Mercury-Redstone

Mercury-Redstone was designed to be a balistic missile. It was then repurposed as an expandeble launch vehicle. It was used to launch Alan Shepard. On a 15 minute mission in his mercury capsule.

Hello you steely eyed missile men.

Can we submit proposed spacecraft? If so I will offer up my altair lander with a version of my Ares V launcher and my as yet unfinished Orion and Ares 1. They will be part of the constellation thing I'm making but I foresee a delay in releasing the landers with launchers.

Submitting my Shuttle for your consideration :)

The US Space Shuttle

The US Space Shuttle really needs no introduction. First launched on April 12th 1981, it served as the US's manned launch vehicle until its retirement in 2011. In that time it flew 135 flights, carried 833 astronauts into space, and launched some of humanity's most awe-inspiring scientific instruments, including the Hubble Space Telescope and the International Space Station. Despite its flaws and small number of tragic accidents, the Space Shuttle will surely be remembered as one of the most influential space vehicles of the early space age.

Shuttle-C Concept

NASA examined a number of ways to extend the capability they had developed with the Shuttle. One of the most analyzed variations was to make a cargo-only version known as Shuttle-C. It was basically a Shuttle orbiter stripped down to only the propulsion system and the cargo bay. By removing the crew cabin, life support, and reusability capability, it was intended that this would allow reuse of Shuttle technology into a cheap to develop heavy-lift launcher. This idea came and went a number of times, and the final variation that got closest to being produced was the "Shuttle-Derived Heavy Lift Launch Vehicle" in 2009. Ultimately all Shuttle derived ideas were scrapped as the fleet was retired.

This is a recreation of the original Shuttle-C concept.

Shuttle Aft Cargo Carrier

Another way that NASA sought to maximize the Shuttle's capabilities was with the Aft Cargo Carrier. This concept came about due to fact that since the external tank was essentially already carried up to orbit by the Shuttle every launch, why not actually bring a little extra up with it? This was briefly studied and proposed in the Shuttle's heyday pre-Challenger, but has been largely forgotten since then.

I realise that this probably isn't the place for this, but among other things, I have vague recollections of Columbia's launch in 1981. I was but 4 years old at the time, and I remember that the external tank was painted white-- unlike all launches after that one. I learned much later that the tanks were left unpainted subsequently to save weight. Much more recently, I was dusappointed inbthat no sumiliar system was slated to replace the Shuttle. I am glad, however, that the system continues in KSP. Again, love the work shown here.

Yup, the first two launches were the only ones with the tank painted white. Every pound saved on the external tank was an extra pound the shuttle could bring to orbit, so it was one of the places NASA did the most weight reductions on.

Wish I was old enough to remember the first launches =)

Falcon 1

Falcon 1 was the first SpaceX launch vehicle to reach orbit. Although it was plagued by failures, it succeeded in carrying the RazakSat payload to orbit on flight 4. This file contains Falcon 1 Flight 4 with RazakSat.

I have an sls. link to it in my sig.

I'd love to add that, but I need a picture and a description, :)

I'm working on Delta, Delta 2, and Delta 3 and maybe an Atlas V, i'm almost done with the Delta 3, I'll try and get the download tomorrow. I've given a payload like the Galaxy 10 satellite on the Delta 3 (which sadly failed to reach orbit)

Looks good, I'm looking forward to that!

That's sad, I hate it when that happens, if you are able to get it to work, please post it :)

Welp, trying to revive it to work was a complete failure - Then again, it was 400 parts and was a little too overpowered, so I decided to start again. Still a WIP, but I'd like your opinion on it :)

Presenting: The much smaller, and more pleasant-looking Delta IV Heavy! Lawsuits and Patents pending.

It has too much Delta-V to boot, with enough power for an escape trajectory out of Kerbin - Something I still have to fix. It still doesn't have a payload decoupler (and RTGs!). See it finished very, very soon. :)

I'll add a description and Craft file soon if this is successsful.

Tell me what you guys think! I'm open to suggestions. :)

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
