No Parachute Challenge

Recommended Posts

I'm rather new to the forum but I have a challenge. Suppose you just came back from the mun and you realize that you forgot your parachutes. The challenge is to land safely on kerbin with no parachutes and NO Engines.

Your craft must start from an orbit of at least 90km. It must survive reentry heating (duh). No Mods are allowed except for FAR. The craft must carry at least 1 kerbal and he must survive the landing.

Rankings:

Easiest: Land on Kerbin.

Easy: Land on kerbin within 20km of KSC.

Moderate: Land On Duna.

Hard: Land on Eve:

Impossible: (dunno why I put this) Land on any planet without an atmosphere( I would like it to be gilly)

Again No Mods allowed.

Oh and one more thing that makes the challenge super hard: NO WHEELS

RCS is allowed. Please take screenshots and if you have recording software, a video would be great.

Better yet, Craft Files!

A space plane the can land in the ocean is helpful for this challenge

TYPOS Its also missing things.

Landing on any atmospheric planet is pretty easy. Just add wings.
Since Duna has the thinnest atmosphere it's probably the hardest to land on. And landing on Gilly with just RCS is VERY easy.

But why is Laythe not in this list?

Guys Guys, all you need to do is spam RCS until you surpass the TWR of 1.00.. Though I ask is hyperedit allowed since after all you want us to start at an orbit of 90km.

Just asking, :P Since you know sending a payload to 90km only to do a challenge can be quite redundant if done consecutive times ;)

Yeah, you should think about changing that rule. As others have said, anyone could just spam enough rcs so the twr is high enough to do a soft landing.

I made my 2 Kerbals EVA at 2KM above the ocean when my parachutes failed and they survived if that counts :)

that works

I said no engines, rcs counts

Im thinking about re-uploading this challenge with better rules

Ok, so here is my Duna 'Spirit Style' landing.

Shadowplay did an update and reset the save location to the wrong drive, so the video stopped near the end (as my drive was full). The result is below the video.

Good job

I also did this in the spirit style landing challenge.

Wait, hold on, is that my challenge you're talking about? For one thing, you didn't land with no parachutes- you jettisoned them at a distance to the ground. Also, what is that craft above that you used? I don't remember that... Anyways, I respect you for being able to land something so tall onto a hill of any kind, but I may ask you how is this "spirit style"? MER-A was encased in a pod (I ignore the air cushions), and the bottom of the pod was jettisoned after the parachute opened, yet you had none of those in your video above. That was a great entry though.

This was a second tangential attempt that I was going to post on your challenge. I never posted it because the video got cut off at the end. My aim was to do the same as my first try, but see if I could get a craft onto Duna without any chute at all. Sorry for the confusion. I probably shouldn't have called it a Spirit style landing tbh. lol.

Edit:

Funny thing about the pic of the craft on Duna. The 'legs' on the front and back blew out a lot more cubic struts than the sides on impact. So the whole thing is actually balanced on two of the legs, with the reaction wheels holding it steady.

It obviously wasn't coming home. So I actually sent a rescue ship that landed nearby and took the crew back to Kerbin. First time I have rescued any Kerbals from Duna in all the years I have played this game. :P

Holy sweet cheezuz...

Also, do you think I should get my challenge back to the top of the forums? There was only one entry (you), so I want to add some more meat to that thread before I let it die. It seemed that people had quite a lot of ideas that they were about to use, but the thread somehow sank into the spacecraft exchange's forgotten abyss...

Erm, I was kinda lazy, so I didn't bother to uninstall Kerbal Alarm Clock and Kerbal Engineer Redux. Neither of the mods were used during flight.

Also, I used hacks to get it into the collision with Minmus (but not when during the collision)

At the very end, I had to reload a couple of quicksaves because the KSP engine doesn't simulate every instant

Other than that, I pride myself on not using RCS.

It's certainly worth bumping the thread. Hopefully someone will get interested.

That's still landing with no parachutes.

Here's my hard attempt on Eve.

Yes, it has an engine but it was only used for the de-orbit burn.

Update: Darn - just spotted the new rule of no wheels! Oh well, it was fun anyway. Though, thinking about it, technically I used Landing Gear rather than wheels ^_^.

Update 2: An "landing" without deploying the landing gear...

I, frankly, do not even understand why it should be hard to land on Eve with no parachutes, while being easy to land on Kerbin. The atmosphere on Eve is much thicker that Kerbin's, making any landing easier.

True. The only slightly hard bit was having all the craft behind a heat shield.
