Pinolallo, thanks for your experimental conclusions, I added your report as a gatecrasher, hope you approve! xtremespino, thanks for another thoughtful and well narrated video of your mission. Shame you missed the 1st Class Advanced Pilot Precision Award but you did pretty well to get down intact on that rough terrain. Well played! Knife edge, thanks for your craft file, yes infinigliders are in, its your call. Anything which the game permits on stock settings is allowed. Are you claiming a completed mission ? El wonso, ah! actually its already included but there was a roll back and it got lost. Advanced Pilot Precision Award in its own right and 1st Class if you get both docking and a runway landing.

You are welcome Tarmenius glad you are enjoying it, there would be no K Prize were it not for the many inspired and inspiring contributions of those who fly the challenge. So thanks to you for your mission report on the flight of La Folie, nuclear powered high altitude aero-cruise capable spaceplane, which has earned the coveted Advanced Pilot Precision Award 1st Class for docking in orbit as well as landing on the runway, along with the highly regarded Astrokerbal Distinction for landing on Minmus.

Thanks Cupcake for the vision of Jeb doing a dance to Chris Rea on Ike... cool! WafflesToo thanks for your nicely put together demonstration of how to deliver a geostationary satellite network into orbit with your Pelican-K shuttle, I am assuming the cargo bay part is not a fuel carrier or lift generator g00bd0g, thanks for your Imgur album showing your small craft. Not sure how to link this as I can't tell if you completed a K-Prize mission or just did some suborbital hops. It can be a gatecrasher if you want or if you can state a K-Prize mission was done in accordance with the rules then your word is good enough and it can be linked as a prize winner, or we can wait for a full mission report, as you wish.

Thanks for your Delta G2 mission report Cinocal, duly logged as a K-Prize winner, taking it as read that the orbit was roundish! (I guess about 74+km PE.) So congratulations on winning your K-Prize Advanced Pilot Precision Award and making the guest list.

Economy Game (self imposed ruleset).
boolybooly replied to boolybooly's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Final report... The first 24 missions were difficult financially and there were times when it seemed more than possible to go bankrupt and lose. The KSP finally broke through in the last dozen to complete the tech tree after 36 missions with over 400,000 Kerbils to spend on the next rocket. Lander 3 returning to KSC terrain -
Well played Tada, quite an achievement for a small craft considering the minimum size of the rocket only Mk1 capsule orbiter. So did you land it safely? If so you can take your place on the guest list aka roll of honour. If you dock and then land on the runway this would win the highly regarded Advanced Pilot Precision Award 1st class ! Mesklin thanks for your mission report on the double lift off - orbit - landing of Arrowhead SSTO. Congratulations on completing the K-Prize challenge once more and winning an Advanced Pilot Precision Award twice over in one mission with a completely new design which interestingly omits a vertical stabilizer without adverse effects, which is definitely food for thought.

That is a very sleek and striking looking craft there Cinocal, a worthy gatecrasher if ever there was one! (My crashometer detected non stock lift, thrust and fuel parts. Nevertheless a well put together craft and effective on its own terms.) That is an interesting thruster arrangement, must have been quite difficult to get balanced working through the SPH. Thanks for your flight report and hope you dont mind being on the gatecrashers list.

Economy Game (self imposed ruleset).
boolybooly replied to boolybooly's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Interesting idea 1D-1()T, would be glad to know how it plays out. For my latest report, the Orbiter 6 mission changed the game as it allowed the use of much more expensive hardware to make Landers 1 & 2. Lander 1 visited Minmus surface and low Mun orbit to get 3000 science and even more money and then a beefed up and thoroughly redesigned Lander 2 with new capsule and nuclear engine made a series of 6 Mün landings in different biomes in a single mission to net nearly 4000. This should be enough to open up Duna and the other planets though a lifter powerful enough to get the Lander in orbit with enough fuel to make the journey will cost big bucks. Interestingly though a reusable lifter opens up the possibility of sending multiple mission craft since you dont have to pay for the lifter each time just new components for the relatively smaller mission craft and lifter refuel. The Imgur album features this screenshot taken of Lander 2 while in mid suborbital hop. -
Thanks for your mission report immelman, glad you made it back and congratulations on your Advanced Pilot Precision Award and Astrokerbal Distinction for your Minmus landing with your twin aerojet with single aerospike design (does it have a name?) Welcome to the K-Prize guest list aka the honor roll.

