The Battle Between Kormoran And Sydney Warship Pack (Movie Released!)

THE BATTLE BETWEEN SYDNEY AND KORMORAN 75TH ANNIVERSARY PACK

This is the central project page for my project to recreate the Battle between these ships that occurred nearly 75 years ago (a sort of movie/recreation whose release i'm aiming for the date of the battle, November 19th, though that may be optimistic and I may fallback on other important dates (such as the finding on Kormoran's lifeboats for example). All the ships are mostly complete, although there are a couple problems to fix before filming. Unfortunately there are problems which are truly beyond my control and I am unlikely to be able to solve.

The ships are modded and while the vessels in the "film" so to speak use welded parts so i'm uncertain of their usability, but you can get their unwelded version below!

KORMORAN

bgTLtgB.png

The HSK-8 Kormoran was originally launched as the "Stiermark" but was acquired by the German Navy and converted into a disguised merchant raider which disguised itself as a merchant ship and was used for commerce raiding. The Kormoran sank 68,000 tons of shipping during its time in the ocean before fighting the HMAS Sydney. It was scuttled following the battle, in which it managed to sink the far more powerful HMAS Sydney.

Progress on the ship-It is essentially done! Unfortunately due to the version of KSP i'm running 1.0.5 (for the reason of Kerbpaint working in that version for OS X), the NAS mod torpedoes just sink. Occasionally on launch the ship sometimes suffers failures on launch.

HMAS SYDNEY

GDS1Q7G.png

The HMAS Sydney was an Australian Modified Leander Class Cruiser that had lots of success in the Mediterranean fighting Italian warships as sank two of them with little damage to the ship itself. She was headed toward Fremantle when she encountered the Kormoran. In the battle that followed, the HMAS Sydney caused serious damage to the Kormoran but at the cost of the ship itself—and all of its men.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Help find music for the video

A potential logo for the project

Help write the captions for the video (maybe?)

(I don't expect anyone to do this, not necessarily) Help get Kerbpaint working for the newer KSP Version on OS X/In General?

Stunning work man! Truly.

You really know how to put a good looking boat together.

I noticed you didn't directly show pics. If you take the link and just paste it onto the post it will display just fine.

Thanks! The photos are fine on my end; I'll fix them and see if it works for you.

The building process is done, and i'm ready to start recording! I've perfected both ship's sinkings and ironed out the problems I was facing earlier like infernal robotics not working (by just using BDA radars to direct guns). The torpedoes seem to be working now for some reason, but Sydney's torpedo tubes seem to have trouble turning, which sometimes happens but  might as well start filming anyway.

An update on the progress of the project: I've been doing all the filming I can but unfortunately progress is extremely slow what with the very bad performance of 1.0.5, and the fact that the BD Armory guns rarely fire in unison, shoot off into the sky, or simply refuse to fire 90% of the time. I've gotten to the destruction of Sydney's Bridge but considering i've probably only filmed maybe 30% of the scenes in the movie there is still a lot to go and most certainly there are no promises that I can get any video available for Nov 19 (the 75th anniversary of the battle), but I can promise the release of the craft files.

Additionally, it would be greatly appreciated if music for the video could be found.  *and I must say, I wish I could work in 1.2, but no such luck. :(*

Notes-If you would wish to lower the part count via welding, here's a recommended list for reduction

The rigging-you'll have to piece together the struts by memory buy you'll be fine besides that

As a fan of warships and naval combat in general, i have to say that beautiful work once again :D.

I should be able to look at some good music tracks for the film today.

Gues i should have read the post a little better.

HMAS Sydney is out but for those who want a bit more flair to the ship you'll need the small boats on the deck! Since there's quite a few aboard Sydney i've put them together onto one craft. For those who just want it for effect on the ship I recommend welding the boats like I have done for my replica. The motor boat is rather unstable and tends to tip over rather easily.

  • 2 weeks later...

Filming is mostly done with all that is left being Kormoran's last torpedo and the sinking of the ships. Here's a couple pictures from some scenes so far.

Sydney appears to try to ram Kormoran but misses.

Partway in I added the tweak scaled SRBs to give off a permanent fire effect that lasted longer than the stock explosions and the destruction FX. (Unless of course the SRB is destroyed)

All in all I hope to have it finished by Mid-December.

(And keep looking for music for the video!)

Sorry for it taking this long.

I have been thinking about what music might fit, and the only ones that come to my mind that would fit is:

The Medal of Honor Allied Assault soundtrack, and the Battlefield 1942 soundtrack.

As for the individual tracks form those OST's, it's more personal preference, but i do have some suggestions.

I would suggest using either:

or

for the sort of "stealth section" before the battle starts.

And any of these:

as the combat music.

I really suggest you take a listen to the rest of the tracks in these OST's to see if there are ones that you think will fit better.

