What's the "stupidest" fun you've had in KSP?

Have you ever done something that wasn't productive at all but was somehow really entertaining?

A couple random examples of mine would be messing around with a few Cupcake inspired ion landers on Minmus, building grasshopper-style VTOL rockets and practicing suicide burns, or building a massive rocket to see how quickly I could impact the moon (25ish minutes)

I'd say most of my time in KSP is unproductive in terms of advancing a career save, expanding a sandbox setup or even expanding my "fleet" of active craft.  I do a lot of derping about and the productive stuff happens almost by accident when one particular derp happens to turn into something good!  But I guess all the derping about is, in it's own way, productive;  at least you gain design tricks and put in some more hours of pilot training.

Some of the most fun I've had with the vanilla game was sending a lander + rover to Moho trying to do some rock crawling and ending up instead rocketing down a kilometers-long slope trying desperately not to kill my Kerbal.  That and just derping around on Kerbin with tiny VTOL hoppers and their carrier boats.

Took a pure passenger train to an outlying outpost some 100km behind the mountains of KSC..

2 passenger cars, 10 kerbals

Burnt too much fuel climbing hills.. Eventually loco ran out..

She was a branchline centercab.0-6-0

The only fuel was in the hoods each end made up of jetfuel tanks

I usually drive tanker trains for a reason..

Fuel..

Twas an enjoyable drive.. The fun bit was the earthshattering click when I realised the mistake :)

Was rather obvious

Watched a Scott Manley video where he tried to rover the Dres canyon. I built a wide and long, low sitting buggy, and had a go. Sent multiple missions and tried my best. The results were much like the video but great fun was had.

I tweeted him about that video and he said mine was probably a slightly harder attempt. Also some of the greatest fun I ever had making a video.

Probably the most silly fun I have had in KSP was making a kerbal statue. It used Kerbpaint, but was stock otherwise :P

Wow! I am impressed! Now land it on the Mun. :D

If you had a big enough - and steep enough - ramp on the other side to land on, you might be able to make that without the parachute...

It wasn't like I didn't consider it. The problem is that when parts touch parts at high speed, the collision physics goes nuts. As hard as I have tried (and trust me, I've tried) I can't get it to work above something like 14 m/s and even below that results are highly unpredictable.

Ah, shame - thought that might have been the case. Too bad, it would have been awesome!

Realizing, with just a few days to spare, that in putting together my Eve lander mission, I'd forgotten to include the orbital transfer stage to come home.  My kerbalnaut would be able to get back up into low Eve orbit, but then be stranded there.

Decided that it was a matter of honor that he should have a return stage waiting for him upon arrival at Eve.

Put together the most ridiculously high-dV ship I've ever built.  Ion-powered, lots and lots of drop tanks.

Made the run from Kerbin to Eve in eight days.  That's eight Kerbin days, i.e. 48 hours.

This was pre-1.0, so no reentry heating.  Beat my kerbalnaut to Eve with a few hours to spare, then successfully aerobraked to orbit.

Hitting Eve's atmosphere at several dozen kilometers per second was ... dramatic.

In 0.90, building a helicopter with stock parts that could take me to 20 km altitude using nothing but electricity.

OVduL0h.jpg

To fly:

  1. turn on SAS
  2. hold down the Q key
  3. watch as it lifts off and starts to climb
  4. suppress giggles

Rotates slowly at first.  As it climbs and the air gets thinner, starts spinning faster and faster.  By the time it reaches its operational ceiling of around 20 km, it's spinning so fast it's practically a blur.

The biggest challenge flying it was that it was somewhat unstable-- it had a tendency to "drift" away from the perfectly vertical, which takes some finesse on the controls to nudge it back to true.

Oh, definitely stuff for the fan fiction project I'm doing.  I'm making all sorts of goofy things, then purposely blowing them up, just to get a screenshot for the story.

It isn't really advancing my career game much, but it's great fun!

Very impressed. I wanted to try doing that as the first stage of an Eve lifter back in 0.90, literally never got off the ground.

Oh yes. I remember using Whack-A-Kerbal to unnecessarily destroy a perfectly good space station (in a quickly reverted special-purpose quicksave, of course) just to get the crew's horrified reaction shots in response to something happening down on the surface.

I haven't tried that yet..... you can destroy stuff with it?

I tried a similar design for getting off Eve-- figured I'd make an end run around that pesky atmosphere, get myself a couple of dozen kilometers up using just electricity before spending precious rocket fuel.

It "worked"... but just barely.  It did get off the ground, but the heavy gravity on Eve was almost too much for it.  It was climbing at like one meter every two seconds.  Climbed a couple of hundred meters, formed a mental image of what the next few hours would be like, decided it just wasn't worth it.

I use the "Kaboom" mod for my horror reaction shots. Precision destruction. :) Recently Subeth and Bill don't seem very happy, despite being very happy near the Kerbin. Though I use 4 Subeth faces from my template of Subeths, so this hardly matters. :P

When it comes to flat out stupid fun, I remember when i used 5 Yamato turrets and 14 Kongo Battleships guns on huge steel beams and launched them on the pads and the runway. It didn't go well for both of those buildings. :P I frequently point naval gun turrets at the VAB and watch them explode.

Silliness? What are you talking about? What's a silliness? Someone please help.

But really. The silliest thing... probably my latest mission to Laythe, which qualifies as more completely absurd than silly. I was fed up with all that silliness of coming up with a lander that could actually properly gravity turn on Laythe and not end up in a tumble, or run out fuel, and could survive re-entry... so I gave up on all that "orbital rendezvous" nonsense people keep going on about and just built a stage to return to Kerbin from Jool orbit. Then a stage (or two or three) to get that to Laythe escape velocity... then a big, heavy, clunky, terribly built heat shield for Laythe's atmosphere.. then a capture stage, because 1.0's aerodynamics hate me and everything I build, then... I think it's clear by now where this is going. Somehow, I actually managed to launch that monster of a rocket, although I seem to remember just reaching LKO took about an hour. On the attempt that worked. Let's not talk about the failures...

Because who needs an efficiency anyways? MOAR BOOSTERS is the answer to every question.
