High FPS with probes Low FPS with Kerbals

Recommended Posts

Hi guys !

I recently started playing KSP again version 1.2.2. I love the stock game but i do throw a couple mods onto the game just so it's more fun.

However i have a really annoying problem. If i run a mission with a kerbal i get really low FPS (15-20 kinda unplayable). However launching probes i get normal FPS (45-60). Interestingly enough if i run the stock game, it's the same scenario. It's just not as noticable (in stock game kerbal missions with 30-40, probe missions like in the modded around with 45-60 FPS)

It would be really cool if someone could help in which mod is the culprit or if there is a change in the stock game which is the cause. (This would never happen to me in previous versions of KSP)

Here is my modlist:

All of the mods are managed through CKAN so they all have their proper dependencies installed.

I run the 64-bit version of KSP in 1920x1080 borderless windowed.

System Specs.:

Acer Aspire v3 772G laptop NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 4GB (slightly overclocked) Intel Core i7-4702MQ 2.2-3.4GHz (slightly overclocked) 8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM. (The overclock shouldn't be a concern i take really good care of the laptop's cooling and i do regular maintenance on it's cooling system, just changed it's cooling fan for a brand new one.) running Windows 10.

PS.: I know it isn't just a couple of mods ^^" but i did run similarly harsh modlists on previous 32-bit versions of the game without any problems.

Unfortunately, that's the sort of thing that's practically impossible for someone to just look at and answer the question.  Could be just about anything.

The usual answer is tedious but probably unavoidable:  figure out which one it is, by process of elimination.  That is, try running with only half the mods installed.  Did it get better, or stay the same?  That tells you which half of the mods the culprit is in.  Then take that half-of-the-mods, and install half of that, and keep repeating until you've whittled it down to just one.  Then you can go post in that mod's thread to ask about the problem.

The other possibility is that it's not one mod that's the culprit, but an overall system-performance thing, which presumably be indicated by "it gets faster when I'm running a lot fewer mods, regardless of which mods they are."

About the only other thing I could suggest would be to maybe crack open the KSP log file and see whether it's getting spammed with gazillions of error messages.  It won't necessarily be so... but it could be.  (Suddenly crappy frame rate in certain situations can sometimes be a symptom of "something's throwing lots of exceptions".  Exceptions get logged, and the stack trace in the exception may point the finger at what code is doing it.)

Yup just did something similar and found it.

If texture replacer is set for real reflections, switch to static or none and check again.  I had low fps when an EVA Kerbal was on screen.

It was G-effects. Also while i was at it tested some things with it. Accelerating time made kerbals unconscious and other weird things happened and as i stated it causes you to have half of your FPS you would normally have. I checked the debug tool and there aren't any exceptions being thrown around.

This is also a good example for others if anyone else have similar problems check if you have G-Effects installed. I still don't know if it's a problem with G-Effects itself or if it conflicts with any mod(s) on the install. If you have any thoughts on this it would still be appreciated and may be enlightening for others.

Thanks for the help guys! ^^

Wow thank you so much man, I've been looking for exactly the same thing for forever. With 180 mods installed going one by one just isn't an option, but it was totally just G-effects, 100% of the way. Went from 1 fps to 30 with just removing only that. Have you let the mod author, Ser, know?

@Ratchet Hundreda, I am the author of G-Effects mod and I'm quite upset it causes slowdowns. Recently I've been struggling for FPS too and did a special check if it may cause any troubles and found none. Most likely the slowdown was caused by a conflict with some other mod. Could you check the two following things: 1. Is your KSP.log repeatedly spammed by some error? 2. Have you such slowdowns with only G-Effects and no other mods installed?
