Car Crashing Simulator

A few weeks ago I discovered that with enough force, certain joints can be bent and freeze in that position, like is normal for a lot of materials in real life and KSP being the oddball exception.

I wondered if it's a new feature and I wanted to test everything. So I started to build a car but ran into a problem regarding scale.

Then the Yllions came for a visit and agreed to show themselves for the first time. These extremely large, three eyed aliens agreed to test some road vehicles on the planet Kerbin. They can't do it on their own planet (according to them: "Filthy bureaucrats!") because they like to crash & smash cars, themselves and even buildings to pieces, and being as large as they are, would involve even more piles of paperwork than on Earth. And because bureaucracy is non-existent on Kerbin and there's no regard for life anyway, they have a green light.

You'll see more of their exploits in the future.

These cars are stock except one thing, resized and powerful wheels. Part count is high but 1.1.3 offers much better performance. A few days ago I crashed two of them head on with reasonable FPS, total part count 1600 (gif is speeded up). This newer car, the Lowell Iridium 1975, is 33 meters long and weighs 185 tons. They're great for drifting, racing and crashing!

Here's what 70+ m/s does with this car, comparable with 70 kph in real life.

Yep ... that body is bent not broken.

And this is called "Asleep at the wheel". Scary!

BRO THIS IS AMAZING WHY DIDNT YOU TELL ME ABOUT THIS EARLIER

Have you checked out Beamng Azimech? That game is awesome. One of my only alternatives to favorite game to KSP. That's what this reminds me of. Love those guys sitting on the car!

It's also my second favorite PC game. It is a beautiful game. I love the B-25 mod.

Amazing!  Is there anything special you need to do to get joints to bend plasticly in KSP?

Nope, stock will do. You need a lot of force though.

You only spent 2 days building these entire cars? Wow that's actually impressive. I spent over a month of on and off work on my triple seven.

That's what using KSP exclusively for four years will do to ya ;-)

Ya I'm impressed. How long were you actually sitting at your desk with your eyes locked on your screen? I've been playing for around a year and a half and I still have never been to Moho, Eve, Gilly, Eeloo or any of the moons of Jool. I have only gone to the Mun, Minmus, Duna, Ike, Dres, and Jool the planet. I guess I specialize in atmospheric flight and aesthetics.

I've been everywhere except landing on Tylo. Did complex gravity assist etc ... then suddenly got bored and hardly ever touched space again. Nothing to do!

So I started doing other things somewhere in 2014.

That's EXACTLY why I don't do space travel. It's not fun. If squad actually did something so that there was a goal to achieve maybe it would give people like us a reason to actually play the game like it was meant to be played. Turboprops and cars and whatnot give a reason to do something. There is a goal to achieve and records to break.

Well,  space is fun for some people man, me included. And the challenges you set yourself are the same for staying on kerbin or going to Duna. You just have to design something complex to do when you get there. :)

In this game we always set our own challenges and goals no matter where we go. Building complex detailed replicas that look and operate like the real space craft then flying that mission is, for me, extremely satisfying.

Not really man. If you have offset parts a ways away from another you will see this behavior in low speed accidents on small craft too.

Kerbal Space Program is not called Kerbal Space Program for no reason. KSP is made for space exploration.

I have been playing long enough to discover that I am interested more in the vehicles that utilize several separate craft to accomplish a given task. I.E. turboprops aircraft and highly intricate high performance vehicles that are created under very tight design parameters. I also like to be part of the group that is leading the field in certain technology. I.E. stock turboprops. So I found that I have a lot more fun and get more recognition for the stuff I do in the world of stock engines than space travel.

After all, the game is called Kerbal SPACE Program for a reason.

Why should I conform to the standard when there is so much more this program is capable of?

You can apply that ethos to space craft too. ;-)

uh

sure

You can indeed good sir! In the design of an imaginative complex collection of space craft. You could invent a new mechanism that would allow for a new level of detail for a replica spacecraft. All you have to do is think of it. ;-)

the limit really is just your own imagination.

The difference is that rockets are propelled by rocket engines.(obviously) Meaning there is means of propulsion in the game that power your craft.

Turboprop builders engineer there own means of propulsions and there is the challenge. I have no doubt that space travel is challenging in it's own ways but when your making a machine that operates based on a craft to craft connection through a glitchy wheel bearing in a game with zero support for it. There is a lot more of a challenge.

I was referring to the space craft themselves not the navigation.

In that regard the challenges are the same, self imposed, self imagined challenges. ;-)

Well I mean, with turboprops there is a speed record to beat. A endurance record. With space travel everyone has already been to Eve or Eeloo. There's nothing new to do. Besides maybe lowest part count to a body. That's about it.
