On The Subject Of Reputation.

Hi, Upsilon---

I appreciate your effort in writing this, but I don't think what people feel, agree with and what people do with rep is any of our business. I honestly think of rep as a small token of appreciation to show a person when you like his post, his ship or his mod.

I have to admit, I rep people who think the same way I do as well.

As for the White Bar group, It's a mere fad; Some people (like myself) are of course going to leave it someday. But it still goes to show that rep isn't everything; What about thread ratings? People can go on and rate every thread terribly without context at all, without actually looking like a troll. That's pretty notorious IMHO.

The point is; I think we should let people do what they want with their rep power, because it's pretty much none of our business as well, just as what other's opinions aren't. :)

Firstly, I'm amazed (not surprised) that anyone is so obsessed with the reputation system to write a thesis about the meaning, implications and current trends of +rep related stuff...

On the points made by OP:

What is Reputation?

Subjective internet credits

So, what benefits does Reputation have?

None

Why would Reputation be a bad thing?

Arbitrary and subjective interweb points may stimulate superiority complex and other psychological mechanisms associated with egotism.

Is there a way to circumvent this problem?

Sure! It's quite simple.

Don't keep track of points or abolish the system altogether.

Should the Reputation System exist at all?

No

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy giving/receiving rep for great craft/mods, witty comments or critical opinions, however, I generally view the rep point mechanism (i.e. the green points beside a user's name) as an illusionary superiority system stimulating the formation of a circle of dogs licking each others rear ends...

EDIT: I should've read all the posts in this thread and just +1ed mystbusters844's post. I've been handing out too much rep to random posts in the last 24h (like candy if you will), but I'll make sure to give you some rep points as soon as I can ;)

Every once in a while, I read that new forums software is somewhere on the horizon. If we leave vBulletin behind, perhaps we will leave our green bars here as well? That's probably the best time to change the rep system, simply because it might be implemented differently on the new forums, anyway.

In my short experience, it seems that very little Rep comes from actually doing anything (such as answering a question, posting a tutorial, releasing a mod) in comparison to making smart-a** comments.

I don't think this means anything is wrong with the reputation system, it's just a reflection of the "community". I put that in quotations because I'm searching for another word that seems more fitting and can't think of it. Audience, perhaps.

I find that when a "community" goes sour the term "Peanut Gallery" suffices, a Peanut Gallery being a few rows of people in Victorian Theatres who would throw peanuts at the performers and heckle them endlessly.

Rep is good because it lets people know your not a gray-bar noob that what you make and do is quality. As a two bar member i recieve a decent amount of respect, Not much but what i get is good,

Rep is the result of people liking what you do, Chances are if someone has been here for a while but doesnt have much rep than you know what he does no-one cares for, Its a security for the people who will be installing your mods or other things because they know others like you and they should too.

I got an infraction because I forgot to post some words along with the image. Which would have destroyed the delivery of the joke. But hey, rules are rules.

Anyway, here it is with some words:

Some words.

I've found that if you check profile pages of people who have posted in any thread that has the word "rep" in the title, you'll see that rep is being handed out en mass there... Threads ABOUT rep are looking like rep fishing ponds.

Off topic: Quite frankly the ban against reaction image posting is one of the best things about this forum. As I dimly recall someone from SA once putting it, "It's nice to be able to read about and enjoy pictures of someone's recent trip to Peru without some guy ....ting up the thread with pictures of cats." IMO reaction images should be even more heavily moderated than they are now.

Yeah it's quite distasteful... Particularly since some rep phishers* subsequently feel the need to create threads solely to authorise and flaunt their "elite" status on the forums using several statements of superiority, for instance:

This is meant to be a catalog for newbies and experienced forum-goers alike, as to the best and most appreciated individuals on the KSP forums.

I sincerely hope the new forum will get rid of this arbitrary cringe-worthy system, or that it at least will eliminate the tracking of subjective and completely meaningless internet points.

*The author of the linked thread makes sure to blow his/her own horn at the end of the opening post in an attempt to get more rep... classic

So am I missing something. Is rep actually worth something or redeamable? I've gotten rep only a few times but it was just readsuring. Either I said something funny or provided useful feedback or bugreports. Just kinda like a pat on the back I thought?

There is literally no tangible benefit from having more reputation. You get some green pips by your name and get mentioned in threads where they care about rep, that's it.

Well, essentially, a group of people got light green bars (which you get for a lot of reputation). Then made a special group for them.

Yea, it's meaningless

Well, I'm surprised. I started this white bar thing as a joke to parody the light-green group by posting semi-unkind things about the members in jest, rather than useful, accurate, and kind info about members.

I did not realize I would be leading a revolution of people who shun the traditional rep system. I really don't want to offend anyone, so if you're unhappy with what I'm doing, or even with my thread, tell me, so I can take action. :)

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
