Cutting down early game science grind

Recommended Posts

Tricky question, and ultimately highly subjective.

I already played most of the science game back in 0.23.5, during my last serious playthrough. I am still interested, however, in playing Career and having to collect science and funds (which I hadn't dealt with before) since it gives me purpose beyond roleplaying.

Now, the problem is the lack of parts and the limited amount of things you can do in the early game. It feels a bit like a grind to get past that, and I'd like to ask for opinions to streamline that stage as I've already gone through it once. What are your suggestions? Is lowering science costs a good idea, or is it better to edit my savegame to give myself a lump sum of science points to unlock an early chunk of the tech tree? It's not my intention to diminish the role of science gathering past the early game.

I'm not interested in part mods as I prefer the stock selection, by the way. I suppose I mainly want to avoid having to shake all the science out of Kerbin's surface just to unlock a decent amount of parts and actually get on with the space program. Ideally, someone could make a mod which would automatically a) mark all of Kerbin's surface experiments as completed, and B) total up all that science and give it to the player when the game starts.

But anyway, let's hear your thoughts, fellow kerbonauts!

When creating a new career you can set the difficulty. Aside from the regular Easy/Normal/Hard settings you can also make custom settings.

One of the things you can do is set how much money/science/reputation you begin the game with. If you dislike the early game science grind you may want to give yourself a moderate amount. Alternately you can increase the science awarded by contracts. Or some combination of the two.

Well, if you won't do mods, then get used to the grind. Even if you do Easy Mode and get 200% of the normal amount of science. If you don't want to grind, then get DMagic Orbital science, which not only provides scads of new instruments to gain more science with, but also has contracts that pay you a lot to use those instruments.

In 1.x, pretty much all science rewards have been removed from stock contracts. Gone is the realistic R&D-type science of testing parts, so there's nothing for it but the "Great Blueprint Scavenger Hunt" of looking for plans for new parts in all the biomes of Mun and Minmus. And you need way more science than previously due to there now being more nodes on the tree, and all the 2.5m parts spread over more nodes to get them all.

The only slight consolation in this dreary landscape is that the Mobile Science Lab can now create science. But you have to stock it with high level scientists, and also with as much data as possible gathered by conventional means, and then wait a long amount of game time. You end up with about 5x the science you would have from a single landing. So you CAN warp your way into science using it without repetitive Mun landings on different biomes. However, the rub here is that to keep this from taking eons of gametime, you need high-level scientists. The highest level you can get within the Kerbin system is 2---you can't even get 3rd level without leaving Kerbin's SOI briefly. So there's a limit there to start with, and of course during all this gametime it takes to cook the data in the lab, interplanetary transfer windows go by unused.

If you need some early science, you can grab a lot just around the KSC. Every building and sub-building is its own biome, so a jet powered car with a bunch of experiments stuck to it can gather a lot of science quite quickly. Apart from that, I also use the Sounding Rockets mod, which adds four additional experiments that are unlocked in the early game, as well as some cool little 0.35 meter rocket parts.

Well, I pulled out my mechanical keyboard for this one! Normally I'd take more time to make my argument here but hopefully this is just some food for thought. The first three nodes of the tech tree are token nodes, you are going to unlock them because you either need those pieces or the ones behind them to get the science you need to unlock the parts you want. That makes the tech tree particularly wasteful, and unlike something like Civilization, it's not like we're taking a particularly novel path. The early nodes are especially unrelated and have little to do with what lies beyond themâ€â€how parachutes lead to thermometers or antenna is anyone's guess! And the later nodes, while they do follow a path of expanding your options or providing larger pieces, it doesn't exactly scream freedom. If the first thing you want to research is a titanic SRB, why do you have to research engines and fuel tanks you don't care about first?

