    Besiege Game

    I'd been wondering if a thread like thin might show up. I've done a bit with it, the construction interface feels crude compared to what we have in KSP.
  2. I think we have a fairly good set of engines, but then I have no qualms about clustering them, and tend to avoid stack staging.
  3. Definietlly agree with everyone that the best way would be one unit of L.S. supports one kerbal for one day. But I still don't think having separate greenhouses and scrubbers makes sense. In my experience with life support mods, very good recyclers make it quite easy, and reduce the role ISRU has to play. Setting up an ISRU based life support supply system would be a great "natural"* goal that could emerge in the game. *by natural, I mean it emerges out of need, not because the game tells you to do it. One thing that must not be forgotten, 50% does not just double the time it takes. You'll recover 50% of the original supply, then 25% of what you recovered, then 12.5% of that.... Recyclers must be balanced carefully.

  8. Something like this would be a great way to implement tides on Kerbin and Laythe. With the resonance between the other moons, and the force of Jool, the laythe tides should be predicable enough to not need to b calculated dynamically. A much lazier way would be to just have the lava sphere rotate differently to the rest of thed planet. I hope they leave a gap so the moholes are still accessible.
  9. I don't think mercury in such volumes is a naturally occurring possibility. Eve seems like a cross between Venus and Titan, it strikes me as more likely to be a carbon rich planet. Plus, Eve is one of only three planets where oceanic exploration is possible, so it would be nice to not rule that out. I'd like to keep the Mun and Minmus fairly tame for new players. That said, I don't see why standard space dangers should not be present. Not sure about shacking near the kracken. It's dead. Maybe some interference to science equipment could happen. As long as whatever data remains mysterious, getting specific science reports from it could be cool. Duna needs some signs of past water activity you can hunt for. Sure, they are there if you use your imagination, but it is the Mars analogue. The sun stuff could be cool, but they'd need to implement persistent spinning first.
  10. Yes! *fist pump* It depends on if they use the current thrust as the max, or the minimum one. Sounds like it might be the former. Having played with KIDS for a while, this is a far kinder option.
  11. This is my thoughts too, (I'd like to see the terminate button changed to the stop tracking one for asteroids. ) Perhaps it could be made clear this is an option in the contract brief. Moving a satellite from its required orbit really should make the contract void, and incur a penalty, even though you've previously completed it.
  12. I think it can be further simplified. Living things need a certain amount of Food, water and air per day- these could all be rolled into one life support resource. Having scrubber units separate from pods does not seem logical, it will just add to the part count. Instead, consider them part of a pod. Air scrubbers, toilet, climate control and food prep systems, can all be abstracted by adding an electrical demand when a kerbal is inside. Using scrubbers as the life support recycling also seems odd. Instead, some larger unit would make more sense, and provide more balance- there should be a zone where it may or may not make more sense to just bring a little more Life support, rather than always dragging around the recycler. A life support recycling plant would be big, more suited to motherships, bases, etc. I seems to me the easiest way to implement "Recycling" would be as something that simply reduces the rate of use per kerbal. Otherwise, a waste resource is needed. Magic generation of new life support from nothing should be avoided, even with several recycler/greenhouses it should still be possible to run out of life support. The only way to permanently exist away from Kerbin should be ISRU. Happiness is an interesting concept, but it doesn't consider that there are introverted people who have traveled the world solo, spending months alone, yet being fine. A character in my Oceans of Eve story was sort of inspired by one of these. Some kerbals would be introverted enough to be satisfied with only remote communication. Personally, being stuck with another person who I didn't find completely awesome, doesn't sound like something that would add to my happiness. I think if some happiness mechanism was to be implemented, basing it around the available space in the ship would be better. Everyone likes to move around, and introverts like me need somewhere to get away to. I made this diagram for a previous debate, but it still provides a good overview of my thoughts on life support. Which, apart from the above mentioned details, doesn't seem too far off things being discussed in this thread. Also, I'd let suits have a few hours worth of life support, to allow for some orbital EVA shenanigans. Those can be fun. These plans have always struck me as wasteful and dumb. If you're going to spend months to get somewhere, the time spent there should be enough to make it worth it. This basic apollo style thinking is has been a problem in KSP's development. The science system is currently build around quick visits- get in, do the science, get out. But in KSP you can to things real life space programs don't have the resources to, like set up bases, and send larger, more elaborate missions. But there's only a few minutes worth of science to do. But this is getting off topic.
