Kepler-452b Kepler Announcement 23 July
Albert VDS replied to eddiew's topic in Science & Spaceflight
So according to Kepler-452b's Wikipedia page it's 1.05 AU from it's star. Would that mean that it has a better HZD rating than Kepler-438b? -

Maybe something glitches, because the crew reported that it deployed. -

Work is being done on the landing pad: Source

And that's what SpaceX is doing, well actually changing to strut with a higher load. But we are not discussing if it's a SPOF, it's about; can you blame the supplier? If it sells it's products with a certificate that promises a max load then it should do that.

It did deploy, but it took a bit of work to get it to. -

Kepler-452b Kepler Announcement 23 July
Albert VDS replied to eddiew's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Kepler can't detect atmospheres. It would be great to find an Earth 2.0. -
Well this washing machine can't be replaced by a spare because it's already in an active building, there is no way of getting it out, and if the washing machine breaks the whole building explodes.
-
Why would you need to redesign a rocket if you are buying certified struts that will never reach their max load? Basically what you are saying is that a company, who certified* a product that broke at 1/5th of it's max load, can't be blamed? * attest or confirm in a formal statement. Or to put it this way: If you buy a, let's say, washing machine and use it as intended. The washing machine company guarantees that it will work for at least 10 years. It breaks at 2 years, do you hold the washing machine company accountable?

As far as I know this is how it would go: 1: Search for signal made by a life form from another solar system, either an intentional signal*(easier to detect) or a leaked into space signal(harder to detect). If we can verify it then we know that we are not alone. 2: Now such a signal has been found it can be examined/decoded, an intentional signal* would easier to decode than one leaked into space. Like we have sent the "Arecibo message", "Cosmic Call" and "A Message from Earth", though not ongoing signals. Radio waves are our best shot at finding a signal because that's what we know is the best way to communicate at those distances. Maybe it's the only way, maybe there are better ways but it's the only option at the moment. All the other options you mentioned are not important to look for simply because they aren't directed at us, we don't know how it would work, are pure fiction or are deadly to the recipients. That might be a possibility, but that doesn't mean it will go that way for us or any other alien civilizations. There are a whole lot of other paths to be taken, some more likely than others. The only way to know something for sure is to not look, because then we know we wont find anything.

[1.1]Hullcam VDS - mod adopted by linuxgamer
Albert VDS replied to Albert VDS's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I'll see if I can replicate it in the current version. Alright, thanks. The next update will have more changes to the cameras, mainly the starting cameras. Also, there will be a new camera. -
[1.1]Hullcam VDS - mod adopted by linuxgamer

I'm not getting that NRE, maybe I accidentally fixed it if it's due to Hullcam VDS. -
We don't need to understand it, the main goal is to receive such a signal so we know that we are not alone. It doesn't matter what level the civilization is at, as long as we find a signal. Of course it can only be radio waves as that's the only thing we could detect in the search. Or we might never know everything about the universe. And no one is saying that we are going to talk to ET. That's true, but it doesn't mean we can't look. For example: We wont explore exo-planets we find with Keppler, at least not in the foreseeable future, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't look for exo-planets.
-
MP meant visible light and he also explains about CBR. An infinite, unchanging universe as in no expansion of space and do demise of stars.
-
They are going with a strut which can stand a higher load.
-
You are completely wrong on what SETI is, it's goal is not to call with ET and see how the weather is, it's goal is to find ET's radio waves which are seeping into space just like we are doing now. Edit: If anyone thinks that SETI is a waste of money then they should compared it to some of the things on this infographic: (It's from 2010, but still relevant as a comparison)
-
If you compare where we have looked and how big the universe actually is then we can come to the conclusion that we haven't started to search yet. In 2016 SETI is going to search per day what they did in one year. Of course the outcome could be that the found signal is from a dead civilization, but it could as easily be alive or evolved into a whole different species. But even if they are extinct it would still give the answer to the most important question of all: "Are we alone?". Your second sentence doesn't make any sense... could you try to rephrase it? In your last sentence you are assuming that Earth is a honey pot for any Aliens, that it's one of the best candidate for aliens to settle on, that they invented a significant form of space travel and that they can thrive on our planet.

Yes that's the jist of it.

It's a phone only conference. Update:

This is not going to be a live steam for the public, however someone at Nasaspaceflight.com is joining the telecon. You can see his updates here: http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=37739.msg1406592#msg1406592
