So what happened to the barn?

Recommended Posts

If the barn concept art wasn't filled with every "redneck" stereotype known to man I wouldn't have had a problem with it.  As it stood it was just utterly terrible.

I liked the barn somehow. Well, not when it was presented, but as soon as I saw what came after it. I think the current buildings are lifeless and sterile. But I do not care so much for graphics, so it is ok to me. I'd rather want the developers to see working on new stuff or fixing bugs than on the graphics.

Like I said, I have zero interest in starting another big fight over this. Needless to say, it does seem Squad has learned we can't be trusted with this kind of thing.

Think about a game like Skyrim. Obviously the dragon armor looks 'cooler' than fur armor, but that's not to say both can't have their own artistic charm. This is pretty standard stuff in gaming. I happen to quite like the idea of a few intrepid kerbals cobbling things together from spare parts in old farm turned abandoned airfield. Its just fun, and there's a bravery and a romance to it, the way a kid might imagine building a makeshift rocket out of parts from a junkyard. And yeah, after a few launches, reaching orbit maybe, you're going to start upgrading to more rough-industrial looking buildings, then space-age, then a state of the art facility. Sure, you could just have tier zero be a bland miniature of the current facilities, but you'd be missing a huge opportunity for the player to engage in a real sense of story and progress.

Just a few images that could be cool for tiers 2 and 3:

I don't like Skyrim because it's based on an idea of grindy progression like most of RPGs. Maybe Skyrim has some story, but I never was excited enough to play it beyond the first 15-20 minutes. And KSP is not an RPG, and yet it's somehow grindy. I'm totally fine with an actual story telling though.

Also none of those pictures represent actual barns, in which rockets are/were built. What you posted is basically what Bac9 proposed, except he made his buildings more space-agey and less rusty.

Well they were ideas for Tiers 2 and 3 - the barn would be long gone by then. Speaking personally, I would like to see the Barn implemented somehow for the reasons Pthigrivi mentioned - I like the idea of that kind of beginning to the game.

No, those were suggestions for middle tiers, which are fine but a bit bland at the moment. Use your imagination though. These are little green dudes who want to go to space. Realism in this case is pretty flexible. I don't think we need be overly concerned with cleanrooms. I think its quite easy to imagine they needed cheep, uninhabited land to test rockets and found an abandoned airfield that was once an old farm. There could be half disassembled aircraft and shipping containers around, the SPH is a rusty old hangar, they're running operations out of a winnabago, its a good story! Later as they progress they can afford bigger and badder equipment, but this places you where they began. This is why those of us that understood we were looking at process renderings were so excited, because career mode was finally embracing a sense of real creativity and character.

OK, that was a lot of posts to not answer my original question.

I don`t want to know what you thought of the barn, That has been done in too many threads already. I wanted to know what happened to the barn and is it still going to be part of the game?

If not then will there be something else to increase the number of tiers?

Last I heard it was being worked on for later release. Anyone have newer information?

That`s about it, just wondering what happened to the tier 0 barn?

has it been dropped quietly or is it still a thing we might get?

As I understand it, no, "the barn" itself will not be in the game (thank <deity>, that thing was atrocious), but we will receive a new set of buildings to expand the tiers, something like an old military complex or some such.

Hopefully 'some such'. Kerbals starting off in an old military complex would make me sad and it doesn't seem to fit with the 'no militarisation' theme that's always been part of KSP.

See my previous comment.  The barn sans the idiotic "redneck" stereotypes and with some proper looking (and aligned) textures would be fine by me.

I was never a big fan of the idea and design of "the barn", it also doesn't make sense since kerbals don't seem to require any nutrition. Barns also seem quite mundane (word of the month), I'd much rather see bac9 come up with something creative.

Personally, I wouldn't mind something like Aztec/native american themed tier 0 buildings. As a background story, kerbals would've built these structures after discovering the KSP monolith which awakened their interest in the stars/planets. Also, it'd be a nice nudge to Mexico where KSP has its origin/development. I could totally see structures based on the ones below being used for observation of the heavenly bodies and launching a first generation of explosive flying devices in a (un)certain direction:

Cool, as long as we get something. Also as long as that something does not look as generic as the current buildings which it is really hard to see any difference between.

Here`s hoping the something we get will be when 1.1 drops.

Well... I find these landscapes beautiful but my opinion is that they would better fit in another spot on Kerbin to explore. Not really as the KSC...

But that is how the space race began. Turning death machines into exploration machines. It fits perfectly.

On Earth, yes. Not necessarily on Kerbin. I like the idea that the kerbals decided to go to space just because they could and they wanted to, rather than doing spaceflight as a not so subtle 'our death machines are bigger than yours' followed by 'our way of life is better than yours' propaganda piece.

But lets stop there before we digress into politics.
