Beat my speed record

Recommended Posts

It's time for you guys to beat my speed record.

Rules: build a stock turboprop, set global drag multiplier to 0.1 (I'm comparing with 0.90 performance, my old speed record) and see if your aircraft can go faster than 173m/s (623 km/h). Make the airplane available for download with instructions so we can verify it, after July 6, the date this challenge ends.

Allowed mods:

  • V.O.I.D. (you need any kind of reliable engine speed readout or you'll not be able to build a high performance engine without it, period).
  • Some kind of automatic pilot, best go with Pilot Assistant. SAS will only give you frustration due to engine vibration.
  • Editor Extensions Redux (highly recommended).
  • Part Angle Display.

For examples how to build turboprop/turboshaft engines and vehicles, head over here.

Here's a picture of my airplane doing it.

Have fun and please post your entries, even if unsuccessful!

Are there any rules for the design of the turboprop? Because I'm working on something that should get really good performance, but it's a bit... unconventional to say the least.

Well ... I'd like it if it hasn't got floating parts, at least give it some struts if you have to.

Oh, that's fine, by unconventional what I meant is that I'm effectively turning the engine inside out.

Fine by me, as long as it doesn't have engines on propeller blades.

I did it!  Well, not really.

This design is incredibly impractical, since the bearing is so fragile.  And it won't break any speed records.  But it is BY FAR the smallest working turboprop I've ever seen.  It is powered by 2 Junos, uses thermometer hinges for the bearing, and cubic octagonal struts for the blades!

It also does not work without "ignore max temperature" enabled.

First I tested it stock (just KER) and got up to 61 m/s before the bearing failed (usually it failed much earlier)

Then I tested with Time Control, slowed down to 1/2 speed to improve the physics accuracy and reduce vibrations.  The design tops out at 75.7 m/s.

Instructions to fly:  full throttle, stage, let it take off on its own.  Once it's more than a few meters in the air, raise the gear.  Throughout the flight, keep on soft controls and try to keep the plane level or rising as slowly as possible.  It may take a few tries to reach 60 m/s because there is a random chance that the bearing will fail before that.

Ive really got to look at that style of bearing.

100 m/s achieved!  Bearing redesigned and a bigger prop helped improve the speed.  The new bearing is built with a cone of thermometers and a small nosecone and is just about immune to bearing failure unless you time warp.

This plane is much easier to fly because it won't randomly disintegrate, take off at 40 m/s and keep level flight if you're going for the speed record.  It's also fun to fly around the KSC, with improved acceleration as well.

Top speed of 122.8!

This is actually a very good design with lots of room for improvement! I wonder why I never published my MK2 cargo bay engines, they're perfect for a lot of things!

If you place your aircraft on KerbalX, I'll put them in the hangar.

Also @Majorjim take a look at the evolution of your bearing on this last craft. Very interesting!

I just downloaded it, the bearing is great for props and does seem strong for that purpose! The aircraft was not controllable for me though.

I found it torquing left and if I tried to correct it for level flight it dropped speed, stalled and crashed. What was I doing wrong?

Alright, heres the Gremlin MK2 doing 224m/s. Fastest stock turboprop in the game to date! Download and more info from here. I beat Azimechs record 3 times in a row!

@sdj64I love your turboprop designs! They not only look good but actually work too!

Seems like it worked really well XD

Yeah notice it starts shedding turbine blades through the collider of the cargo bay

Strangely enough, below max engine RPM.

Anyway, it was accelerating while it happened, so my engine mod pays off :-)

@Azimech You should update the challenge description, it still says that the challenge ended in the 6th. I'm working on my plane some more, my new design has promise!

Ended or will end ... it says July 6th :-)

Could there be an SAS only category? Because i made this:

And this is with the drag multiplier at normal settings. At 0.1 it's about 63m/s

That's a mighty fine job!

Okay, I'll adapt the challenge but I've got some other things to do first.