11Bravo49417 thanks for your mission report and congratulations on completing the K-Prize mission with flying colours and an Advanced Pilot Precision Award for landing on the KSC runway with your classical and effective twin rocket single aerojet delta wing design. If you gave it a name I could edit the guest list btw as your description of your own craft was less than complimentary. I dont know if you noticed that you can keep the aerojet going longer by reducing throttle, thought it might be worth a mention. sploden thanks for your mission report and congratulations on winning the K-Prize once again and acquiring the minimalist record in the process as well as an Advanced Pilot Precision Award with Minisistilikio 2. The orbit looked elliptical which suggests you had fuel to spare!

I have seen this from a slingshot projection in stock.

I have been playing a self imposed pen and paper economy sim which I wrote up in mission reports. It adds revenue for science, refuel cost, range dependant recovery cost and reusability, which obliged me to work within a very tight budget and balance cost with reward. This for example was a shoreline mission. The science gain was fairly limited but it could make a profit by keeping refuel and recovery costs down and the vehicle was launched as it landed, completely reusable and due to the limits of build costs and fuel economy, it was built as the smallest Kerballed craft which could complete the mission.

Thanks for the clarification Col_Jessep, I will leave it as it is then. Congratulations to barrenwaste for constructing a craft capable of completing the K-Prize challenge and landing safely, which is no mean feat btw! Thanks for participating and for your mission report with commentary. Your craft looks like it has an effectively high power to weight ratio and saves weight and complexity by using one tank for both engine types (twin aerojet with single aerospike clipped nuclear engine). Welcome to the K-Prize party guest list (aka roll of honour). Congratulations also to El wonso for completing the K-Prize challenge with room to spare for an Advanced Pilot Precision Award for a safe landing at KSC runway, a Utilitarial Commendation for dropping 2 probes into Kerbin orbit and a Kosmokerbal Commendation for visiting the Münar SOI with SSTO X1 Probe++, a classic V wing design (which reminds me a little of the Vulcan), using the small radial rocket engines around a single central aeroengine. Thanks for your Imgur mission report and welcome to the K-Prize.

You're welcome that1guy, thanks. Thanks also Col_Jessep for a new mission report, congratulations on taking the minimalist record for v0.22 and an Advanced Pilot Precision Award, not sure if you just missed out on the 1st Class due to reloading / replaying after docking difficulties or got it by carrying on after emergency undock? Let me know and I will update if necessary, currently left it out. Have you tried disabling SAS on both craft? I find this is often effective, though there are a few craft which oscillate even then, a quick timewarp to 5x and back usually settles it long enough to get stuff done. Allternatively disable some of the reaction wheels.

Welcome back to the K-Prize that1guy thanks for your video report and congratulations on achieving a Kosmokerbal Commendation by entering Mun orbit and returning with Pices 1. A powerful ship with quad aeroengines and triple rockets, are they all nukes?

There needs to be a way round this eventually for things like reusable boosters etc, currently boosters with parachutes stop using physics when they are 2.25 Km away and so automatically "collide" with the planet if low enough and disappear unless you can follow them down, losing the ascending craft in the process.
-
Oops sorry Col_Jessep, somehow I missed your mission report. Yes research vessel Ivory Hawk is a K-Prize winner, congratulations and welcome to the K-Prize party! Your Advanced Pilot Precision Award and Kosmokerbal Commendation for visiting the Mün SOI are in the post. Thanks for the Imgur album. The science pods looked neat btw.

If it lands on Tylo without half the ship I would call that losing parts, wouldnt you? If it gets recoupled then OK, but only the mission events where the ship is complete can be counted for K-Prize because of the no decoupling rule. Its still a valid mission in its own right just technically beyond the scope of the K-Prize rules. I will add a note to the guest list link to mention the lander drop though as it is pretty cool and deserves a mention. Glad you enjoyed it and thankyou for participating and btw my name is boolybooly, four o's !