So here's sort of how I look at it, I've started to think the issue with unlocks is the price of the nodes themselves. Imagine, for example, every node costs 25 science to unlock. As things are right now, if I want to invest in planes I have to spend quite a lot of time in space and on other planets to achieve the science I need for my goal. However, in order to get the science from those other places I have to invest in unrelated areas of the tech tree. So what happens is I can either abandon my dreams and take the 'most ideal path' through the tech tree, or I can deal with the grind. The same could be said for anything, whether it be solar panels, ladders, or 3m engines. You have to grind through nodes you don't care about, wasting science you don't want to use, to perform missions you may not particularly care about to buy parts you need to gather more science to finally win a war of attrition and get to the things you care about. At that point I'm not really managing my own program anymore, I'm being stonewalled. So, tone down the science rewards across the galaxy (after all, why is a rock on Pol so much more scientifically valuable than a rock from Duna?) and stabilize the costs of each node. Let the player go as far down a path as they want, rather than arbitrarily holding back progress. In search of new science we WILL go to other places, we just shouldn't be force to prioritize the place because where we want to go isn't valuable enough.

Really, all the current system encourages you to do is to ignore what you want to do and strike out as far and as fast as possible in hopes of a reasonable pay day. And honestly, that's kind of weak for a game about creativity. I think it's because career mode has been misinterpreted as beginner friendly, start with a few pieces and work your way up. But what sense does that make to a new player? After all, in creative you have all the pieces and no limitations or penalties, that's the best place to wrap your head around what the heck everything does. In career we're forced to put up a token launch or trawl the KSC for scraps instead of building rockets, which may be fine for a veteran but how does that expand a beginner's approach? Does that help them get to space or does it teach them to grind for science? When you don't know how to make it into orbit, a limit on their options to contend with a budget and reputation is anything but helpful. It's silly and misguided, and it leads to ideas like 'launch a rocket straight up, watch it fall, unlock another part and do it again.' Boring. I want to try to figure out how to test a decoupler and parachute in the same mission I rescue a stranded Kerbal from orbit and place a satellite on a collision course with the sun. That's the stuff of players with hundreds of hours, a new player just wants to land on the Mun.

If you throw out the newbie mistakes of career, the grind for science can still exist as a gatekeeper and motivator. It can still be a metric of progress but without stifling progress arbitrarily so the player can run a few token 'training' missions. Searching the KSC for every bit of science should be a mark of dedication, interest and ingenuity, not a requirement for people who are interested in Eve. While the token nodes and flights will always exist to some extent, the idea is to cut them down later in the tree so once the player does them they can get started on what really interests them.

Thank you for your thoughts, guys. But to ask a more precise question: has anyone calculated just how much science Kerbin's surface is worth, taking all the non-space (also excluding upper atmosphere) biomes into account? If someone could figure (or has already figured) it out, I could give myself that much science when the game starts and safely skip that side of early gathering, which is unworthy of a space program as it is.

Kerbin surface science does at least offer a small compensation in the case of failed launches, though the current version does provide far too much incentive to go gather heaps of it.

The best advice I can give on increasing the rate you get science without mods or free starter science points is to use Bob when possible rather than Jeb. The scientists new reset ability makes an immense difference.

Abused to its max its technically possible to get a Mun landing on your fourth launch on hard, with only the initial flea launch not going into space (while grabbing only around 30 science from Kerbin).

But to ask a more precise question: has anyone calculated just how much science Kerbin's surface is worth, taking all the non-spaaace (also excluding upper atmosphere) biomes into account? If someone could figure (or has already figured) it out, I could give myself that much science when the game starts and safely skip that side of early gathering, which is unworthy of a spaaace program as it is.

Not to promote myself, but if you can handle perl I made a script that should report everything for you: parseScience.pl. Ignoring asteroids, there's something like 500 each for Landed and Splashed and around 300 for FlyingLow and FlyingHigh, give or take a few dozen. And that's not even counting the KSC "biomes," although it IS for every science experiment known to Kerbalkind.

Different folks have different takes on things-- for example, I don't find the science to be grindy (for me the funds to upgrade buildings are more of a grind). YMMV. I hated the old science-spamming contracts, and love what they've done in 1.0.x.

If you don't like the science grind mid-game, you can always use the administration building strategy that trades funds for science.

In the early game, I generally don't bother trying to milk every Kerbin surface biome-- the science points are just too low. Rather, make sure to milk each part of your trajectory. Launchpad. Flying. Upper atmosphere. Low space. High space. Do that, and it adds up pretty quick to power through the first few science nodes. Once you unlock EVA, a single orbit can net you a ton of "space over ___" science points.

