Best Ascent Profile for SSTO?
inigma replied to inigma's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Does anyone else have suggestions to answer my OP? I'm trying to figure out what best methods to achieve orbit with a generic SSTO most people have come across. -
SSI CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS (from our SSI Company Thread in Rocket Builders) Certification Process 1. You must submit a link to your craft file. 2. You must submit a control manual indexing all custom craft controls. 3. You must submit a flight profile or sequence of steps to achieve orbit from Kerbin*, as well as any special landing and other instructions as needed.** 4. You must submit an imgur album of your certification flight showing every step of your flight profile, as well as undoctored pics of actual target requirements met for the class. All certification screenshots must show your craft resource levels at all times where applicable. An edited certification video in lieu of an imgur album is also acceptable (and is preferred). 5. You must submit a link to your own Spacecraft Exchange thread in order for your craft to be published in our General Catalog. Feel free to follow the thread title format of the Proton III in my signature below for ideas on how to title your Spacecraft Exchange thread. 6. You must post all required items above in a single post in this main SSI thread along with your desired craft name, and the class you wish to certify for. *For obvious reasons, MMUs, CMUs, and ESUs are exempt from providing a flight profile. **ESUs must provide a landing sequence profile. Current Kinds (In Order of Range): Manned Maneuvering Units (MMU) - personal command chair units Cargo Management Units (CMU) (aka workbee/workpod) - station and ship construction and transfer craft Emergency Support Units (ESU) (aka lifepod/escape pod) - landing airless or vacuum craft or both Orbital Transfer Vehicles (OTV) (aka shuttlepod) - capable of less than Shuttlecraft certification Aeroshuttles (AS) (atmospheric landing only) - OTVs that can't land on an airless body Shuttlecraft - capable of undocking 120km, landing at KSC, and redocking at 120k without refueling Runabouts - larger than a shuttlecraft in footprint/size Manned Maneuvering Units (MMU) Certification Requirements: Any command chair crafts meant for navigating stations and ship exteriors are classified as MMUs. Name Format Example: SSI MMU-1 -1 denotes number it was first MMU craft certified by SSI Cargo Management Units (CMU) Certification Requirements: Any autonomous or enclosed maneuvering unit containing docking ports for picking up and moving parts and spacecraft around stations. Such craft usually have RCS and a number of docking ports and access to docking port adapters to be able to act as nearby space station tugs. Name Format Examples: SSI CMU-4j Workbee Phoenix SSI CMU-6cs Workpod Phoenix -Workbee denotes autonomous craft but can also be manned -Workpod denotes manned craft only -4 denotes number of ports -6 denotes number of ports -j denotes craft contains Docking Port Jr. -cs denotes craft contains at least one standard Docking Port and at least one Docking Port Senior -Phoenix is a craft name Emergency Support Units (ESU) Certification Requirements: Any landing craft intended to land on various bodies in a one-way trip. All ESUs contain a docking port to dock with rescue ships. Name Format Example: SSI Phoenix (ESU-2AV7 Escape Pod) -Phoenix is a craft name -2 denotes number of occupants possible -A denotes atmospheric landing capable -V denotes airless landing