[1.3.1] Ferram Aerospace Research: v0.15.9.1 "Liepmann" 4/2/18
Hodo replied to ferram4's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
This is what I learned to do. Very slow gradual direction changes with rockets, my planes, it depends on the design. Some can turn on dime, others turn in a few continents.- 14,073 replies

Not exactly sure. But at a glance it looks like you don't have enough nose lift, which means your elevators are losing all authority so you need bigger elevators on the rear of the craft. But again I don't know, I haven't flown anything in the stock KSP fluid dynamic model, I mean aerodynamic model since I got the game some 800hrs ago.

[1.3.1] Ferram Aerospace Research: v0.15.9.1 "Liepmann" 4/2/18
Hodo replied to ferram4's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Wow you gave up easily, I hope you are more patient with life otherwise you are in for a ROUGH road ahead. FAR and SAS don't often get along, I have no problems running my SAS on, on any of my craft. But I have read others having major issues with the SAS. So you may want to look at your control surfaces, and aerodynamic design of your craft. If it is shaped like a brick, it will fly like one.- 14,073 replies

SSTO with the new RAPIER engine
Hodo replied to SpenSpaceCorp's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
It flames out the same as the turbojet, at 10% air required. But the difference is the RAPIER like all SABRE engines will switch over to closed cycle to turn into a rocket on its own, so there is little to no chance at a flame-out. RAPIER/SABRE engines also continue to generate a decent amount of thrust at mach 6, or around 1900m/s, unlike a turbojet which is struggling to make thrust at those speeds. -
Minmus is easier due to the lower gravity than the Mun. The but without a picture we have no clue if it is built with enough d/v.

[0.90] Procedural Dynamics - Procedural Wing 0.9.3 Dec 24
Hodo replied to DYJ's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Here is one of my heavy lift SSTOs, SP-406. As you can see by the wing design it has a relatively shallow wing, not a large delta wing. Yes that is 108tons in the cargo bay, the later SP-406VB can carry a bit more into orbit and it has VTOL abilities. -
SSTO R.A.P.I.E.R. (Ver 0.23) Challenge (Closed)
Hodo replied to Sirine's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Thank you for that review, I will take a look at it and see if I can improve on the control problems a bit more. I rarely mess with stock parts so it is a bit of a challenge for me. EDIT- I just checked the craft, it isn't as twitchy as thought, are the control surfaces set like this? Canards-Roll Large Control surfaces on the wings-Pitch Tail-Yaw. -
SSTO with the new RAPIER engine
Hodo replied to SpenSpaceCorp's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
To add to what Tada said, the RAPIER if run in FAR, also runs a lot faster than the turbojet, you can push it to Mach 6 with ease, but the stock turbojet is struggling at mach 6... trust me I managed to get one to mach 6.4 and it was only making 5kn of thrust. -

Hodo replied to DYJ's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Ok it looks like you are having some weird control issue, have you checked the debug screen to see what faults are coming across if any? The only thing I can think of in FAR that would be causing your issue, is the size of your wing. You have VERY big wings for a craft that isn't that large. Large wing surface equals large amounts of drag. So big deep wings will create huge amounts of drag but also generate large amounts of lift. So the best bet if you need to go faster is smaller wings, both in length and depth. Great example of real life fast aircraft, look at the Mig-25 Foxbat, it can go over mach 3, but it has pretty small wings for its mass, and handles like a brick below supersonic speeds. But on the other side of the coin, the DG-800 Glider, has LONG shallow wings that generate a GREAT deal of lift and have very little actual drag. But the Boeing 747, has big deep long wings that generate a great deal of lift, at a decent speed, but would fly off at supersonic speeds. -

X-Plane 10 flight model (Blade element theory)
Hodo replied to SRSR333's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Superfish is right on both counts. I love realistic flight sims, this is why I have never uninstalled FreeFalcon5.5 off of my computer, and a decent flight model isn't that big of a memory hog, its just numbers that the computer crunches and checks against a set of another numbers. Something a computer does when running a spreadsheet program. -
From that picture you should have started your retro burn around 1hr 4s ago. And from your KER you don't have the fuel to do it anyway. You only have 3000m/s d/v left, you are going to need AT LEAST 7600m/s. Moho is one of the hardest planets to get to, because of its lower gravitational SOI, lack of atmosphere for aerobraking, and proximity to the sun or more importantly distance from Kerbin. Your best bet with that craft is to do a return burn to Kerbin, you probably have enough fuel for that. Then build a new craft and try again on the next launch window.

Can't really tell what else is going on in that clip. But judging by the short clip, I can tell you there are several things wrong with that craft that will cause that problem. 1- No ailerons, you know the things that control roll, they are often placed near the end of the wings 2- The thrust is blowing right back on your elevators, that are most likely acting as your roll control also. This is damaging them and causing uneven airflow over them, if you are using FAR. If not they are just damaging them and I don't think KSP knows how to handle it otherwise. In other words you are burning your tail off. 3- To much throttle on take off. I highly suggest throttling back on any craft that has higher than a 2.9:1 TWR on take off. I know my mach 6 aircraft for the Machingbird Challenge, has a 4.79:1 TWR and if it takes off at full power it does that exact same thing. So I throttle back to 25% and it flies fine till about 10km then I go full throttle. 4- We have no clue what speed you are going, what mods you are using, and what else is wrong with that craft. So if you want a more direct answer to your problem please post more information, otherwise I am just urinating in the breeze. -

Easy DIY fix. Add this to the cfg file for each of the Pwing parts you want to add to the tech tree under the section that says, //--- editor parameters ---. TechRequired = supersonicFlight entryCost = 5400 This will add the parts to the tech tree. IF you have B9 you will run into a conflict with one part, the SH 4m control surface, so rename the PWing version something different. In example I named my PW SH 4m Control surface, this title = PWSH 4m Control Surface. This fixed the conflict issue with the B9 SH 4m Control Surface and let me unlock both in the tech tree. -
Kethane Pack 0.9.2 - New cinematic trailer! - 1.0 compatibility update
Hodo replied to Majiir's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I had this problem a couple of weeks ago, I fixed it by uninstalling EVERYTHING KSP, and reinstalling everything. Something got corrupted somewhere, never did find out where. I backed up all my save game files, and ships then deleted KSP and reinstalled it. -

No rush, just a request. Because I know there are quite a few people out there like me who understand the basics of aerodynamics but not that familiar with it.- 14,073 replies

And the VSR-8 has completed its shake down test run to Minimus. It had to dock at KerSta-2 to refuel so this wasn't a single stage to Minimus, but more a test to see if it can make it to another planet and still land on Kerbin. I unfortunately will not be able to release the craft file on it as I have a custom part on there, I reworked the kethane generator into a liquid fuel generator that creates 10 charge at the cost of .5 liquid fuel. For scale And finally home.

[1.3.1] Ferram Aerospace Research: v0.15.9.1 "Liepmann" 4/2/18
Hodo replied to ferram4's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Not sure about planes, but I know in cars if you have a flat rear the car creates a "wake" or a vortex swirl behind it, which can create lift off of the rear wheels. Which as you would imagine is bad for a rear wheel drive car. But this only happens at high speeds in cars, more than 100mph, and rarely has any affect on daily drivers. I imagine something like that happens with aircraft.- 14,073 replies