OK Mesklin, that wins the K Prize and an Advanced Pilot Precision Award and I am assuming that is reloaded from the end of the Tylo mission? Is that right? So it also earns an admirable Kosmokerbal Commendation. I am sorry if it seems pedantic. To explain, the point about decoupling is that the K-Prize is about comparing spaceplanes. Decoupling parts is explicitly not allowed in the challenge rules because it is about comparing reusable ships and decoupling is only recognised under clear provisos for payload delivery and this is also the basis for crew transfers to control seats. The detachable section which landed on Tylo does not qualify as a payload as it provides thrust for the main ship, but it decoupled and left half the ship behind. There are precedents for this, people have made capsules into rovers which decoupled and roved then rejoined the ship. The best option IMHO (without destroying the K-Prize rules) was to accept the lander as a flying rover and not disqualify the mission. The K-Prize does not have a category for that, I am happy to hear other peoples opinions on that. Sirine, Albatross is definitely a K-Prize winner and WafflesToo said he preferred if only K-Prize winners use the badge. So you are fully entitled to use the badge. Congratulations on completing the K-Prize and winning an Advanced Pilot Precision Award, thanks very much for your mission report, which works a bit like an animation if you click it fast enough!

I am glad you like it Spartwo, you can have your cake and eat it though, because if you request to stay on the gatecrashers list your entry stays, linking the mission report which earned it. If you complete the K-Prize challenge mission successfully the new report or statement will be given a separate link on the invite list (aka roll of honour) and you will just have to sort it out with the bouncers on the door! For those who wish it, succeeding at the K-Prize gives them the option to remove their gatecrasher entry and save themselves from infamy but its optional, not compulsory.

Pinolallo, I put FatBob on your gatecrashers tab! Very ingenious mesklin, clever design! IMHO you are right in principle the mission plan doesn't break the rules but it didn't land intact so... it could only be a K-Prize Exploratory Kosmokerbal Commendation for the orbit (landing was interesting and a real accomplishment but doesnt count for the K-Prize as the whole craft did not make it) and then only if you hadn't lost solar panels on the way back! Since solar panels cannot be repaired or repacked by a Kerbal the same way a parachute or a wheel can I am sorry to say they count as lost parts. So unless you can reload and land again without losing the panels the K-Prize mission is not complete... but I will wait to hear what you say. BigFatStupidHead, thanks for your mission report and the elegant looking Stiletto -d. You did well to get a twin aero engine craft with so many extra parts into orbit with so few visible intakes and richly deserve your K Prize with Pilot Proficiency Medal

At AP the prograde path is actually parallel to the planets surface for a while, so you should actually burn parallel to the surface to speed the kerbal up just a bit, so it flies further before falling to the planet and so goes wider around Kerbin, like trying to make orbit after a launch. You can detect AP in the map but also in flight as the altimeter climb needle shows zero, neither rising or falling. Kerbal orientation is currently not very intuitive IMHO, so if it is facing the direction it is travelling then yes it should be W, but you may need to be using the shift key if it is face down to Kerbin flying head first to make it go "up" in order to go forwards for example. The jetpack & Kerbal orientation is a bone of contention for me, I havent fully analysed it but it is often relative to the planet when it souldnt be and is very awkward as the kerbal is feet down and keeps changing orientation if you are in a close orbit, then if you use the EVA pack it wastes a huge amount of EVA fuel reorienting the kerbal (up to 3% but usually a tap on the D key speeds that up a bit), so keep that deactivated until you want to use it. The fuel runs out btw, if you right click the Kerbal you will get a report on how much is left. You will need at least 10% left to make a rendezvous typically especially if you have to change orientation in the process. Kerbals also have an annoying tendency to flip themselves off ladders if the ladder axis is perpendicular to the Kerbal, in which case its easiet to either reorient the craft so the ladder is parallel to the Kerbal or wait a quarter orbit for the Kerbal to rotate 90°.

jpinard I hope you found a solution but for the record you need to get jeb to make a prograde thrust at apoapsis [AP] to raise the periapsis [PE]. You wont need much push, just a few seconds, the problem will be aligning him correctly without a navball. To do this you can use Kerbin and the star field in the map and match landmarks and stars to the starfield/Kerbin in the flight screen, aim appropriately and press the appropriate key. Check PE in the map after a quick keypress to be sure it is going the right direction, it wont be much more than a couple of seconds of push that if you get the direction right.
