What is the point of sigs

Some people seem to use them as an attempt to get people to notice them by making their message-box div container as big as possible.

Other times, it's only a short sentence and a few links, being a bit of self advertising.

So, what is the point of sigs?

They keep people from putting these things into their posts. They also allow some individuality to shine through. I recognize people by their sigs, especially those who use animated gifs as avatars, causing me to block their avatar images

I've had that quote there forever, just another way of identifying myself, like a username or avatar. The links are shameless self-promotion for my first ever tutorial and a challenge I find interesting.

Along the same lines, I find it handy to have the Drawing Board as a handy link in my signature, so that when I recommend it to new players I don't have to copy-paste the link over and over again.

If you want an .gif avatar, you can use this convenient site to resize the gif you want and use the optimize tool to get it below the filesize requirement. It must be no more than 19.5 kb and 64x64 pixels to work on the forums.

I have links to a TV show I find interesting, a pair of modlets I maintain, and something else. I can't remember what.

Actually, you win at animated gif as I've not felt the need to hide yours. Usually it's just the really annoying ones, and for some reason I found that one of the 11th Doctor just... disquieting.

I apologize, but quite literally the only thing I could glean out of that post was that it was directed at me, and even that's a guess based on the fact that I was talking to someone whose name started with "destro".

I use my signature to share quotes that I found humorous as well as provide some self-advertising for my mods and social media. It's a neat way to provide some useful information without having to copy-paste it into every post. I'm not a fan of people asking for reputation in their signatures though, it seems kinda pretentious to me.

I would consider that image to be what I was talking about, not meaning to be offensive just pointing out that it stretches the box solely so other people notice it.

WinkAllKerb's box seems to stretch the same amount, but it also doesn't have that "notice me" aspect. Hard to explain since while I would say your banner is intended to be "notice me" other people's banners that hold the same effect may not be.

And that is why I've completely disabled animated GIFs... come across completely "dancing" pages way too often

That's what I don't really get; the self plugs make sense for people who want others to see their content, but sometimes the content is so well known that listing it seems pointless.

Sometimes it's a message, and yeah I'd say the fairing's message is so well known it's kind of pointless; but we keep it regardless.

The instances where it is akin to a bookmarks page for those who often help others in support also makes sense.

The thing is, we make these sigs; but then never talk about them. I've never really felt compelled to do so, so just curious what others have.

*Yeah, this is kind of whining, if it really bugged me I could just turn them off and I know how*

I love signatures, especially ones with jokes and quotes. The links are great too, I've found more than a couple mods through sigs, as well as a variety of cool stuff, crafts, websites, Youtube channels, etc. They are also very useful for identifying people, and are a great way for people to distinguish themselves. Of course they can be used for signing posts, though I haven't seen anyone do that in a loong time.

What I don't like are signatures that are ~500 pixels tall.. or have sound.

While I'm here, anyone know how to make an image in your sig a link?

I use mine for basically all of the above. Making and writing stuff is more fun if others are finding and enjoying it. I can see why they limit the amount of pictures you can put in the sig, but IMO it would be nice to be alowed a few more.

I initially put the 'quote' in my signature because I saw other people with stuff there when I first joined, and wanted to participate.
