Any plans for stock larger SRB's?

Recommended Posts

Definitely could use some bigger boosters.  And some smaller boosters.  And more boosters in general.  More Boosters!

"If the number of boosters on the ship = x, then the number of boosters you should have is x+1.  Remember to redo the math after adding a booster."

I suggested Porkjet to make modular SRB parts... something like solid fuel tanks of various sizes, and SRB nozzles, some with gimbal, and a way for the solid fuel only flows to the nozzle if all the tanks are inline with it, node attached to each other... and settings to define burn speed of each tank, so we can set it to different thrust during burn... :P

Personally I'd rather they just dump all the stock tanks, nose cones, fuselages and wings and implemented (or brought in from mods) procedural parts in their place.  You might have different types of parts.  For example, supersonic vs. subsonic wings.  The tech tree would then limit by type and by limiting the range of available values for the various procedural parameters (wing span, tank diameter, etc).

By bigger you mean wider, right? We don't need any taller SRBs!

Actually, I believe there is room for somewhat taller ones also? But mostly I agree, wider to attach to the big Kerbodyne stuff and get you up and out.

I like the adjustable burn rate idea but, for reality's sake, I would say that the burn rate would only be "selectable" during construction in the VAB. My guess is a real SRB's burn rate is entirely based on chemical composition during construction?  Also, how does an SRB use it's fuel...top to bottom, center to outer edge? It would be cool to have several SRB "tanks" (I use that term lightly) stacked so that as you move from one to the next the thrust would decrease, preventing overheating until you leave the atmosphere. I would tend to stick with real world realities, however...whatever they may be.

SRBs burn from the center to the edge. The shape of the 'chamber' in the center determines the thrust curve. And yes, the burn rate depends on the propellant formula
