Spacecraft Exchange Recommended Starter Space Program Craft

Was wondering if we could poll various best known craft designs for different categories to make shopping for a craft or idea easier for newcomers to begin their space program or reverse engineering journeys.

Feasible for .90 package? Stock only?

What crafts do you recommend for new players looking to complete career or reverse engineer designs:

Rovers

Space Station Packages

Well I got to thinking, what are people searching for when looking for a craft to download?

'best' is far too arbitrary a yard stick to make a fair selection process..

If you want us to vote your shuttle as the 'best' just ask.

What you will have with this is effectively a competition. People will vote for their favourite craft and as such this should be in challenges. This may upset a few people if their craft isn't chosen.

No, what im looking for is really something more space program rounded. A package, a list of the best known craft designs for obvious categories such a launchers, sstos, station and base packages...that a newcomer can easily find in a list to download and try out crafts so as to get their space program up and quickly running.

In short I want to know what you think are craft people have designed that meet the most basic of categories required for a successful space program. Your own craft may be submitted or not but the idea is to recommend others. So even if you didn't participate, your craft could still be recommended.

A package, a list of the best known craft designs for obvious categories such a launchers, sstos, station and base packages...that a newcomer can easily find in a list to download and try out crafts so as to get their space program up and quickly running.

In short I want to know what you think are craft people have designed that meet the most basic of categories required for a successful space program. Your own craft may be submitted or not but the idea is to recommend others. So even if you didn't participate, your craft could still be recommended.

I still think its a bad idea. You will be spammed by people putting their own craft forward. As well as this most people will put forward the names we all know on this forum. Yourself, katateochi, Mulbin, GusTurbo, sgt_flyer, Rune, Majorjim ect ect..

We, as forum veterans know who makes the most pleasing, imaginative, creative, complex craft. Why don't you just list those?

And isn't there already a master builders list somewhere based on thread replies?

Arbitrary preferences? I don't know per se and maybe the whole idea is as bad as best recommended mods for basic gameplay...but I wonder if we as a community can come up with something basic for new players to try out and see and reversr engineer ideas in order to stand on the shoulders of giants...perhaps even manking better craft in the process.

This is coming from the general idea that spawned the Showcase Master list. This idea however focuses on specific craft recommendations and referrals. Not as expansive as previous craft repositories, but more narrow showcasing what we as a community generally agree are great crafts (With available download links). Basically taking the Rep Worthy thread idea and opening it up to submitting other ppls crafts and requiring a download and narrowing the field to like the top 10 for each category.

I like the idea. I think to do it right, we would have to have some good rules in place. One rule might be that you can only submit another person's design, and not your own. I think for each category, you could have a submission thread open for a week, then a voting thread open for another week. Or something like that. It would be an ongoing series, rather than all-at-once, and I think it would help bring attention to the great designs around here. Then maybe have a stickied thread that catalogs the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place craft for each category, adding to the thread as the categories are voted on. I think this approach would be the least divisive. Also, maybe make a provision for a craft designer to veto the nomination of their craft from the running.

Great ideas Gus. Yea, I was just wondering what everyone's opinion was on the best of this or that out there. I mean, its what led me to build off the backs of others to create awesome crafts of my own. I mean, if I could see the top 3 apollo style launchers, I might be able to reverse engineer and come up with one with the best of all worlds... sort of like what I did with the nasa shuttles I found. It's all in the name of finding the best craft in order to raise the bar.

Also I don't want to run it lest my own impartiality be called into question (and I already manage the behmouth that is the Showcase Master thread). But if I can pass the idea to someone else to run, that would be awesome!

Top 3-10 crafts in each practical spacecraft category would be ideal, and keep the list updated every 3-6 months. Even better if data from KerbalX, curse, reddit, and other forums could be included and collected and published so as to give a pretty large scope covering most craft in existence. Just not sure how to go about it. I mean, I could ask you guys:

what is your favorite apollo launcher?

what is your favorite VTOL SSTO?

what is your favorite runway SSTO?

what is your favorite satellite launcher?

what is your favorite long range launcher?

what is your favorite planetary lander?

what is your favorite space station core or station package?

what is your favorite Constellation style mission package?

what is your favorite Russian style Mun mission package?

etc...

I also like the idea of not submitting your own craft.

Hey inigma,

It's a great idea to have a "starter pack" for new players, showing to newcomers what can be done with the editor.

However I ain't sure if those craft need to be labelled "best craft on the forum" for the pack to be worth downloading, and also this would assume you can judge them all perfectly partially, understand each craft perfectly, which is kind of impossible

Some craft actually don't make any sense and are still great you know!

I think the trick is to simply name it "starter craft pack" and not "award craft pack" and include the craft that you think are the best.

It would be cool to have a sort of "starter pack." Easy-to-fly, relatively low part count ships from each category. (Stuff like Rune's White Dart Series or Speeding Mullet's Micro Shuttle.) Then something more like a "Showcase Pack," just to show off some of the stuff that the community builds. (Stuff like zekes' shuttle, inigma's shuttle and assorted bits, Rune's Eagle, Overfloater's planes, maybe Wanderfound's gigantic collection, Rune's Base-In-A-Box, that sort of thing.)
