Is there any benefit to launching multiple flights at once in career?
G'th replied to Ant P's topic in KSP1 Discussion
In stock career? Not necessarily unless you're dealing with close together transfer windows and don't want to wait for the next one for either transfer. However, with mods, running multiple missions at once becomes much more appealing as time becomes more valuable. Kerbal Construction Time, StateFunding, Life Support mods, and even the wide variety of contracts available via Contract Configurator all help make time something you don't want to waste, and as such running single missions at a time becomes less and less desirable the farther you get into the tech tree. -
Thats what I have.

Will do once I get home.
-
Yes. Definitely do get some aircraft expansions to go along with it though. Otherwise in the early game career you'll just be grinding up until you can start to get into orbit with more significant payloads.

I think the movie just plain left out the vehicles that brought all of this stuff down to the surface.

Well yeah, that was the joke xD

So, basically, I want to try and add a texture switch module to the parts in this mod: http://www.curse.com/ksp-mods/kerbal/222813-flag-decals-v2-3 The point being so I can use these decals as separate decals from what my misson flag is. I was already able to sort of do this by essentially creating a new part for each flag I wanted to use and just reusing the assets, replacing the flag texture. This obviously ends up with a large amount of extra parts. However, my attempts using Firespitter's and Interstellars modules for this have been less than successful. And I think its because I either need to go in and do something with the models themselves or because I need information from the model that obviously I can't access. Some help with getting this to work would be much, much appreciated. Note: I do know that there is another mod that actually does this, however, the models in that particular mod aren't as useful as these are (because these scale up and down a lot better) and actually end up causing the decals to not look near as good.

Why do people make so many NASA conspiracy Theories?
G'th replied to fredinno's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Probably a combination of mental illness, poor education (in the home and out), and a simple yet reasonable mistrust of any government entity. Personally growing up I always knew that we really did land on the Moon, though I always conceded that if NASA did fake something, it was probably just the initial landings, as that was only part of the "theory" that could have made sense despite the physical evidence. Either way though disregarding all physical evidence, it still doesn't make much sense. If NASA faked the landings, it begs the question of why the Soviets didn't eventually do so as well, and more over why they didn't bother blowing the whistle on NASA for it. There's no way we could have faked the landings and not have the Russians eventually figure it out. And even if they for some reason didn't want to spill the beans to the world, it still begs the question of why they didn't eventually fake their own landings. If we faked ours, its not like we could call them out for faking theirs. -
Unfortunately 50km up and a difference in inclination of 25* is too much for a Kerbal to manage. Even with an EVA-X as far as I've been able to tell. But alas, the save has gone the way of the dodo anyway, so we'll never know

^ Well if my Orion's had survived the reactor explosion I could have probably scavenged from them the fuel necessary to enable a propulsive landing (my DV did have the capability, but only because I used an overkill retrofire system. Fully fueled my DV could land and return to orbit) but it'd still require finding a power supply somewhere and getting the DV itself stabilized. The only available power supply would have required somehow rendezvousing with the backup ascent vehicle in orbit (which is 50km higher and slightly more eliptical) to steal one of its RTG's, or somehow landing and using the AV already landed Not with Persistent Rotation I can't.

(To mods, I know this technically could fall under one of the general topics, but I think my grief in this situation requires more than a post to be lost in a sea of other posts ) So, my mission to Duna, my first manned landing on another planet, has failed miserably. Due to what I call "accidental high-energy re-docking" my Duna transfer ship Inspiration was practically destroyed, with the crew of 6 being stranded in their descent vehicle without parachutes and no way to get home or otherwise go anywhere. What happened is that after I transferred the crew into the descent vehicle and undocked from the main ship, I accidentally hit the full throttle button before I would get any separation via RCS. So my descent vehicle slammed back into my ship and what followed was essentially as if the descent vehicle was purposely seeking out all the parts of my transfer ship that could have enabled the kerbals to be saved. It quite literally slammed into the transfer vehicle (causing the whole craft to spin) and started flying back towards the engine section taking every radiator and solar panel with it, along with the remaining half of the life support supplies. It was quite funny, because the very high spin coupled with some other bits of debris made it so not a single panel or radiator survived, despite being on opposite sides of the ship. The last panel on the opposite side of where the descent vehicle started actually got slammed into it at the last second. And alas, because the ship lost its panels, its nuclear reactor is thus doomed to explode and likely take most of the rest of the ship with it. Meanwhile, the descent vehicle along with the crew are in an uncontrollable tumble, as its power supply was destroyed among other things. Not even my level 2 pilot + RCS was able to actually stabilize it. The collision produced one heck of a debris field though. So, long story short, I didn't go to Duna today I probably won't attempt to go again on this save, as I've been itching to actually play career mode using some new mods I've been looking at. So once I'm able to I'll probably try on a new save, and likely using a more streamlined approach to getting there. But, here's a couple of pics of the debris field for your enjoyment

I really like their mechanical mice.