Snark, you realize that's sort of a weak argument, right? Everyone is going to have a different take on it isn't a reason for or against anything. So let's look at this a different way, if you want to build rockets, the game is tuned for you to do just that because all the science is beyond Kerbin's atmosphere. The issue with that is that if you happen to be someone who enjoys building and flying planes, you have to use a lot of science building rockets to go to other bodies in order to do science to unlock the parts to go to other bodies, so you can gather science to unlock parts for planes. The same can really be said for anything, if you want a retractable ladder, why are you forced to unlock solar panels first? If the emphasis is on player design, this is a part where it doesn't really work out that well. The parts ARE categorized into a loose idea of technical achievement, but at the same time the major gatekeeper of progress isn't science, it's exactly what you said, funds. After all, later parts do make certain voyages easier, but a 30 part limit is what keeps you from going to Duna with a starter kit. Even if you do have enough pieces, the launch pad might not support your rocket.

So you are right, funds are more of a restriction on your progress than science, since most competent players can pretty much make it anywhere with unlimited resources even if they only have a handful of parts. That lends support directly to my point about the tech nodes, they hold back your technological progress for not particularly useful reason. Just as some players don't want to do any Kerbin science, some players like myself really enjoy doing science on Kerbin and visiting each of the biomes and locations to perform contracts and independent research. Hell, I love building craft to go and retrieve splashed down rockets!

That being the case, the nodes arbitrarily limit your progress down a path, even though the building upgrades already perform a similar function. Science is more a measure of having gone and done things than a measure of the value of the things done, and that being said, as an unlock currency, it seems many destinations are over-valued when they simply represent progress in general for the sole purpose of conflating progress with higher numbers.

Yes, what can be determined as a grind is subjective.

I still go out and gather the KSC biomes upon a new game start - but instead of just making a jet rover I've been making wierd contraptions to cut back on the boredom. Last night, before even accepting the "launch your first vessel", I obtained all the L45 science nodes by making odd rovers that used only flywheel torque. The first vessel to complete "collect science data from Kerbin" was basically 4 capsules and a couple goos, which was rolled all over KSC with the whole gang of dizzy Kerbals inside.

Doing the same thing every time does get boring. Try something different with your new saves. ;)

Assuming you are playing stock on normal there really shouldn't be much of a grind depending on your skill set.

Your first launch is probably going to be a pod with a bunch of goo canisters and a flea rocket. Get 2 goo samples from each setting (launchpad, flying, landed wherever you landed) as well as crew reports and EVA's that will get you enough tech to launch a rocket to escape the atmosphere at the very least and even orbit if you are skilled enough.

Your next launch should have a science bay and more goo pods and if you can escape the atmosphere you can get a pretty decent amount of science.

Once you finish the escape the atmosphere contract you should have enough funds to upgrade the astronaut complex which will allow you to do EVA anywhere and thus get lots of science.

Your next flight could be orbit with an apo above 250 so you can get high orbit science.

By now you should have a basic probe and the lander can unlocked so instead of sending pilots you can send a scientist and keep resetting the science bay. From there science should be pretty simple, with the mun and minmus alone you can pretty much fill out the whole tech tree with almost no grinding. If you find yourself a couple points short of a certain tech make a simple jet that can scoot around KSC but I didn't really find this necessary except on a couple occasions.

I have been thinking about putting a little guide together to help new players get through the first couple parts of the game up to duna completely stock without grinding, do you think people might like that?

As for "milking every biome" - I did this only on the radio limit, but I didn't find it grindy. I developed an unkerbed mission to Eve, a bunch of tiny landers for every biome. I just tested it over Kerbin first.

For "unrelated nodes you need to unlock" - think of them as the real cost of your desired nodes. It's not that your node costs 300 but you need to unlock an unrelated node for 160 to get access to it. No, your node costs 460. You really want it, it's worth that price to you. You're just getting a small bonus a third of the way through, some more less useful parts.

You can grind or gift yourself the Kerbin science if you want, but there is absolutely no need to. You can reach orbit with minimal tech and no building upgrades; you can reach the Mun and Minmus not long after that. Once you reach Minmus, you can grab as much science as you want.