capable -7 denotes airless landing value as capable of landing on the Mun (see chart below) Orbital Transfer Vehicles (OTV) Any craft that meets the shuttlecraft footprint, but is not able to fully certify as a shuttlecraft for any reason, but can still land on the Mun and return to a 10km orbit. Name Format Example: SSI Phoenix (OTV-1B Shuttlepod) -Phoenix is a craft name -1 is the number of Kerbals it can carry -B is the highest orbital altitude target range achievable when launched from KSC (see chart below) Aeroshuttles (AS) Any craft that meets the shuttlecraft footprint, but is not able to fully certify as a shuttlecraft for any reason, and can not land on an airless body such as Minmus or the Mun. Name Format Example: SSI Phoenix (AS-1B Aeroshuttle) -Phoenix is a craft name -1 is the number of Kerbals it can carry -B is the highest orbital altitude target range achievable when launched from KSC (see chart below) Shuttlecraft: Any craft whose width is less than five FL-T800 Fuel Tanks wide, and less than two FL-T800 fuel tanks long, and is capable of undocking from a 120k station, landing at KSC, and redocking at 120k all without refuelling. SSI Engineers have final say on accepting a craft's footprint as meeting this class. Name Format Example: SSI Phoenix II (Type-3B Shuttlecraft) -Phoenix is a craft name -3 number of kerbals it can carry -B roundtrip distance target range (see chart below) -II is the second variation of the craft. You may specify any variation designation: (I,1,Mk.1,a,A, etc.) Runabouts: Any craft whose width is larger than five FL-T800 Fuel Tanks wide, or longer than two FL-T800 fuel tanks long, and is capable of undocking from a 120k station, landing at KSC, and redocking at 120k all without refuelling. SSI Engineers have final say on accepting a craft's footprint as meeting this class. Name Format Example: SSI Phoenix II (Type-3B Runabout) -Phoenix is a craft name -3 number of kerbals it can carry -B roundtrip distance target range (see chart below) -II is the second variation of the craft. You may specify any variation designation: (I,1,Mk.1,a,A, etc.) Certified Craft Target Ranges Escape Pods Airless Landing dV values for escape pods: 1 - Gil 30 2 - Pol 130 3 - Minmus 180 4 - Bop 220 5 - Ike 390 6 - Dres 430 7 - Mun 580 8 - Eeloo 620 9 - Vall 860 10 - Moho 870 11 - Tylo 2270 Shuttlepods & Aeroshuttles Orbital altitudes possible from KSC A - 70km-80km B - 80km-90km C - 90km-100km D - 100km-110km E - 110km-120km Shuttlecraft & Runabouts More than 120k Station Round Trip Range (and One Way Trip Range) from Kerbin Designations: A - Minmus Roundtrip (Mun) B - Mun Roundtrip (Ike, Gilly, Duna) C - Ike Roundtrip (Gilly, Duna) D - Gilly Roundtrip (Duna, Pol, Dres, Vall, Jool Low Orbit, Eeloo) E - Duna Roundtrip (Pol, Dres, Vall, Jool Low Orbit, Eeloo) F - Pol Roundtrip (Dres, Vall, Jool Low Orbit, Eeloo, Tylo, Bop, Moho, Laythe) G - Dres Roundtrip (Vall, Jool Low Orbit, Eeloo, Tylo, Bop, Moho, Laythe) H - Vall Roundtrip (Jool Low Orbit, Eeloo, Tylo, Bop, Moho, Laythe) I - Jool Low Orbit Roundtrip (Eeloo, Tylo, Bop, Moho, Laythe) J - Eeloo Roundtrip (Tylo, Bop, Moho, Laythe) K - Tylo Roundtrip (Bop, Moho, Laythe) M Roundtrip (Moho, Laythe) N -Moho Roundtrip (Laythe, Eve) O -Laythe Roundtrip (Eve) P -Eve Roundtrip (Low Kerbol Orbit) Q - Low Kerbol Orbit Roundtrip So a Type-2E shuttlecraft is capable of carrying two Kerbals on a round trip to Duna, but is also theoretically capable of making a one way trip to Pol, Dres, Vall, Jool Low Orbit, or even Eeloo since the delta V requirements are the same or less.

