time... but I might pick this up again. Looks like Bill wants to destroy that portal. BTW, if I can find a way to make wheels useful again, I kinda feel like rebuilding everything for my old Oceans of Eve story. Would anyone be interested in that if I did?
  16. I have every version of KSP I've played stored on a drive. I grabbed it from an old version, made a few changes to the CFG file - like changing "module = commandPod" to "module = Part" so it would load, and copying some thermal properties from another pod, then stuck its folder it in my gamedata folder. The back node's the wrong way around, but it mostly works, and I need its sharp angles for my old rover. P.S, when quoting larger posts, it's possible to edit the quote so it only the part you need is showing. This makes it easier for people reading the thread.
  17. I like the goofy kerbals. Like the junk like look of many of the parts, it's fun to succeed despite appearances. They're quite recognisable too. Maybe, show people the spacecraft, or the orbital view first?
  18. Logdate: 0,1,5:3. HA HAHA Ha ha ha. For the record, the KSC pool is a terrible way to wash a rover. There's just no way it can get out under its own steam. I tried rescuing it with a tow truck. No avail. The tow truck ended up in the water too. Time to bring out some major muscle, and revive another old design: The Mighty Mega Load Lifter Modern edition. This was after modifying the strength of the KAS magnets. I used to use a rig like this to move bases about on the Mun. It should be able to lift one medium size rover. Woops. I feel like this recovery effort just became a lot more expensive... Also:
  19. Today was dig up your old favourite rovers day. (And then wash it off like so) And I continued to be frustrated by current KSP's wheels. Damn it, how can I get anywhere, if I can't take the slightest slope? This was built to traverse hill country. Also, Did some aerodynamic experiments. Managed to get a weird effect, caused it to flip super rapidly, which led to a very slow descent. I'm sure something could be made of this phenomena, if Dany hasn't managed already.
  20. IDK if it's still out there. I've still got a copy, and a sorta working version of the old MK3. This has me tempted to see if I can find a way to re-work that old texture. Which may turn out to be a mixed blessing - his modeling is very good, but most of the parts I saw just didn't have the same variety, and clear identities that each of the current engines have. I like the variety- the range of appearances in the parts gives us more possibilities when it comes to making imaginative vessels.
  21. Need I say more? It was useful to be able to quickly switch a rover from a faster, stabler mode to one which enabled precision parking.
  22. Just as long as they keep key aspects and features of each, (and the landscapes fairly recognisable) they could all do with a touch up.
