Saw it in IMAX 3D.... Very awsome movie visually. I enjoyed it and tried to not let the Hollywood Science get to me too badly. Except for the Letting Clooney float away scene... <RANT> He had no more momentum, they were stopped. At that point it'd be harder to push him away than to continue holding him. And even if he was slightly moving, pulling on even an unfastened rope would move you slightly towards it's origin. WTF WAS PULLING HIM. SPACE WIND??? THROWS POPCORN!!!!!! </RANT> But I'd give it 7/10. Still a very good movie. (10/10 in IMAX 3D)

How many Kerbals do you have in need of rescuing?
Kilmeister replied to Fenris's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Since I started this current save since .22 I haven't had to perform a rescue mission yet. Jeb and Bill are happily roving around the Mun right now. But in my previous save I sent a manned mission to Mojo.... ...they ran out of fuel after obtaining a highly excentric orbit around Mojo. Had the fuel still in the lander so I did succesfully land, but there was no way it could make it back to Kerbin on it's own. So I had to send another mission to rescue them which included a nifty orbital collision, but left one ship still functional... linked up and transfered the fuel to the broken ship and I limped back to Kerbin, but had to leave Jeb in a high elliptical orbit around Kerbin in ship out of fuel. I got rest of the crew back home with the help of good ole' monopropellant. Finally I sent up a final rescue mission to go grab Jeb and bring him home in the middle of the desert because I failed at hitting an ocean. (I was almost out of fuel on this one too because I used my "Space Taxi" ship which was only designed to ferry crew to my station 250km in orbit, not 15000km.) so... Monopropellant FTW! -
This hurts codemonkey's brain. Using patch size as a metric? really? oww...

101+ Impossible/stupid requests
Kilmeister replied to Richy teh space man's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Ooh, this thread is still alive. This was a triumph. 651. Wheatley Space Program! -
I didn't know about it or I would've gotten up to see it along with the F1 race. I actually woke up at about the right time to see it, but I decided I'd just watch the DVR of the race later and went back to sleep. I would've had to drive to a clearing though, It would've been too low in the sky to see from where I live (Florida).

The greatest (engineering) achievement of mankind
Kilmeister replied to Camacha's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I'm going to go with Panama Canal too. Moving that much earth and building those massive locks 100 years ago is pretty damn impressive. The new locks are still impressive, but not so much now as we have modern excavation and construction methods. The only real major feat is that they are building the 2nd set of locks without disrupting full functionality of the existing waterway. Although my opinion may be slightly biased as I grew up in the Panama Canal Zone. -
Another KSP reference in this one. 2nd to last caption. It gave me a good laugh. http://what-if.xkcd.com/68/

That essay is an interesting read. It seems there is a little more to it than "burn prograde at munrise" =P

How can a photo be more pixels than bytes?
Kilmeister replied to Kerbface's topic in Science & Spaceflight
JPEG is not a lossless format. And yes, it's something like taking every pixel and grouping them, but it's a lot more complicated than that. Therefore the final size of the picture varies by the complexity of the picture. If you had a picture that had randomly generated pixels it's final file size would be quite large. On the other hand, a solid color JPEG will be very tiny. In a non-lossless format, such as a BMP, the final file size could be determined by the properties of the picture(color depth/resolution) regardless of it's contents. -
Mars Beyond Human Landing Achievement?
Kilmeister replied to NeoMorph's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I hadn't seen the Inspiration Mars project before, but their goals are a lot more realistic than the Mars One project. It's also a prerequisite for what Mars One is trying to accomplish. Just like Apollo 8, before you land, you should make sure you can actually get there with a manned crew. All the preparation in the world for landing and setting up a colony on Mars would be in vain if something unexpected comes up during the journey there. The unfortunate thing about this mission is that there is no monetary return for accomplishing it. And, sadly, despite the wealth of knowledge and experience this would provide, without an immediate monetary return, there's little chance of getting the funding needed for it. But I guess there is still room for some optimism, because by skipping the landing portion, the cost is significantly reduced. -
This seems even less feasible than a railgun type launcher. Not only would this have all the difficulties that a railgun would have to overcome, it also has to deal with sending a payload along a highly curved launch track. So even with the unobtanium track, payload would have to be very short(or track would have to be extremely large), or spherical.

Stopping LV(N) engines from overheating?
Kilmeister replied to Skorpychan's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I put the "pancake", as Annalia described it, on the bottom of my orange tank stacks and I was able to launch my rocket to orbit without having to feather the throttle except during the initial liftoff due to G-force now causing rapid deconstruction. I just had the strut the hell out of them since there was 700 some tons stacked on top of them. On the plus side it raised my payload to orbit from around 90t to 98t. -
Stopping LV(N) engines from overheating?
Kilmeister replied to Skorpychan's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Oh, so it's the tank size that's causing the overheat? I just thought it was a change in .21 First rocket I built with new patch had some mainsails that were overheating. I figured it was just a change, but I just realized its also the first time I've attached a mainsail to an orange tank instead of a grey one in a long time. I'm going to go slap a small one on the bottom of my booster stacks and see if that fixes the overheating so I don't have to feather the throttle during liftoff. -
Can I have some help with level 1 RAID?
Kilmeister replied to Themohawkninja's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Well then it depends on the software/drivers of the external device. Some present themselves to windows as standard disk which windows would let you convert it to a dynamic disk. But I think most USB devices report themselves as a removable drive. You can probably do it with a SATA converter though. I was going to test this, but unfortunately my Esata enclosure seems to have walked off... Google turned this up www.flexraid.com -
Can I have some help with level 1 RAID?
Kilmeister replied to Themohawkninja's topic in Science & Spaceflight
What version of Vista? Hardware RAID is not going to be possible with that setup, but you might be able to setup a software RAID through windows if you have Pro or Ultimate. You aren't planning on using the proposed array for anything else other than file storage are you? -
[1.12.x] Kerbal Alarm Clock v3.13.0.0 (April 10)
Kilmeister replied to TriggerAu's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I'm just messing around with .21 until this is updated, then I'll try upgrading my save and continuing. When I start up KSP first thing I do is check my schedule to see what I got coming up, and what else i should plan for. This is definitely what I'd list as an essential mod. -
Yeah I didn't have an end flight either. Don't know if it's an oversight or a change. There's a now a "Recover Ship" button, but there's no end missions stats there. Oh and this thread reminds me of this: http://xkcd.com/1172/

View of Earth from Mercury on the same day. B/W though.

Once again, all the training and technical expertise in the world pale in comparison to the might of human stupidity. Nice to see an official statement, I had just opened this forum and was about to dig to see if there was an update. oh and "Even a small fault in the launch command that was given 0.4 seconds earlier did not affect the performance of the engines." (From another page linked on that site) So it was indeed an error, but not the cause of the failure. I had a similar(albeit much less costly) incident when I was doing some IT project management. I had one of my workers successfully insert an RJ-45(Cat5 Ethernet) cable into an RJ11(Telephone Cable) wall jack. My best guess is that when it didn't fit he used a combination of a hammer, pliers, and a screwdriver to wedge that bad boy in there. I gathered all my workers around and told them to marvel at the achievement. It took a great deal of focus and determination to accomplish this feat without ever thinking "hrm, maybe this doesn't go here?" This was the handywork of a "Trained" employee.

Since we're XKCDing (verb) http://what-if.xkcd.com/38/ Personally, I've think it's extraordinary that humankind has sent something so far. Then you think of it in the grand scale of things and it only further emphasize how small we really are.
