Ore drilling/fuel refining in 1.0 : a built-in cheat, or not a cheat?

who cares about efficiency when I can just timewarp and let them get .0001 fuel for 6 years?

Time is a resource, and while you can time warp, heat management and efficiency are very crucial in making a profitable resource operation. Hot engines will slow down even further and lack of electricity will shut down the operation. So don't discount those.

Heat management will matter while using the rocket but while its sitting there mining? I'll just slap on timewarp and let it crawl life support isnt a thing so they can stay there for 20 years for all I care.

Except in career, time warping 20 years without doing other things will kill your rep. And also, you have to wait that much longer to get science back, thus hurting your career more.

So yes, it's a bit relevant ;)

Tho I totally get that it may not be your cup of tea, it is a far cry from 'cheating'. And I'm pretty happy with how the balance worked out.

RoverDude, i have a question: Will radiator parts from Interstellar and Nertea mods work with stock heat?
Neither will do so "out of the box", they'll have to be adjusted to do so.

Reputaton decays over time?

That changes a lot of things.

Withot reputation decay having to wait for science isn't that bad. (especially because by the time you are using ISRU science probably isn't a large problem, unless the science from biome grinding has been nerfed a lot.)

Wow, Scott was getting massive amounts of ore from an asteroid. he filled his ore container with 1 drill and on no time acceleration in just under 2 minutes. Capturing and redirecting asteroids is really gonna be a thing....

Design choice. Given the difficulty of getting an asteroid in the first place, and the fact that they have a limited capacity, they are easier to get ore from. He may have also hit a particularly nice one (no idea as he had no scanner with him) Also - the streamers have uniformly been landing on really lousy resource spots.

Well the ISRUs will make capturing asteroids easier now though by quite a margin. Not trivial, but you don't need to bring deltaV to capture it, you can just in situ mine it now. It's not really bugging me since i'm not a fan of asteroids anyway - but i can understand if somebody is not happy with that.

Might be practical, now if you get the stupid put an class D asteroid in Eve orbit you could use it to your benefit.

He forgot the scanner, was not able to find how much ore was in the asteroid

Not sure why folks would not be happy with that - the challenge is still both retrieving it, and maneuvering it. Tho now the question is whether or not lugging the ISRU gear is worth it vs a regular redirect. But then everyone gets to play with this Monday anyway :)

In a real life asteroid redirect mission, ISRU seems like a good choice for doing so. Especially if its a carbonaceous type asteroid (hydrocarbons etc)

Yes. In a real life asteroid mission they won't refill their tanks in 6 minutes though, so that's kind of a moot point. To me, KSP is still a game, with no real connection to reality. Especially considering the crafts i build. :P

Ohh, I wasn't unhappy about it. I was just posting a new bit of info I have observed. I for one am really excited about the whole resource thing. It gives me perfect excuse to set up large bases in different parts of the solar system for refuelling. I think it will definitely be more fun than just bringing your fuel on all trips, or just trucking large fuel tanks around the solar system.
