A short summary of the changes that occurred yesterday :

• Vanamonde is now the Team Leader of the General Forums section, replacing sal_vager
  
• sal_vager remains a Senior Global Moderator
  
• Red Iron Crown is now a Senior Moderator
  
• diomedea is now the Team Leader of the International Forums, replacing fcbayerndm
  
• fcbayerndm is no longer a moderator
  

We are not currently seeking new moderators.

Update: I am not spherical yet. Somebody (who shall remain the boss) forgot to take the "global moderator" part out of the job title when putting my name in Sal_vager's old job.

Well, we're pretty informal. But at least officially, I am in charge of the General section of the forum, and "my" team is Red Iron Crown, purpletarget, AmpsterMan, and Specialist290. Essentially, if they're unsure about how to deal with something, they ask me. And then I say, "I dunno. What do you think, Sal_vager?"

^^ Vanamonde is being modest, he's a very experienced moderator who gives sound advice to us newbs. (Totally not sucking up to my new boss, it's true )

It's true though that the hierarchy is very informal, even Kasper and the blue names often bounce their decisions off the rest of us for opinions to double check themselves. It's extremely rare for a high ranking moderator to "pull rank" and overrule a more junior mod, they more often make the call when the rest of us can't reach a consensus.

If things are as informal as you say, what does a rank change actually do?

The blue named moderators have additional responsibilities compared to common green named mods. They review the notices and infractions that are issued, to make sure we're being as professional and unbiased as possible. They also provide coaching and guidance for the newer mods.

While it is informal, there is still a hierarchy. If Vanamonde and I were to disagree on how to handle a situation and couldn't reach a consensus, I would defer to him and support his decision. Almost all of the time we and the other mods are able to reach a consensus so such situations are very rare, but it can happen.
