The "no-engined" flyer challenge!
Tw1 replied to Themohawkninja's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
While not quite what you're looking for, I made this a while ago. It flew on and on and on.. once it gets going. -
I remember that from school! I never got the rocket launching bit to work. I have a book of the same name on my shelf.
-
There is also a green button in IVA that lets you do it, near the speed indicator. It's very cool.
-
Yes, but only if you're already in orbit, and only for the current alignment of planets.
-
Here's one of me, bit small, this was when I visited the worlds largest scale model of the solar system.
-
I hope it's mainly for plotting orbits, and seeing future alignments of the planets. I wouldn't like set missions, but a general list of things you could do. That way, you get to use your imagination, rather than following a task list.
-
I've had them over 5km. I experimented with save editing things to create huge towers, but it didn't work to well. They glitched, and I couldn't control it, or leave to space center. The plan was to have a launchpad (extraplanetary launchpad mod) at the top, hab pods at both the top and bottom, so I could use crewmanifest to send kerbals to the top. It didn't work out. I later re-used the extended cables to make a big slingshot.

Muhn, or like "Moon" but with a much shorter "oo".
-
Prepared for Curiosity replication.
-
Well, I couldn't resist. Many squashed rovers later, "Inquisitivity" is now sitting in my VAB, and I dare not touch it incase the fairings come off again. I'll probably do the mission in a day or two. I will need to use MJ's translatatron, there's no way I could operate this skycrane entirely manually. Why? Here's a little teaser: That was Bill hooking up the KAS for the final test flight! Edit: Realised my parachute is set too far down the staging sequence, and I just closed the game. I'll fix that at launch next time. If someone could get me the coordinates for the target (The underground rover camera) That'd be great.
-
Agreed, that seems like it'd be a strange thing to do. Perhaps copying the part from an old install will fix the problem.

I remember driving over a cliff like that testing a Dres lander. Bad times. Actually, that looks like the cliff near the Neil Armstrong Memorial on the Old Mun.

You Will Not Go To Space Today - Post your fails here!

Ladders. A design challenge which I quite like. Yet a fatal flaw can easily come in here. Testing very important. There are no control systems? Apart from what looks like Nova's repurposable fuel tanks, but I can't remember if they were control or just habitation. -
I put a ring of kerbals around the pad to serve this purpose back in 0.20. They didn't add a lot more light, but I definitely saved on part count.
-
Look at this NASA page! They've taken your idea! (Kinda.) http://mars.nasa.gov/msl/1stbday/?go=20130803 Edit: Here's a quick skycrane test. Maybe I'll have enough time to give it a go. Now I just need to make a rover thats under two tones. Next time: Use the DROMOMAN arms to make a realistic Curiosity.... Made a Curiosity: But despite the CoM and CoT looking lined up, it only cartwheels under the skycrane. Problem.

I agree more or less with this theory...

The plugin made by someone from Germany, and a skybox made in New Zealand... Yay for the international internet! I like the new texture a lot. It makes the going to space thing feel a lot more like going to space. Something very interesting going on there. Interesting to see planets floating in atmosphere...
-
I'd say you'll find it somewhere on those dark patches, near the middle.
-
That's an interesting way to plan it. So far, I've just been doing a mix of seeing what's coming, and choosing the windows I want.

A big glitch that happened in April, where pretty much everything after August 2012 was lost, threads, blogs, profiles, the lot. Also known as the Great Forum Wipe, the Forum Kraken Attack, and the Big April Derp. My last flight to the pole was done with a mainsail plane (shuttle orbiter, really), with the infinite fuel cheat, so it's not exactly eligible...

Show off (Yeah, that's kinda the point of the thread, if not much of the forums, I know, I know. ) Once they get everything organised, my space program will use this pic for postcards that say "Wish you were here." Helps that all Kerbals (currently) look the same. Sold in the visitors center, ground floor of the astronaut complex, with the KSP logo added discretely in the bottom right corner. Exploration of the Mun continues. My space program has been more of an Eve lander testing program lately. Can't get the damn heat shield to fly straight. Decided to just build a bigger shield. Problem solved. (I hope they make better aerodynamics before stock reentry heat is in.)

I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a forum account. If he did, I imagine he'd cause an interesting stir every time he posted. Also, seeing as I'm posting, congrats on thread of the month!

So far, in including all versions: Many missions to Mun and Minmus, many satellites, A few kerbin stations, one Mun base, probes to all planets, rovers on all planets, (not all drivable after landing.)(Except not yet on Bop or Pol.) Interplanetary Kerbals: Landed on Duna. Delivered rescue package, drove to pole, returned via rescue system. Landed on Dres, explored, returned. Landed on Moho, explored. Spontaneous disassembly after achieving orbit. Rescue from Moho. (Which was very close.) One space station that went flying out of the solar system which wasn't completely evacuated... Made Rockets, Cannons, Shuttles, Space Stations, a few dodgy Planes, Rovers, Boats, Daleks, Starfighters, Space Opera Houses and heaps of odd things.... But there is still much more that can be done!