Optimal height for space stations
inigma replied to naxhi24's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Alt: Benefit 70k: Space 80k: Parking Orbit 120k: Next Level Timewarp 160k: Graphics Downgrade for Kerbin (large stations benefit) 240k: Next Level Timewarp (best for refueling depots) With these values above, it make sense to place your most used station above 120k. Shuttlecraft Systems Inc. develops VTOL SSTOs auxillary spacecraft (aka shuttlecraft) capable of undocking at 120k, landing at KSC, and flying back up to a station at 120k, all without refueling. Beyond 160k, spaceplane size requirements increase so as not to fit the SSI shuttlecraft footprint or else they force one-way shuttlecraft trips. -
Thank You!

Ive seen a number of vids where shots of the underbelly of a plane or engine cluster are taken as if a camera is mounted there. What plugin or mod is that? I would post this in Q&A but the mobile version of that forum is missing a prefix selection field in the new topic form preventing submission since an error comes back saying the field selection is required - but there is no field.

Shuttlecraft Systems Inc. Anyone familiar with Star Trek will know what a shuttlecraft is. Short, stocky, and functional, they don't look like space planes. They look like personal sporting auxiliary spacecraft. Shuttlecraft are all stock parts, are somewhat diamond or boxed in shape and balance, sleek with small wings (think tail fin sized), and capable of launching from a runway, or VTOL (preferred), and making it into designated orbits and other rendezvous possibilities. Such craft are also capable of leaving space stations or other spacecraft in orbit (once fueled by their orbiting mother craft), and returning to said mother craft or other crafts in orbit without refueling. Since the craft are designated as auxiliary spacecraft, they are attachable to space stations and larger ships via a docking port. If you are interested in joining Shuttlecraft Systems Inc. or in submitting your independent designs for SSI certification, please visit our company thread in the Spacecraft Builders forum here: Shuttlecraft Systems Inc. Added video to the OP! It covers launching, orbiting, docking, landing, and also features: land from station and back to station return! A true auxiliary spacecraft for those who want to go up and down in style.
-
wow... amazing. just wow. i want one. i suppose you could just use your docking ports to construct a massive launcher around it.

My first ever SSTO. I have finally tweaked and perfected the Aeon Class Shuttlecraft, ready for inclusion in the SSI General Catalog after another tester can confirm they too can get it into orbit, and return safely. The Aeon Class: Is an SSI original Type I Shuttlecraft prototype, which means it was developed by an SSI member, and is capable of carrying 1 Kerbal up to a 120km orbit, SSTO style, losing no parts, rendezvous and dock, and come back to the KSC, and all this remotely (no pilot required). Also it can depart fully fueled from 120km, land, and come back to orbit, rendezvous and dock. Being SSI minded, it fits the SSI footprint of a small, lightweight, auxillary spacecraft. This version is not a VTOL version, however, one is being developed. Part Count:68 Fuel Remaining at 80km orbit: 125 Fuel Remaining at 120km orbit: 110 Real Time to 80km Orbit: 7 minutes This craft is capable of flaming out and going into a spin, recovering, and still have the remaining fuel above. This craft is designed to get into orbit fast. Very fast. See launch profile below. The image where the Aeon is docked to the station and has parachutes is a version just before the Release version since the feasibility of a powered or glide landing had not yet been tested. The final image shows a successful landing. Shuttlecraft Type I Aeon Class Craft File Flight Profile: (125 units fuel left @ 80km)(80rcs) 1. Pitch up to 65 deg until alt 32km. (Ignite Aerospike at 18km and shutdown Jet Engines to avoid flameout spin.) 2. Pitch to 45 deg until apopasis (Ap) is 50km. 3. Pitch to center of vector until Ap is 80km. 4. Decrease throttle to keep Ap arrival 10>30s Controls: 1. Aerospike 2. Jet Engines 3. Intakes 0. Ladder Please let me know if you have any questions. This is my first official SSTO. For those of you who don't trust your own manual flying skills (and also don't use mods), the 71 part Aeon Class Shuttlecraft version R (for Rescue) includes a separable cockpit with parachute. In such a configuration, both the cockpit can survive, and the main body is still guidable via the onboard cpu: Shuttlecraft Type I Aeon Class R Craft File If you are interested in joining Shuttlecraft Systems, Inc. please check out the link in my sig below.

My very first SSTO ever: it can rendezvous and dock at 120km, and maybe also 240km. Shuttlecraft Type 1 - Aeon Class (Prototype) Working on this thing led me to create Shuttlecraft Systems Inc. Link in my sig.

Awesome man. I and others are looking forward to seeing what you post.

Want to join SSI? We could use you or at least publish this design or something similar. Can you post a craft file in our Shuttlecraft Systems Inc. thread in my sig?

Star Trek inspired SSTO/VTOL 1 Man Shuttlecraft "Grendel"
inigma replied to Karmacoma's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
ooh me likely. playing now... prob will add to general catalog in the Type Series. Way to go! -
We have a need for all Types. But all designers are challenged to make their submitted SSTOs into VTOLs eventually. VTOL is preferred, but we'll take standard runway launch and recovery for Types that don't have one and don't have good looking candidates. In fact, I wonder if it's possible to make the SSI Type VII Gladius class prototype into a VTOL... if you want a footprint challenge. In fact, I'd love to see a seven kerbal VTOL SSTO the size of a standard StarTrek esque shuttlecraft. Go for it. You're an awesome designer. Anything you contribute that fits the SSI design philosophy will certainly be included in the General Catalog if not included in the Type Series. Feel free to post your desired Type VII candidate craft file link in the SSI thread.

Would you be interested in joining Shuttlecraft Systems Inc? We could use your talents (in fact you inspired me to create SSI). We'd also love to incorporate your Gladius as a Shuttlecraft Type III candidate in our general catalog if you'd like to submit it.
