I've handed this mod over to GregroxMun.  You can find the post here.

I'm still going to add a wide variety of skin tones, but I've put together a texture replacer thing for humans in KSP. The models are still incorrect, but it is a good way of adding some simple realism. Good for RO.

I will see about shrinking the head. I'll see if I can write a plugin for it.

I left the eyes. That's why... I'm now more scared than with the Scott Manley head...

Dear god you've made the only thing that ACTUALLY competes with the scariest thing I've seen on this forum.

The Scott Manley Head mod still wins though... It's ******* terrifying on all levels.

I've been working on a normals map to give more face structure to Kerbals. I posted a WIP in the texture replacer thread that adds ears and a nose of sorts along with teeth and a throat. Been trying to improve the face with a brow line, cheeks and a better nose, but with the eyes so far apart my first try made them look very sickly with sunk in eyes. Second try make them look a bit mean with too much forehead. Getting better, slowly. When I have something more I'll put up a fresh file. I included the Gimp file which has layers with guide lines to show where the eyes fall and stuff. The teeth only use a tiny part of the white area and that area is mirrored between sides and top/bottom. The Normals map will apply to any male head texture that dosen't have it's own when placed in the default folder. Feel free to use the files to come up with something better then my clumsy dabbling.

What would it take for modders to access the kerbal models and animations? Is that something Squad needs to allow and simply hasn't yet or is it something they physically can't do?

Because I can't get over how good a regular kerbal head would look on a human scale body. I say human scale because I believe if we do ever get the opportunity to make scaled up kerbals for RSS they should remain kerbals. They'd be the size of humans, but would retain their cartoony aspect. Exaggerated features, eight fingers, etc.. wish I could draw.

I will eventually. I run OS X, so there is no native support there, but I do have Gimp, so I should be able to get it to work.
