    One issue I come across with Titan stems from the fact that there were single chamber and double chamber LR-87s that were tested, so you'll sometimes see people reporting "Four LR-87s" as a LDC Titan first stage when they mean four combustion chambers in either two pairs or four singles. It can be hard to determine which is which.

    The LR-87 and Titan II first stage really formed a very awesome rocket. Together they had a propellant mass fraction of 0.96. The only thing keeping it from being a (very) low payload SSTO was the fact that there was no throttleability to the engine.

  2. @CobaltWolf Yep. The LDC (Large Diameter Core) Titans started at 180 inches (there were proposed adapters for Titan IIIM - Apollo and Titan IIIG - Apollo, but both involved necking down or up). There was however a fair amount of artwork that simply didn't match the actual plans, and I think that is what you have seen.

    Edit: Remember, going to a 15 foot core over the 10 foot core doubles the tank volume (with no stretch), and a 16 foot core is over two and a half times the volume of a same-length 10 foot core. The 19 foot Barbarian core is over three and a half times the volume of a same-length standard titan core.

    There have obviously been several version of a large diameter Titan that have been proposed ranging from 15 to 19 foot diameter versions (I have specifically come across versions at 180, 192, 196, and 228 [BARBARIAN] inch diameters). These correspond to scale diameters of 2.8575m, 3.048m, 3.1115m, and 3.6195m. Based on that, I'd suggest that the Large Diameter Prometheus use a 3m diameter (the diameter tended to go up over time and the 180 inch Titan was the first), and a later 3.75m scale for the later Barbarian. For LDP (Large Diameter Prometheus), I'd basically use a doubled-up Prometheus 3 engine, and a Prometheus 4 variant later. Even on the LDP 3  I'd draw from the Prometheus 4 anyway as it represents the advances that would have been integrated in any production line change. The upper stage engine options are either a lower thrust single engine upper stage with a larger bell or a pair of standard second stage engines. Barbarian would likely pull an all new engine with 5 bells and at least 250% of the Prometheus 4 rated power, and the same style as Prometheus 4. Upper stage on the Barbarian might actually be a single chamber version of the LR-87, not the LR-91. Were I made to recommend just one rocket, it would be a 3m LDP using pair engines and an art style between Prometheus 3 and 4 with a single upper stage engine with a large bell.

    Things are slow here as I'm trying my hardest to get through the next couple weeks. Midterm projects are swamping me despite trying to work ahead earlier in the quarter. Serious dev will probably resume the second week of February.

    Fair enough! And there goes my attempt to back-door in Delta IV (The Atlas V Phase 2 tanks were Delta IV tanks with a different length).

  5. I might just remove them at this point or leave them as ullage RCS thrusters (allowing pitch and yaw control). The number of instances where Transtage was to dock with anything else were limited in the first place, which is why after I actually though about it, now say to leave them (I'm finally internalizing the not-exact-copy nature of the mod).

    That's not what I'm getting from the diagrams where they are attached to payloads. I'm seeing RCS quads under an aerodynamic cover for launch.

     

    Edit: At least that is the case for the X-20 launch. Other versions show six thrusters  (two Pitch, two Yaw, and two Roll).

I would definitely like to include the baby boosters (they're adorable) and will definitely look into the stack versions of the SRMs. On those diagrams, do I see that there are two TVC tanks? The SRMU never actually received a different nozzle... I, uh, wound up not having texture space. I might be able to sneak it in to the texture sheet for the Titan IV tanks, since that doesn't have extra bits such as decouplers, which took up room on the other sheets.

    The Baby Centaur might get made when I take another look at Centaur - I have about 2/3 of a texture sheet after doing the new interstages.

    On the note of the SRMs, do you (or anyone) know what the actual offset of the thrust vector was on the radial boosters? Right now I believe they're about 4 degrees which seems a bit much. If I reduce them slightly they would probably be more realistic, as well as more efficient. Also, what was the decoupler mechanism like for the SRMs? I've been wondering if I need to add a new one to support the Titan parts.

    Yep, two TVC tanks on the single stick Titans. As for the thrust offset on the UA-1205/7s, it was 6 degrees (0.105 radians) and was not derived from the thrust vectoring, but from the fact that the nozzle was canted at that angle. Here is an NTRS document entitles " A Study of Performance and Cost Improvement Potential of the 120-IN.- (3.05m) Diameter Solid Rocket Motor". Diagrams start on page 22 and run through 24. Section 3.1-3.5 (pages 74-110, with a specific table on 110 with the numbers) talks about the maximum gimbal being 3 degrees for inline payloads with up to 11 degrees of gimbal for winged payloads (Use of UA-1207s as Shuttle boosters), and 9 degrees of gimbal with zero offset for the straight design. This is for the single Stick SRM rocket and for the SRM core + two to five SRM booster design that show up later in the document (starting around 138).

    And some form of properly thrust aligned SRM (either the UA1205 or the SRMU [because of the different nozzle on the SRMU this might work) that can be used in the Stick configuration:

    Also, if possible, a domed tank top for the 'Baby Centaur' high energy kick stage (NTRS document with diagrams). It could probably reuse a lot of existing textures.

  9. First, I am very glad I saw your stream Cobaltwolf, I don't think I would have tried out this mod without seeing the stream first. I think the Karrot and MOL parts would be fun to see, and as a suggestion, rather than Saturn parts (if you ever get there), something unique might be the large diameter Titan parts (the 15 or 16 foot diameter core Titan proposals would have pushed the payload above the Saturn IB lift capacity). Just for reference, here is the NTRS document that I linked to in the chat yesterday (the one that has the baby Centaur parts).
