Russia doesn't seem to have any experience with SRB's, let alone Hybrid Rockets. Well... The thing is, the Sarmat must squeeze into the old Voevoda launch silos as a cost-saving measure. Solid missiles are bigger pound-for-pound, so instead they used Makeyev, who specialize in extremely space-efficient SLMBs: And NOBODY has managed to get hybrids to work in a military capacity. _Augustus_
http://www.spaceflightinsider.com/organizations/roscosmos/putin-lays-priorities-russias-space-program-cosmonautics-day/ Info from this article: Federatsiya test flight in 2021/2022 Russia wants in on LOP-G Lunar lander based at LOP-G by 2030 SHLV by 2028, launch from Vostochny, pad needs to be built before the rocket Federatsiya might fly to LOP-G before the SHLV is done. Perhaps a rendezvous with a Proton Stage 3 and Block-DM in LEO/MEO? Oh look, another stupid, pointless, ultra-expensive SHLV without any sensible payloads. Well, on the bright side, it's very likely to be cancelled after one or two flights, like N-1 and Energia. "The share of launch vehicles is as small as 4 percent of the overall market of space services," Rogozin said in an interview with a Russian television station. "The 4 percent stake isn’t worth the effort to try to elbow Musk and China aside. Payloads manufacturing is where good money can be made." Or, as they say in Russia, КДРЦT. (Just kidding. They don't say that.)
tater
Actually, maybe they should think in terms of clunky---but reliable and cheap to build---space hardware that can go up on LVs that are basically not mass-limited for payloads. Ultimate Steve
Seeing as the NSF thread has next to no info, the fact that this is a more secretive payload than usual, and the fact that launch is in 30 seconds, if there is one I don't think I'll be able to see it.
