Can you marry a PLANET?

Just wondering, is it possible for a man / woman in the USA (Any state where possible) to marry a planet or other celestial body? Would be weird.

Technically, celestial bodies are objects and there have been cases where marriage between humans and objects have occured.

So.....

I now pronounce you Homo sapiens sapiens, and main-sequence star.

When you ask a legal question, you need to establish for which country that question should be asked.

I don't know of any modern occurence where a human has married an object. Marriage requires consent between two parties. An object can not give consent.

But the owner of the object can. But no one owns stars. Or planets.

Hmm...... Ownership of stars could perhaps be subject to those BS star registries even though they violate the Outer Space Treaty (and common sense). So you might possibly find an owner of the star you're interested in and convince them to consent to your marriage. Or, you could just set up a corporation for your celestial body. In the good old USofA corporations are people, and as such should be capable of marrying other people. (They marry other corporations all the time, in a manner of speaking.) You could then marry your chosen celestial body's corporation.

Good luck finding a Justice of the Peace, Priest, Paster, Representative of Baphomet, or any other official to agree to marry you in-absentia. Typically both parties have to be present at the ceremony and be witnessed for it to be official. (Though surely there's precedence somewhere of people marrying their recently deceased loved ones.) Might be better to try living with your chosen celestial body long enough for a common law marriage to take effect.

Good luck with that.

It happens on a regular basis. In some counties, marrying someone post mortem is possible. In others marrying animals.

In Texas, neither party needs to actually be present. As long as there is a valid license, either or both parties can be represented by proxy. There was, in fact, a marriage performed between a cosmonaut onboard ISS and his fiance. The marriage was conducted over the radio by an officiant at JSC, with the bride present.

I knew this state was weird, but wow. So, if the bride/groom/other kisses the proxy, is that automatic grounds for divorce?

Interesting use case though.

Yeah, I'm gonna need some evidence to support the one with the animals. We've all heard of "man marries a cow", "woman marries a tree" etc., in stupid newspapers, but we're talking about legal marriages here, recognized by the country, not some mumbo jumbo in front of a shaman.

Post mortem marriages are a legal anomaly. Rare occurences in few countries happening when there's a deceased party's written consent.

But this forum is based in the uk so the US wouldn't get anything out of suing this thread or something like that

Actually, the owners of the forum (SQUAD) is based in Mexico, and I think the servers are there too, so I would consider this a Mexican forum, under Mexican jurisdiction. Plus, the suers would be suing SQUAD for their forum, not the forum itself. I think. I don't actually know anything about law.

Well, legally i don't think any country recognizes a marriage to a planetary body. But if you two consider yourselves a couple, we won't judge. Although, i don't think the planet is attracted to you as you are to it. ;)

.-. gravity pun that actually made me laugh. :sticktongue:

Shamans often carry more authority than the local government.

Yeah, but I am pulling with the same force. Most of it comes from mass, though.

If you're looking to hook up with a planet, start by trying to NOT not things like that. Some are so sensitive about their mass that they've turned to black holes for help.

Well Saturn is clearly polygamous (count the rings :) ) so yeah, it probably won't care about one more spouse.

Some gas giants might be down with this sort of thing. Might be a hard time getting it to feel like an equal partnership though.

Your mileage may vary.
