Kopernicus Baby-Steps

Recommended Posts

Ok. Day one. I've created my first world, Smeer. A world, mind you, with so many problems it might as well be Donald Trump. Anyway, KittopiaTech is what I'm using. So I was playing around with the PQS editor. This was what happened. (in order of events)

uImQ6YJ.pngLooks good...

So yeah. Thus begins the learning curve.

I will when I need to. @The White Guardian had the tutorials.

The tutorials are really not that great. They don't actually explain a lot of the important parts. If you want some quality help with explanations and detail, from people who have actually made quality planet packs, come over to the Kopernicus IRC.

Additionally, one last thing. There's an unfortunate problem that seems to persist within the planet modding "community" where people make planet mods because of something which I like to call the "OMG I AM A MODDER!" effect. People hold the modders up as the highest level of content creators in KSP, so when they see planet modding and figure that it must be easy, they pick it up and throw something together and say "Hey look everyone now I have a mod!" Don't be that guy. It silences the good content creators like CaptRobau, Eudae55, Tygoo7, KillAshley, NovaSilisko, Sigma88, and even myself.

Make mods because you have a product that you want to make, not because you just want to be a modder.

They are, actually, they are a godsend to those with absolutely no idea how Kopernicus works. On the other hand, I do agree with you that lots of stuff is not explained in the tutorials I have made.

FYI I am working on something myself, and so far I'm pretty amazed by the results.

Conclusion: @GregoxMun I think that part of your comment came out a bit rougher than intended. Explained a bit further: those who have made a quality Kopernicus pack certainly know a decent amount of Kopernicus, of those who have not yet shown any of their work you cannot be sure.

As for my tutorials on Kopernicus, they are only meant to give a basic idea of how Kopernicus works as well as shows a few examples of how to create a procedural planet for instance. But the real key to making a good planet pack is practice. So please, @saurodye, keep modding. I'll keep an eye on this thread, if anything 'supernatural' happens I'll be here to help.

@The White Guardian @saurodye while @GregroxMun's comments might come off a bit rough I think he has a fair point. Basically, worry about putting in the work and making something good, and not trying to massage your ego. I don't think anything negative was directed specifically at either of you, but rather just expressed a weariness of people with big ideas that don't have much to show for it (yet). It's something that has happened many times on these forums.

My two cents: Keep at it. Everyone starts somewhere, modding is a continuous learning process. Don't be afraid to post, ask for help. I think I can safely speak for the community when I say we all want you to succeed and add another great mod to the game.

Yes. This thing. I didn't mean to say you should not be modding, I meant to say that you should be careful about why you're making mods.

Indeed, there is a fine line between making a mod for fun or quality, or making a mod for fame. And no, I did not believe GregoxMun meant anything negative at all. I also agree with GregoxMun that one should not rely on my guides too heavily, nor should they rely on my knowledge of Kopernicus too heavily. The guides give a nice introduction to Kopernicus, but the real skill comes with trying. Saurodye, don't be afraid to try some new things, such as PQSMods you have never used before. While the results may not always be what you seek, enlarging your knowledge of PQSMods is something you should always try to achieve. Like CobaltWolf just said, modding is a learning process. As for my own knowledge of Kopernicus, I know a trick or two, but if I can't find the answer, the real experts, such as Thomas P. and KillAshley, probably know what's wrong. You can always post a comment on the main Kopernicus thread with a question.

As for the mod I'm currently developing, none of you should have any worries. I create mods because I enjoy bringing my and other people's ideas to life, and because I like the idea of making someone else's game more fun. And I do not have to be famous or praised for that.