Even as someone who understands whats going on there even I think that it looks weird. XD It is an interesting design though, and one I might have to try in KSP

Today I learned that Taco Bell is the perfect medium of cheap and quantity in my area when it comes to fast food. The same $12 can either not fill me up at McDonalds, not give me variety at the local pizza place, or give me a nice pile of varied stuff at Taco Bell.

Wow I"m swooning. Its kind of awesome that a mod just starts getting talked about again one day and the next its back up and fully compatible and its getting better than ever. But, something I think would be cool if possible is if you could take the Mission patches up on the walls there and make them map to a folder with a bunch of flag sized textures. Essentially so you could take your own flags and put them in there and have them show up on the wall.

Only fuel cell I know of that utilizes hydrogen in any mod atm is the one from Universal storage, though its not procedural but it is fully compatible with TAC.

I'd say load up OPM and go explore the outer planets. OPM should basically be stock anyway so it'd definitely be interesting.

The thing about the Shuttle C, while neat, is that it was only a solution to the problem of keeping the Shuttle program going. Because at this point, you may as well just design a regular rocket and design it's stages to be recovered, ala the Inline version of the Shuttle C. By keeping the basic Orbiter-ET-Boosters stack you're really overengineering something that can be done far simpler. Of course, in KSP that doesn't necessarily matter, but in the same amount of time you'd spend getting the Shuttle C to work in-game, you could have designed an equally funds saving rocket and probably launched it a couple of times. If not an even cheaper one.

While I definitely understand the whole aversion to the whole "giant windows in space" bit (presuming that's what you're talking about) I have to admit I don't think its really that outlandish nowadays. After all, the Cupola exists and the window space on that isn't that much less than the Rover has. As for the canvas, well, the movie did take liberties when it came to its space habitats. I mean, no way is the inside of the either habitats (those on the surface or the Hermes) are going to be that clean cut and Trek-like.

RemoteTech Satellites
G'th replied to thatguywiththejk's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
What I've been doing for my mission to Duna, though its probably not the most efficient in terms of active flight numbers, is to have the basic 3-sat constellation going in geosynchronous, with omni-antennas for anything in the Kerbin System. (I actually modded myself in a modded Omni that was basically twice the weight and twice the power draw of the most powerful one currently, so that I could have it reach the outskirts of the Kerbin system) Then, I create polar satellites in very, very high orbits that I use to connect to anything outside of the Omni's range. Essentially by doing that it allows me to have a sattelite that's always connected to one of the geosync'd sats but also allows almost constant connection with anything anywhere in the rest of the solar system. So with what I'm doing in the Duna system, the only time I lose connection is either when Kerbin or Duna blocks the connection (which typically isn't an issue as I have a sat constellation going on Duna as well as a backup sat in Kerbin orbit that's nearly always on the opposite side of my main polar sat) or when the sun does, which I haven't actually run into yet. Something I've noticed is that the only reliable way to keep a connection is to keep direct connections going, with dishes on both my target and my Kerbin sats pointed at each other. With Omni's, even in the Kerbin system, sometimes I find the connection drops or I just plain get one even though I should be. -
I wouldn't say that. I'd say its more of a case of wanting more when there isn't any more to get. And I can say that from personal experience. Morrowind is the only other game other than KSP that I've put 2000+ hours into (ACtually put somewhere in the area of 4500 hours into it) and much like KSP I have not actually done everything there is to do in that game. However, you take one of Morrowin's successors, Skyrim, where I've put may be 500 hours into the game and I've quite literally done everything there is to do multiple times over. All 3 games have obviously paid for themselves entertainment wise a hundred times over, but the fact that Skyrim gave me less entertainment than a game that came before it by the same company does say quite a bit about what could have been done with that game content wise. But of course I'm not about to start that whole discussion so we'll leave the example at that. As far as KSP goes, its great, but that doesn't change that there are parts of the game that really are unfinished or at best just not fully realized. Science, which does comprise the bulk of "stuff" to do once we go to a place, is one of those parts. Bring science on par with the other parts of the game would do wonders for everybody, including us people that have put over 4.5 months of straight play time into the game. But thats not to say I'm bored with the game, mind you. Like I said, I'm only just starting to go interplanetary so I haven't quite run out of things to do.
-
Its a bit of a catch 22 though. Where having so many hours possible in a game is great, it also means that for the people that end up getting bored after such and such amount of hours we still want to play but really can't because the interest gets lost when theres no more content to keep you going. I personally, after 2000+ hours am only just starting to go interplanetary but even I completely agree with the idea that there should be more to do once you go places. I feel the game should really expand past just the VAB/SPH, if nothing else to at least allow the players who would rather fly than build to have more to do without having to just fake it. Because after all, if we're just gonna fake it, why bother with the game at all? Its more or less the same argument you would see in the RPG world where the debate is player skill versus character skill, and all those little bits and bobs that enhance roleplaying even if they don't necessarily add to the actual gameplay. Sure we can pretend that we're a Paladin instead of a basic Warrior even though the game doesn't differentiate, but that isn't the point of roleplaying.
