I love the fairings!

I think whoever is responsible for the fairings in 1.0.2 is to be profoundly congratulated. This feature is really slick, and the GUI implementation is pure eye-candy. I've been sitting here just waving the mouse around in front of the fairings to reveal the contents. Back and forth back and forth over and over for probably 15 minutes, it's quite hypnotic and, in the true sense of the word, awesome. Beautifully done.

And they make getting funny shaped stuff into orbit a heck of a whole bunch easier I can tell you.

B-but....they split apart like a frag grenade :(

Yeah, that's one thing I'm not to fond of, but I'm happy with the overall system. A few weeks here and there will be needed. They introduced a great deal of things in a small time.

same here, Overall I'm happy with em, they just need to be tweaked a bit.

I love them as well. Finally my spacecraft look like spacecraft and not flying oil rigs....at least until they get into deep space where then they magically transform in a puff of glitter into a proper zero G vacuum design.

Yes...that was a backhanded complaint about the fragmenting effect, but really, I could live with it, I just would prefer something else.

The fragmented separation effect is not a concern for me at all. What's worrisome is that they seem to be tuned poorly so that in many cases you're better off not using them. Between their high mass and high drag (for fairings, anyway) they can impede a launch instead of facilitating it. However, I agree the UI is pretty darn slick, and with a bit of rebalance they will be an excellent addition to the game.

Real fairings use pyrotechnic charges to break open don't they? So yeah they are a bit like grenades.

No, they are not anything like grenades. Grenades burst into schrapnels. Fairings open into two or four identical pieces.

KSP stock fairings are pretty much like a bad grenade. Not even overheated gas tanks explode like that.

Also, they have zero mass which is not how it's supposed to be.

They GUI for creating them is fine...

I beg to differ. The text color-change indicating whether or not the place you are trying to click would result in an obstructed fairing or not caused me lots of problems (since I'm colorblind).

Sorry about that. Most people who aren't RG colorblind completely ignore those who are.

In fine old KSP tradition, there was absolutely no instruction given on how to use the fairings. The only hint for why clicking sometimes worked and sometimes didn't was the color change of the text. It would have really sucked to have not been able to have even that hint.

I guess I have to point out that you are showing us an artist's conception. I don't dispute the truth of your post, but a sketch like that isn't exactly evidence.

I actually quite like the construction mechanics for the new fairings. It's a good balance between Procedural Parts and something like KW Rocketry that forces you to use very specific shell shapes and sizes. Now that the mass problem is fixed, the only real annoyance is the separation animation, but it's not a huge deal. I actually haven't had trouble making interstage adapters with them. Here's a rocket I made that has an interstage fairing for sleekness as well as an Orion-style fairing for the command pod, with the launch escape system jutting out:

Try making an interstage that doesn't decouple but still leaves the top end open so stuff can be removed from it. Let me know how you do.
