Yes, yes, yes, and... Yes. Buy the game. Don't do anything like building a station or moonbase until the update comes out; it entered experimental phase a while ago and hopefully will be out soon. Also, a word of advice: Don't ask for release dates. I know the post doesn't ask for them explicitly, but Squad doesn't like giving away release dates.

They seem to be better at doing ground than doing space.

I used no mods in my main savefile for 0.20, but when 0.21 comes out I may start using mechjeb and engineer. That said, I keep a second game in which I like to install mods, but I don't do much with them.
