This could probably be best served in the tutorials section. Great tutorial man, there are a few very knowledgeable players on here but I know this will teach everyone a thing or two.

I agree... this should go into the tutorial section, then get pinned to the top.   This is a really good SSTO tutorial!

I don't think you mentioned it but having an open node at the rear of an SSTO causes a lot of drag. If you add a rear facing nosecone to rear it reduces the drag.

Also recent testing shown that closing intakes doesn't reduce the drag in 1.0.5.

It was a surprisingly good tutorial - and I say that while being totally biased against videos compared to text.

That's about the only SSTO trick I know..

One comment the reason ISP is lower in thick atmosphere for deep space engines is because the gas is past fully expanded and creates shockwaves in the exhaust nozzle that rob energy from the escaping gas.  Lifting low atmospheric engines expel the gas before it gets over expanded but in space the gas is underexpanded so you are losing potential energy and why they are never as efficient.
