Drive a Kerbal to the top of K2

So I'm into rovers lately.

Dakar is coming up and even though KSP is about flying huge space stations into deep space, it is also a very good platform for designing little fast things that never leave the earth. (cars)

As a big Dakar fan I could not resist throwing away all my blueprints for interstellar colonisation and started designing a car that was up for the Dakar Rally challange.

And then I did this :

eRmibmY.png

I drove from the runway to the top under 30 minutes !

Can you do this ? Can you prove it ? Do you want to ? Do you like bananas ?

I am even giving you the wheelpart I used:

  https://www.dropbox.com/s/pldyzyf2dwiiuk6/roverWheelM1.cfg?dl=0

(copy the part here: Kerbalspaceprogram/GameData/Squad/Parts/Wheel * Make sure to backup the original wheel)

It's not all about a tuned wheel, you will still need a car that can handle it, e.g. This wheel won't work if you don't tune its position, or ballance weight, or without a wing

Let's go ^_^

                                                      Rules:

- You have to drive a Kerbal from the runway to the top of K2 mountain under 30 minutes.

- All mods and editing files are allowed.

- 5200 meters is the minimum.

- Add a screenshot of the vehicle on top of K2 with the time.

- Cheating is for losers.

Goodluck gentlemen.

Azimech Did it !

Not seeing a screenshot of the car parked on top, but hey, he did it in 20 minutes and even came 5471 meters high !

Congratz, you are now officialy a "mountain climber"

Leaderboard

1. Azimech - T+00:20:11, 5367 meters.

2. Triop - T+00:29:53, 5219 meters.

3.

Not all of us know how to mess with the wheel configs for betteer speed ;)

I didn't know either, took me 2 hours googeling, dedication & devotion I call it.

I will help you in my other Dakar thread http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/128162-challenge-request-dakar-route/,

I presume then that editing the config file doesn't count as cheating?  There are a lot of us who still play KSP with very few modifications, so achieving this task in less than 30 minutes is going to be nigh on possible.  Would it not be better to have two leaderboards; one quoting times for players using mods, and one for players who don't?

Editing the config file is what I am going for, I am learning how to do this just typing in numbers and hoping that it will work ^_^ Time consuming because I have to restart the game after hacking the cfg file, test the part on my craft, tuning, and testdrive...

Time consuming, so a challenge....

But I would love to see someone driving up K2...driving 21 m/s top ....Yes, I would make a list for that, hell I would allmost pay to see someone do that       :o

Okay, which one is the K2? I assume the highest one west of the KSC?

Just get above 5200 meters above groundlevel starting driving from the main runway, if you think you can see a other mountain, go for it. ^_^

First time I'm driving my rally car since 1.0.4.

Well driving ... switched on the jets and did some browsing, it's pretty stable up to 180 kph so i leave the throttle at 50%. I probably won't beat you though, it's a long range thing not built for ultra high speeds. Made my own adjustments to the wheel, the rest is stock.

I did it! I had to modify my car with 4 juno's to keep the pressure on the wheels at high angles. It worked until finally the car flipped.

If anyone wants to drive the modified car, if requested  I will upload the modified wheel to Kerbal Stuff. I'll include a sound file and config for Rover Wheel Sounds, because it sounds like a mean race car. This version is pretty stable considering the archaic wheel physics, and it has a tendency to correct itself up to 65 m/s and you can even drive it without hands on shallow terrain. Homebrew suspension FTW!

NICE, you just went to the top !

I like the way you did it to, very creative

And I'd like to take a look at that wheel part, I like to compare it with mine to learn more about config files.

I thought it was commonly accepted that the mountain was called "Mountlookitthat", not K2...

Okay, I'll let you know when I've uploaded the mod file and the revised vehicle.