  13. Part four: To the Mun? A few more weeks later... The rocket had been assembled. Fuses painstakingly measured to make sure each section would light at the same time. The five kerbals lugged their creation to the park, and waited until the Mun was right overhead. Werner: "It is time!" Harvester: "Go Jeb!" (Looks like Bill finally got his way with the fins.) Jeb pulled himself into position, slipping his arms into the straps. He kicked the ladder, knocking it clear. Bill: "The fuse is almost at the ten second mark." Bob: "I really hope we got everything right. " Werner: "Let us count it down from ten." "10" "9" "8" "7" "6" "5" "4" "3" "2" "1" "0" *Boom* Werner: "It's working!" The rocket leapt upwards, rapidly burning through its first stage. It was soon visible to kerbals all over the city. Bill: "First stage almost gone!" Image by blackheart612 and Tw1 Werner: "Second stage, it is lit!" The faces of spectators below the flightpath turned from curiosity to terror, as the flaming debris began to drift down. Some ran to their phones, or fire extinguishers, while others ran about in panic. Those were his prize kamellias. Jeb continued upwards, shifting his weight to keep the dwindling rocket on course. He went higher, and higher, yet the Mun never seemed any closer. On the ground, the other four saw the rocket burn out. Jeb continued upwards for a while, then slowed, and began to fall. Bob: "Use the parachute! Where's the parachute?" Jeb let himself plummet, waiting 'till the last possible moment, then triggered the parachute just above the treetops. * * * Later... Gene: "Well? What did you think was going to happen?" Kerbal hands are really hard to draw. Gene: "I told you, cool as travel to the planets might be, it's just not possible. Didn't you read my note?" Werner: "I read your note. It was practically a whole essay. I still disagree with you though." Gene: "You'd need far too much fuel to stay up and keep moving." Werner: " Yet Jeb continued to go upwards for some time after the rocket expired. I'm not convinced it works that way. It must be possible. It must be. " * * * That night, each of our wannabee rocketeers had a visitor. Being young, they were all let of with a very a stern warning, and told what the consequences would be if they ever again tried launching oversize fireworks. They remained friends throughout their school years, and stayed in contact through college, despite going into different fields. Jeb took over his family's junkyard business. Werner and Bob studied science, and Bill engineering. Harvester went into the relatively new field of computer technology. To Be Continued. * * * * * Next time: "I quit!"
  14. It's magnificent. That kerbal looks satisfied, even in death. Kerbals! Atten-shun! (That's how we do it in KSP. With 21 mainsails, the engine of ceremonial purposes. )
  15. Welcome to the forums! Don't forget some of us have been playing kerbal for a very long time, and will find this far to simple as a challenge. For example, here is an Evas where I've left the ship. Done an orbit around the Mun, then returned to the ship. And the same during a real solar system mod apollo mission just for kicks. But don't be discouraged! Get to know the game, attempt some challenges yourself, and then you'll be ready to get involved in challenge creation. Oh, also best to read the rules in the challenge rules sticky thread.
  16. Yes. But, it's not too hard to copy the coordinates of the ship to move it to Minmus. But, if you only want to move a part slighly, I have some instructions here: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/entries/1517-A-very-quick-guide-moving-parts-by-Persistent-file-editing Parts can be swapped for other parts by changing the name in the persistence file. Note that the name in the file will be different from what's given in game. Check in a parts CFG to get its in persistence file name. Though unless it's a very small change and you know exactly what you want, hyperedit and replace is a far better option.
  17. Agreed. If there was to be a round two, I'd like to see them put Roche back around Eve. So they know what time of year it is?
  18. These, as well as those drawings in the other thread, are pretty awesome. Getting the point across with a few pixels can be quite tricky, but here you've done that well.
  19. This. Definitely. My main bugbear is that the science is so shallow, there's little to motivate surface exploration, not a lot of worth to stations, etc. Though I still hope Squad will continue to relase expansions as they go. Or some generous and dedicated modder makes something like my suggested revamp for science. That, and the fact that they've set up game mechanisms which are finite. Most of the games I've enjoyed the most have been ones where there's always something new, like Simcity- you can always find a better solution to your traffic problems, or balance for your taxes. Kerbal could have been made about growing and sustaining activities in space, but instead we got unlock the parts and buildings. If you're getting bored, try something completely different. Ignore 'how you're supposed to play it'. Or, take a break. It will still be there should you feel like coming back. IMHO, kerbal is most fun when you ignore any game like incentives, and do something crazy, or sit back and cruise over some planets. Though I'd prefer the opposite. The problem I see with most contracts is the player is following, not leading. I would have prefered a mechanism like in my blog linked which provides advantages for setting things up on your own, not ticking of someone else's boxes.
  20. I seem to have misread, my crazy thing already manages to fly in FAR. Just not that well. I'm leaving this entry here anyway, so have a go if you want, otherwise, I had fun building this anyway. Boatatron. When I tried it, I found it stalls at a pitch of 30 degrees. It will take off at about 50m/s, but it's better to let it get as much speed as possible before pulling up from the runway. A little unstable at low speeds. Very difficult to land, have not succeeded. Takes an awfully long time to gain height and speed, making it useless for anything other than showing off. Edit: Wait, 100 parts? I thought it said 200 hundred. Not reading well tonight. Oh well, I still have a cool boat now.
  21. I played around with a sky boat. ♫ Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing, over the sea to skye...♪ It stalled and crashed a lot. One time, it left an interesting wreck in the water: I wanted to go check it out, but my Laythe aquatic vehicle kept collapsing on load. So I made a new boat. However, turns out it was more of a U-boat, it had a tendency to travel downwards if you lowered the nose enough. I mucked around for a bit, made some observations, then went back to the sky boat. Still have yet to land it successfully. (BTW, that thing is flying with FAR.) That's a nice little base you've got going there. I like the bush like RTG assembly.
