The way I see it is if the kit was left in the box it's a lego collectors item.

But if it's built it's honoring the apollo astronauts for what they've done.

It comes down to which means more to you.

What about the third - that is is an awesome piece with a great story?

There isn't a third.

Look, I wasn't being intentionally inaccurate of my description of you all, the number one destroyer of collectables is "I got bored of it." Only a few parts of a collection ever see the light of day and slowly the collection gets moved into boxes, and later into places that allow the collection to take on damage. By the time it gets rediscovered it looks like this box does down, destroyed, damaged, unappreciated; value having dropped because you didn't "cash out" when the quality was still good. Sometimes it is actually a form of hording than collecting as collections can easily begin to overwhelm the living / working space of an individual.

While I do look down on you all, take my statement seriously. What is going to happen to the box in 6 months? 6 Years? 60 Years? It isn't the type of thing designed to be collected and, eventually, is going to be neglected once again.

The box is a piece of card board, anyone with some sense could reproduce it on blank cardboard easily.

The model on the other hand is a different story, allot of these kits have unique pieces, unless you understand a 3D printer reproducing it isn't easy, therefore the model assembled has more value than the box, in the box it's just plastic blocks.

Guys, please stop fighting. If you want to discuss collecting vs. building (or whatever it is) I suggest starting a thread.

This thread is meant to be a relaxing thread about my enjoyment with this rare lego set.

Speaking of which, it is complete!

So clean and shiny!

And the stickers haven't started peeling off! (Yet...)

The mighty Saturn V rocket.

Hrm. The top of that looks slightly different from the one I have.

The top of my Saturn V doesn't have the cone shaped piece. The cylindrical one is topped by a piece just like the dish is mounted on in the rover picture.

(Also, I misplaced that cylinder at some point. Right now, it's grey instead of white.)

Weird. Wonder why that is?

Some of my my grandfathers best friends worked on the computer module of the Apollo missions and he has a peice of a prototype on his shelf.:) Good find

That is absolutely amazing. I wish I could see some of the actual equipment. :D

Honestly, I don't even know WHAT it is about anymore.

You really ought to take a photo of the saturn V in the same manner as in apollo 13's launch ;p (You know, from the base upwards, keeping a smallish f number to stress just how tall the thing is ;p)

Aww, I want legos now :(

Fit it with a model rocketry 'C' engine and launch it lol.

(Don't take me serious, that surely would ruin the model.)

I've gotten that suggesion many times :D

There is a kit for a large 2 stage Saturn v model rocket though! (Seriously it's like 4 feet tall )

This is too cool. Congrats!

Thanks! :D

I had this kit when I was a kid:

Lego Moon Landing kit from 1975, only a few years after the real thing ;)

(and yes, it was really ugly and looked nothing like a real LM+LRV)

The box is not THAT old then, seeing the Mars Exploration Rover on the back?

And:

EEeuww ... I am a '79 and only know the cute yellow headed figures, so this is ... frightening ... heartless ...

I had this one - one of the last packs I bought.

That box is just too beautiful intact! The fact that it is scuffed up makes it even better, surviving all those years.

You have got to be kidding. Relative to its age that box is in an absolute HORRIBLE condition. It's not from the 1960's, it's from 2003. It's only 12 years old!

For $200 to $300 (depending where you look) you can buy a brand new set.

That is a great story from a Lego collector's perspective. Luckily we are talking about a different situation.
