My wife took a frozen chicken and a frozen roast beef out of the freezer and put them in the fridge to thaw for a couple days. She forgot to put them in a bowl. They were wrapped in clingwrap…. They were on the top shelf… What a bloody mess they made, literally… My wife was busy getting her products ready to take to the local market, so guess who started pulling everything out of the fridge and wiping it all down? But wait, there’s more! Go to put the soggy egg carton in the compost bin under the sink: nope, it’s overflowing So take that to the compost bin outside, well….. Two weeks ago, nobody found the large bin liners, so they just threw small bags in the bin any old way. It got collected, and (kids? wife?) kept tossing bags in. So I open it to find a maggoty mess, and the reek almost made me puke Luckily I have two compost bins, as the first one got somewhat squished by the truck, so the lid doesn’t close properly. Not good for compost, but still usable for yard waste Put a liner in there, dump the mess into it, use a car ice scraper to scrape the goop and bones off the bottom and dump that in (holding my breath the whole time) and finally hose the last of the mess and maggots out into the storm drain Then I can go back to cleaning the fridge…. Okay, all done, putting stuff back in and…. drop a container of whey (from yogurt-making) and goooosh, all over the floor and cabinet… *hangs head* Soaked that up with dish towels, a quick wet mop with the Norwex mop, and now I can just kick back at the market in my new Canucks jersey Nice day, high cloud layer, not too hor, much better afternoon than morning…

I’m confused. I thought you were in the northern hemisphere, and Orion (the constellation containing Betelgeuse) is a winter constellation? Or are you not wanting to get cooked by the blast of gamma rays and other radiation?? A bigger threat is probably the wave of cosmic radiation (heavy atomic nuclei) tharwill be following at subluminal speeds, but I’m not a cosmologist…

totm nov 2023 SpaceX Discussion Thread
StrandedonEarth replied to Skylon's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I know there is essentially no chance of this happening, but I can’t help but wonder how big of a crew it would take (and how much of an infrastructure investment) to station a booster or three and a deoneship at Kourou for GEO-bound launches… They could probably slap an FH booster nose cone on the boosters and fly them there… -

Based on yesterday, possibly both, making the most of it while they have the closures and alerts in place -
How high could you pump steam?
StrandedonEarth replied to farmerben's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I get what you’re saying, but what about having the steam at the base being at 500-600K (or hotter) and at 2-3atm of pressure, using the pressure to force the rise, and somewhat constrained by the “windsock” to reduce expansion cooling? Start with enough heat to not have to add heat? Boil the oceans, of course! As for the OP, water vapor is a greenhouse gas, balanced by the albedo of clouds. Injecting vapor where the humidity is zero will not produce clouds until the relative humidity reaches 100 percent over a wide enough area, or it will disperse and all it will do is add to the greenhouse effect. So that means a LOT of water (and a LOT of energy) for the effect you’re seeking -
Good movie, good book. Loved all the pop culture references...

What have you been playing recently? (Other than KSP)

That's why it's so warm in here! -
Delta-v has now been defined. But it depends on a few things. Delta-v is a function of mass, Isp and mass fraction (ratio of propellant mass to total mass) as per the Rocket Equation . So any increase in dry mass will reduce the available dV, which is why designers strive to minimize dry mass. Isp is generally fixed once the propellants are chosen and the engine is built, but can still vary depending on ambient pressure and engine performance (malfunctions, ;leaks, etc). Which leads to the "tyranny of the rocket equation:" adding more propellants doesn't add much more dV, because those propellants also need to be accelerated. Which is why staging became a thing, to drop the extra mass of large tanks and the heavy, high-thrust engines required to accelerate enormous quantities of propellants..

But anyways, back to the 80s...

There have been many Patty Gurdy clips floating around this forum, and the instrument is the Hurdy-Gurdy. I had never seen it before either. It appears to be what you get when you cross a violin with a keyboard, or maybe accordion. E: I've introduced someone else to The Gurdy. My job is done here....

Good choice, especially when it inspires such smokin versions like this.....

Wife says: I say: The album was actually released November 30, 1979, ,which positions it to hit its heyday in the 80s...