But again, the choice is yours buddy .

Here a few tracks that i think would fit to when the ships sink.

And here are some tracks for when the ships are on  their last legs.

(oh, and fun fact, i was playing BF-1942 yesterday and MOHAA today. I really do love those games and their OST's).

@kapteenipirkThanks! This couldn't be at a better time now that the filming is now finished (unless I missed something)! The sinking of the Kormoran is now done, and soon i'll start editing the recordings into one piece and start subtitling it!T0clxUG.png

I'm almost done putting together the footage, although the cuts are obviously extremely jumpy, which will require more time. The audio is unfortunately messed up because I have to heavily raise the rate the video plays at, which will mean that i'll need separate audio files (which take a very long time), and even that won't align perfectly with the video.

Here's a transcript or whatever for the movie: i'd like some feedback on it to see if I might be missing details or anything.

(expect a few grammatical/spelling errors)

Spoiler

November 19th 1941

15:55

HSK-8 Kormoran

The Kormoran, armed with 6 15 cm guns (one of which was removed from the SMS Seydlitz in 1916) had sunk 10 ships and captured an 11th when she was sailing off southwest of Carnarvon, Western Australia.

A ship, first appearing to be a sail boat was sighted. It was soon revealed to be a warship—the HMAS Sydney, a Modified-Leander Class light cruiser which had sunk two Italian warships an year before.

Theodor Detmers, the captain of the Kormoran orders his ship toward the sun, go full steam ahead, and to action stations. (Speed was soon limited to 14 knots by the failure of the No 4 Engine)

HMAS Sydney signals ‘n n j” (“You should make your signal letters”)

Those on board the raider do not understand the signal.

Later Sydney uses flags to indicate “VH” (“Hoist your signal letters”

Kormoran responds with much delay “PKQI”, the callsign of the dutch vessel Straat Malakka, which Kormoran is disguised as.

HMAS Sydney falls for the bluff and asks the ship’s destination

Kormoran responds with “Batavia” The engine aboard Kormoran was repaired but was kept in reserve.

Kormoran then sends a false distress signal that Straat Malakka was being stalked by a raider.

Captain Burnett closes Sydney to only 900 meters off the starboard beam of Kormoran which meant that Sydney’s advantage in firepower was lost. Kormoran has the advantage of surprise. She appeared to signal “IK” the inner letters of Straat Malakka’s secret callsign.

17:30

Sydney signals “Show your secret sign” The Germans have no idea what it could be…

Kormoran raises the German war ensign

The Kormoran decamoflauges and only 6 seconds after the order, the first shots were fired, missing.

Sydney replies almost instantaneously but all shots miss.

Kormoran launches two torpedoes

Kormoran’s second salvo destroys the bridge and her gun directors, likely killing Captain Burnett and his officers.

The third and fourth salvo knocks out HMAS Sydney’s forward turrets

The fifth salvo is aimed at the waterline with one shell destroying the walrus scout plane.

The following slavos continue to target the waterline

HMAS Sydney resumes fire—her Y turret’s shots miss high

However the X turret’s shot passes through the funnel and explodes

The next shot burst explodes in the auxiliary boiler room knocks out her fire-fighting equipment

Both shots exchange fire, with the last shot from Sydney damaging the transformers for the engines

One of Kormoran’s torpedoes strikes Sydney under her turret

Sydney turns in an apparent attempt to ram

Kormoran’s 10th salvo tore off B turret’s roof and wrecked the housing of A turret

17:35

Sydney passes behind Kormoran

Kormoran turns broadside to unleash her broadside, and her engines would fail soon after.

17:45

Sydney fires torpedoes—they miss

Kormoran continues to bombard the Sydney, firing hundreds of shots

17:50

Kormoran’s last shot comes at a range of 6,000 meters

18:00

Kormoran launches a torpedo, which passed astern

Sydney slowly limps towards the coast

Captain Detmers gives the order to abandon ship with no way to prevent the fires from reaching the mine hold. The Kormoran was to be scuttled. By midnight all abandoned ship.

25 minutes after the demolition charges were exploded, at 00:35 the Kormoran exploded, sinking stern first.

During the night HMAS Sydney sank, underway at 1.5 knots.

The torpedo proved to be fatal, with the bow snapping off and the ship sank in minutes.

Out of Kormoran’s crew of almost 400, 20 were killed in action with another 60 dying when their raft sank.

All 645 men were lost aboard HMAS Sydney.

Only a carley float and a lifebelt from the Sydney were found, although a second Carley float with a corpse that washed up on Christmas Island is suspected to have come from the warship.

Due to the loss of all onboard, numerous conspiracy theories have arisen, including the involvement of Japanese submarines and illegal ruses. However these have been disproven.
