Need Screenshot Help; Problem Solved!! Thanks for your help!!

Recommended Posts

OK, I'm a newbie and I've looked, but I can't find any reported bugs pertaining to using the F1 key to take screenshots. F2 toggles the UI just fine, however repeated F1 presses results in not a single screenshot being taken. I'm playing on a laptop running Win 8.1.

I checked the root folder where KSP is installed and there is indeed a folder titled "Screenshots", but it is empty.

Is there a quick fix for this? Is it operator error? I was going to include a screenshot of my KSP installation showing the Screenshot Folder, but I just noticed I'm not allowed. Take my word for it.

Any help is much appreciated! I mean I just made my first successful orbit of Kerbin and not a screenshot to show for it! :(

Check the Settings page in the Main Menu, the key might have been remapped. In the Settings, you can remap it to F1 or another key.

Alternatively, you can also open and check the settings.cfg file directly. It should look like this:

TAKE_SCREENSHOT
{
primary = F1
secondary = None
group = 0
modeMask = -1
modeMaskSec = -1
}

Also, welcome to the forums! :D

Cheers,

~Claw

Whenever you take a screenshot the log file should note that its been taken. If you look at the ouput_log.txt or player.log file you'll be able to see if the issue is KSP not getting the F1 key or KSP getting that and not saving the image. Thats should be a help to start with

Thanks for the reply.

I checked my settings.cfg file and it matches what you posted exactly. All my key bindings seem normal. Could my screenshots be getting saved somewhere else?

I appreciate your help.

Thanks for the reply.

I checked the setting.cfg file as you and TheClaw suggested and it looks perfect. I'm interested in your output_log.txt or player.log file suggestion. I couldn't find a player.log (I searched KSP_win for *.log and *.txt), however I did find the output_log.txt.

It is a huge file. I did a find "screenshot" and "take_screenshot" from the edit command and got no hits. So I don't know if KSP is registering my F1 keystrokes during game play.

For me taking screenshots is a big part of the game experience, so I'm hoping with some help to find a fix.

Thanks again~

Per Trigger's suggestion, press ALT+F2 to open the debug log. Then press F1 to take a screenshot, and it should give the path where the save file is being sent, or if there is some file error. I would start by looking there first, before digging through the output_log.txt. You can find that file in the KSP_Data directory.

Thanks for the tip. I opened the debug log, and pressed F1. A "log: SCREENSHOT!!" entry was immediately made. However it didn't show any path for saving the file and when I checked the Screenshot folder in the KSP_win folder it was still empty. I also did a search of the output_log.txt for the term "Screenshot" and got no hits.

Someone else suggested that I may need to reinstall. Is there anything else you can think of before I do that?

Thanks again~

Just a stab in the dark, but where is KSP located on your computer? It could be a permissions thing, where you don't have write permissions on the directory. Unlikely as you're able to save files and write logs, but still. I'm at a loss :D

And note: Reinstalling isn't that bad. Just save your entire "saves" folder (and "gamedata" folder if you use mods) and put it (or them) into the new KSP install folder and you'll have exactly the same game you did before.

As I noted in your other thread, this can happen if you have KSP installed in Program Files. Moving the KSP folder to its own spot on the C drive should fix it. No telling where Windows may have hidden the pics you've already tried to take, though. I never did find mine.

Okay. We've been stabbing around about this for a bit. What might help out more is if you could tell us what version of KSP (steam, store version, etc) you are running. And perhaps upload one of your output_log.txt files. I've confirmed that mine also does not show a Screenshot path, so your searching there won't turn up anything except a lack of an "Error!"

Providing the output_log.txt might give us some info, or at least provide some clues as to where the pathing is pointing. If you do reinstall (non steam), make sure you keep away from Program Files, Desktop, Documents, or any other similar locations (as Vanamonde suggests). Otherwise windows likes to "help you out" sometimes. I've heard some people's pictures end up in the "Documents" directory, or in the "Pictures" directory. They might even get buried in the AppData directory.

Good luck,

Thanks to everyone who weighed in on this issue!! We can put this baby to bed! Case closed! Solved!

A big shout out to Vanamonde who came up with the winning answer!

Once I confirmed the screenshots were working after moving the KSP folder out of Program Files (x86), I made a note of the name of the screenshot. They are simply screenshotX.png where X=the number of that particular screenshot. I then searched my hard drive for "screenshot".

Claw you were correct about the AppData directory. All screenshots I've ever taken are in this location:

C:\Users\Dean\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\KSP\KSP_win\Screenshots

Believe me I never would've thought to look in a Virtual Store! I had previously scanned the AppData directory looking for a KSP folder with no luck.

By the way after moving the game out of Program Files (x86) it ran fine, however I lost my saved games. They were also found here.

Thanks again everyone. I will definitely pay it forward when I've learned enough to be helpful!
