That's awful. You've ruined it for me. ;_; -
Happy Back to the Future Day! Wed 21st Oct 2015 (Discussion Thread)

04:29 is early morning. It was pitch dark, before sunrise. As far as I can remember, the clock in the car did not use silly AM/PM notation, but a full 24 hour clock. -

The time in the movie is 04:29 (04:29 AM) and that applies to the time zone of the place on Earth where the car was. It's a unique moment for everyone, so everyone has to convert the time. It does not happen a bunch of times, one per time zone. The setup is in a fictional town in California and California uses Pacific Time Zone which is UTC-7 or UTC-8, depending on the time of the year. Daylight saving time makes it UTC-7, if I'm correct. That means that right now it's 07:45 there. -
You can either calculate it or check it with HyperEdit by positioning it in the lowest possible orbit. Then just add 100-200 m/s to the orbiting speed. First cosmic speed equation is: v1 = sqrt (G Mp/rp) or v1 = sqrt (μ/rp) where G is the gravitational constant (same as in our universe) Mp is the mass of the body you're orbiting and rp is the distance between the center of the body's mass and center of your mass. μ is obviously a product of G and Mp and is called standard gravitational parameter with the unit [m3 s−2].

That's a huge plane.

I wouldn't say the best, but if you think so, thanks. The ship has passed Joolean orbit. Its main dish is pointed towards Kerbin. So far the systems work fine. Onward towards Sarnus' orbit.

Why do people make so many NASA conspiracy Theories?

I think I found the page/admins/users behind the attack. https://www.facebook.com/FreeOurFlatEarth -
Why do people make so many NASA conspiracy Theories?
lajoswinkler replied to fredinno's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Both their Youtube and Facebook pages are under attack. Apparently it started on Youtube and now Facebook. It's insane, basically all of the comments are made by flatearth retards. Truly a coordinated attack. -
I don't even know where to start with this silly, monstruously expensive idea. Good luck cooling down a 1000 MW reactor core in vacuum. Heat engines need a heatsink, you know? It's the heat flow that does the work, not heat itself. Very silly idea, completely useless one. Fission power plants are built next to a lake, river or sea for a reason.

Why do people make so many NASA conspiracy Theories?
lajoswinkler replied to fredinno's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Yes, the NASA's Facebook page is under attack, folks. https://www.reddit.com/r/SmarterEveryDay/comments/3p6tjm/destin_here_if_youre_up_for_it_lets_take_a_minute/ It started with one video and now their entire page is being attacked. Do not engage in discussions with them. Use the report link and report it for spam or scam. -
Why do people make so many NASA conspiracy Theories?
lajoswinkler replied to fredinno's topic in Science & Spaceflight
For those of you who dwell on Facebook, check out the NASA's official page. I think either a troll party has started or the insane people have escaped some asylum. Most comments are accusing NASA of hiding the "truth" about "flat Earth". It's incredible. Almost all of the comments. They've taken over. -
This should be taught in KSP schools.

Can Kerbol system exist in the real world
lajoswinkler replied to dangerouspeople1's topic in Science & Spaceflight
It can and it's not negligible. Even our oceans are considerably squished. Without that, they would be more than 10 m higher/deeper. Compressibility of liquids and solids is pretty realistic when incredible pressures are used, such as the ones inside planetary cores. -
Can Kerbol system exist in the real world
lajoswinkler replied to dangerouspeople1's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Kerbol is a burning ball of coal, obviously! Nah, the system is tiny and has some properties of the real world. That does not work because the physical constants are all wrong. -
Why do people make so many NASA conspiracy Theories?
lajoswinkler replied to fredinno's topic in Science & Spaceflight
You're wrong on this one. The less a society is developed, the worse and the more widespread the conspiracy theories will be because they correlate with ignorance and average poorly civilized behaviour. Don't judge the presence of a nationality on an English-speaking part of the Internet as an indicator. Why do we see lots of US American conspiracy quack sources? Because US American content dominates no matter what the topic is. Other nationalities that use English or are fluent enough in it are relatively smaller in size. Do we (or Google Trends or whatever) have an accurate measurement of these things on the Internet in the Middle East? No. Different language, even different scripts! Internet is a much, much larger place than we are aware of, but we just don't see it because the links between these areas are very poor. We have enormous lack of awareness for online volume written in Cyrillic, all sorts of Chinese characters and their derivatives... That's an enormous amount of material, volume and social network communities that simply have low interconnectivity. These online worlds touch at places like certain Facebook pages by people who use both languages and Latin script. With that in mind, one can notice the enormous amounts of conspiracy theories and general hatred coming from certain areas, which is caused by current events, as well. I can ensure you that, if one would randomly probe opinions of statistically significant quantities of people in each country, that things like creationism, antivaccine ideas, NASA conspiracies like "Apollo hoax", general and specific superstitions, hatred and discrimination of minorities, disagreement with acceptance of human and civil rights, would be absolutely enormous outside urbanized, Western societies. It's nothing weird. It's just how things always worked. The reasons we see the popularity of it in the West is awareness and presence of nutty people who have enough access on the English speaking, Latin written parts of the Internet. I come from a country that uses Latin script, but one of Slavic languages. Trust me, more than 90% of the user generated comments are drenched in stupidity and hatred. It just gets worse the less socially developed a country is. The Internet allows us to have a peak in the reality because anonimity gives confidence to people. Behind tourist offers, nice smiles, great food, you'll find biggotry, stupidity and brutality. -

If you're showing that site as an example of stupid people's idea, then you're right on spot. -
Why do people make so many NASA conspiracy Theories?
lajoswinkler replied to fredinno's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Indeed, most of them thought that will happen instantly and haven't predicted this period of enormous displayed stupidity. True, but their vigilance causes irritation among smarter people. Haven't you noticed the scientific skepticism getting bigger in the last five years? We're in a turbulent period. I think it will turn out fine. Internet has partially catalytic function, and partially generates new phenomena. -

lajoswinkler replied to fredinno's topic in Science & Spaceflight
They're doing it because they are stupid. Stupid people usually have the tendency to go bold with their statements. They are usually very vocal. The smarter someone is, the greater the chance is that they will be careful about their claims. Also, something very important - we aren't getting stupider. It's just that the average folks' access to WWW is getting easier than ever and therefore stupid folks have an ever easier way of displaying their stupidity. You can see how the emergence of moronic ideas (chemtrails, Nibiru 2012 crap) correlates with the increase in WWW accessability. The stupidity level of the world is probably going down, if not being stagnant. I think it's going down. -
You're using the word "chemicals" as a synonim for "chemical compounds" which is incorrect. Chemical compounds are made out of elements. Chemicals are anything we prepare in a chemical process. Stuff that sits in a bottle with a label describing the stuff inside. Sodium chloride is a chemical compound. These are chemicals. We couldn't call carbon a chemical because it comes in a variety of allotropes. Graphite powder is a chemical, though. Silicon comes amorphous and crystalline, so we need to specify that, too.

They're certainly larger than permafrost holes in Syberia. Perhaps it's the places where some sort of an eutectic mixture of ices seeps towards the surface and causes the more pure surface ices to thaw and collapse in the depths, forming a cavity and then the top material just collapses. It certainly goes along the hypothesis about large Rayleigh-Bénard cells. The distribution might be attributed to the moving of internal flows that come and go. Each time they come, they are moved to the side.
-
No mention of them coming in pairs. It's obvious and so puzzling. Probably has something to do with the internal flows, given that they follow the same pattern, but I can't figure out what's happening.
