Planet modding discussion (moved)

Recommended Posts

So, I was thinking, that it would be nice to have a Saturn-like planet between Eeloo and Jool, possibly even a Neptune-like planet between the "Saturn" and Eeloo. Possible name ideas I have: (For "Saturn") Saurn, Satun, Serun. Your ideas/thoughts?

If you want to play with something like that, I'd recommend Outer Planets Mod. It creates a Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto analogue, called Sarnus, Urlum, Neidon, and Plock respetively. They are definitely stock-alike, and include a myriad of interesting moons and places to fly through. In my opinion, it should be stock, but, in the meantime, I'd definitely look into using it, if you want something like that.

An enthusiastic +1 to this.

The only reason I don't make "please give us more gas giants!" posts is that Outer Planets is so stunningly good that it would be a tall order for Squad to live up to that quality level.

Planet mods are nice, but a lot of KSP players like me prefer to keep things stock. We're just OCD like that. :P

That being said, I had heard at one point that Eeloo was originally planned to be a moon of a new gas giant, but ended up as a Pluto analog instead.

It would be nice to have a Saturn-like planet. New content is always nice.

As for the Neptune-like planet, Neptune is what's called an Ice Giant, a freezing cold planet similar to a gas giant but made of more dense elements. If a Neptune analog were to be added, it would probably be more realistic to have it further out than Eeloo.

Wait what?:0.0: What's their names?

Gas Planet 2 and Gas Planet 3, if this is what I think. They've been rumoured since other planets were first put in the game, however there are doubts as to whether they will ever be implemented. I can't get the quote up right now, but I think one of the devs said something like. "New planets are a very big maybe". While it is possible that we may get new planets in the future, I don't think we'll see them any time soon.

Also, if you want to play stock, then that's fine too. If you want more planets that are stock, we'll have to see what happens. The reason I recommended Outer Planets Mod was because it is the most stock-alike planet mod I've seen, and really ties in very well with the stock game.

I'm guessing a planet with rings like saturn would cause many computers to crash due to the part count of the rings. They consist of billions of rocks and ice particles and while it would sure be fun to try and dodge those like in Star Wars even setting a render distance for the individual particles wouldn't do much as the density of the rings is pretty damn high.

So, I downloaded the outer planets mod, and it's great, exept for one thing: The planets are all white. Is this intentional, or not?

Thats weird

that is a stupid amount of detail.

Literally a collisionless layer.

Hmm… I can't remember the solution to that right now. I'd ask on the thread, if I were you. There is a solution to that, don't worry.

The rings aren't actually lots of physical particles, because the amount of lag that would create would be considerable. Instead, I believe it's a flat texture that floats around the planet, creating the illusion of a proper ring from just about any distance you'd be operating at. If you're passing through the rings, of course, it's not entirely realistic, but just think of the issues if you instead had millions upon millions of tiny particles, each with their own motion and collision meshes and whatnot. It would be insane.

Maybe making the ring one huge "part" would solve the problem. That way u'd still have individual rocks to land on or much rather dock with if u wish to do so but they could all be connected to form a singe, giant part. And to further reduce lag an adjustable render distance could be added so everyone can render as many particles as her / his PC can handle.

Hi, could you look for the solution, CommanderSmith? I looked + posted on the thread, no response yet:(

I trust that you also installed Kopernicus and Module Manager?

You may have installed it incorrectly. Make sure you have the latest versions of Outer Planets Mod, Kopernicus, and Module Manager.

Also, the file structure should look like this:
GameData --> OPM --> (All the .cfg files and stuff directly inside that folder)
                  --> CTTP --> Textures --> (.dds files)
                  --> Kopernicus --> (folders marked "Config" and "Plugins")
                  --> ModuleManager.2.(whatever).dll

I'd get you a screenshot of what the folder should look like, but unfortunately, I can't do that right now.

Also, make sure you're trying this with no other mods installed. There's a chance there may be a conflicting mod somewhere.

ah, ok. I have got an experimental vesion of BDArmoury, so i'll delete it. Edit: I deleted everything but OLDD and Distant Object Enhancement, and they're still white. Also, There aren't any .cfg files in there, but others.
