I really need better information on the specific impulse of the BE-3U though. I suspect that it is around 430s +/- 10s (same as what we were saying up thread) but only because my best analogue is the J-2 which isn't even the same cycle. If the BE-3U actually has this performance, they're looking at 55-60t to LEO although they'll probably have to fly a slightly different flight profile due to the lower TWR which may impact the payload. Less thrust on upper stage - steeper ascent - less horizontal velocity on stage sep - easier to RTLS the booster (or smaller braking burn needed if using a drone ship). Easier booster recovery may outweigh the payload penalty from increased gravity losses.

Easier booster recovery may outweigh the payload penalty from increased gravity losses. I'm not sure how this information will be helpful but by my calculation, the baseline dV of various upper stages are as follows: New Glenn (metholox): 6.8 km/s at 45t, TWR: 0.84 (estimated) New Glenn (hydrolox): 6.8 km/s at 55t, TWR: 0.32 (estimated) Falcon 9: 6.8 km/s at 13.3t, TWR: 0.76 (according to @sevenperforce, this is the limit of ASDS payload to LEO) Atlas V 421 (Centaur): 3.7 km/s at 13.6t, TWR: 0.26 I have updated my spreadsheet a little since I last posted performance numbers so this is a little more conservative than previously posted. It still reflects a 2 engine hydrolox New Glenn upper stage; TWR can be improved by adding more engines at 1362 kg (conservative estimate) each but that directly impacts payload capacity. Not bad. It can probably outdo FH for BLEO payloads.

sh1pman
Imagine if the first passenger is that crazy flat-earther guy who made a steam rocket to reach space. That would be hilarious.

CatastrophicFailure
Sorry, Jeff, without some details (like first manned flight), I ain’t getting up at 6:30 on a Sunday. because of course Jeff Bezos himself and/or one of his minions personally reads this thread and cares what I say in it. and I mean actual Minions... like the silly yellow guys who speak gobbledygook... because we all know Besoz totally has Minions.... lots of Minions... tater
If this happens over the summer, I'm gonna just drive down there. I lack the will to head down after dinner tonight and camp out, though (it's a 5 hour drive or so).

tater
Yeah, the horizon distance from the Karman line is ~1100 km, and my house is only ~600km away from the launch site.
