system requirements for graphical mods?

it seems like i can install as many part and planet packs to my game as i want, and never get even a bit of lag, even without texture reducers, ive currently got about 25 part packs on my ksp install and 2 planet packs, plus ferram aerospace to boot, but the instant i try to put even something like stock visual enhancements into a stock game install with no other mods, my computer has a meltdown and the game runs at like 15-20 fps despite pulling 100 with all those other mods, so what are the basic system requirements for something like that?

my specs:

amd a10 7850k 3.7(can turbo boost to 4 if i want to)GHz quad core apu(and of course the radeon r9 with 1GB of vram)

Gskill Ripjaws 16GB 2133 MHz ram

and i dont know if this matters, but an Asrock FM2A58M-VG3 +r2.0 AMD FM2+/FM@ DDR 3 1 PCIe 3.0 x16 D-Sub 4XSATA2 8XUSB2.0 Motherboard

edit: thank you good sirs

For some reason nearly all of the issues that have been brought up about performance and SVE have been with amd processors. I don't know why and I can't test to figure it out. Also part packs will bring ksp to a crawl when installed.  You don't even need to be using the parts for the game to slow down. Just having them in your GameData will slow the game down a quite a bit.

To answer your question,  SVE is pretty demanding regardless of how your game is set up.  If you read the last page or so on the thread,  you will see @Jashin with a gtx1080 getting roughly 40 fps with a heavily modded game. Maybe he can give you some pointers.

really?!, well now that is just strange, i have so many part packs installed on my game and i have no performance issues whatsoever, that is just so strange i dont get that

Yeah what i normally do with part packs is go through them and delete the parts i know i wont use. I also use procedural parts to replace all of the fuel tanks. this usually raises my fps by 10 or 15 fps. results may vary though. i only use 2-3 part packs but i usually run 90 other mods at the same time. Again, the problem might not be part related but maybe just the fact that im seeing nearly all performance issues stem from AMD processors

that would be really unfortunate, i cant upgrade the desktop im using right now, if i wanted a new processor and gpu, i would have to start from scratch and rebuild my entire machine

edit: as a sidenote i just noticed you were the one who created sun flares, really spectacular looking mod man, it is highly unfortunate that i cant run it, you created sve, man i feel stupid lol

Hi @noobsrtoast ! What is your GPU model precisely? Only 1Gb of VRAM sounds a bit low but you should be able to use Stock Visual Enhancements on Medium or Low I think.

Are you sure the game is rendered by your GPU and not by your CPU? I know there is a way to force it through drivers but I've only done it on my laptop which has a Nvidia card so I don't know where to look for AMD.

@Jashin im pretty sure my game renders using a mix of both however id be willing to bet that most of the weight ends up on the processor, my chip is an apu after all, could you elaborate a little more how to change the settings of stock visual enhancements?, perhaps the reason im having issues is because im trying to use it on high settings, but i have no idea how i would change the settings around to be less system intensive

thanks for dropping in to assist me

Are you using CKAN to install the mod? If so, you can just uncheck the box, delete the cache and then download the version called "Stock Visual Enhancements-Medium Res". It contains textures with a lower resolution that should ease the load on your rig. Otherwise, you can just download the same file from the first page of the mod thread.

I haven't tweaked the settings myself since they are fine-tuned by @Galileo and I don't know enough about EVE and Scatterer to change the config. But he might be able to help you uncheck some performance intensive options like volumetric clouds for instance.

The single most intensive part of SVE is scatterer's Ocean Shaders. You can disable this in the main menu in the scatterer window that pops up. If you want to disable Volumetric clouds, in game hit Alt+0 and toggle over to CloudManager.

There look for Kerbin-MainClouds and scroll down until you see an option for layerVolume. uncheck that and you should be good

No it wont mess anything up unless that mod has is own visual enhancement pack.

alright i just tested it, what an incredible night and day difference, just turning off ocean shaders i was able to keep the high settings with volumetric clouds, i pushed the game to the limit and it never dropped below 50 frames, thank you soooooooooooooooo much youre existence makes me happy

Thought I would comment on AMD processors - or at least the one I have in my laptop. While it is certainly no gaming beast, I can say that I suffered few of the bug problems others reported with various KSP versions. Well, the landing gear on planes did give me fits. Most of my problems have been just me being stupid. Anyway, my laptop is slow but steady.

I ran a test with only vanilla KSP + MJ. I had only 40 fps. The little time meter stayed green 99% of the time.

With the same setup and SVE I have 35 fps

Vanilla + MJ + Scatterer I get 30.

Vanilla + MJ + SVE + Scatterer  I run at 25 fps. I tried turning off ocean shaders, it did not seem to help plus it looks bad.

From this point on it doesn't seem to matter what else I add. I checked my 1.1.3 install that was modded until it broke and I had to remove a couple mods to make it run. I still had 4 planet packs including OPM and I was rock solid at 25 fps.

For those of you running 100 fps my piddly 25 would seem unplayable. Since I know nothing else it works fine for me. I am not complaining if it takes 12 actual minutes to make it from launch pad to circular orbit while the in game time reads 6:30. It is worth it to me to have such gorgeous views.

I do plan to add ram, I have 8 Gb and plan to double it. Maybe it will help boost the integrated graphics but if not it is more room for mods.
