Look at the mounting bracket to the left of it. That's in a sort of mirror position from the hole. Likely a mistake for where to drill the hole for that bracket.

That’s quite a mistake. Missed by 15 cm or so.

Look at the shape of the wall, though. It's mounted on the flat spot adjacent to where the diameter decreases.

Maybe it was after lunch (with a certain clear beverage to wash it down (not water)).

Read my earlier posts.   After the sheet metal is cut to size, you mark and then drill all your holes.   This allows you to get the drill exactly where you want, without having to wrangle a drill into the correct position.  Also, I would not be surprised if those holes are punched, not drilled.  Either way, they are done before bending.   And before painting.   The correct holes were there before the paint was applied, the hole in question was done after.

Are you referencing the actual build instructions for the Soyuz module? I haven't seen build instructions this detailed for parts that are hand fabricated i.e. drilled holes by hand. At an assembly level where pilot holes are in 1 part and holes are drilled to match at assembly, parts are held together with clecos as holes are drilled and rivets installed, I could see maybe a misplaced hole but these didn't involve that detailed of instructions either. The idea being, the longer the instructions, the less likely someone is to read them. (same applies to forum posts)

I have no idea if any holes even are supposed to be drilled by hand. I was addressing the suggestion that somebody's drill slipped while drilling something near this area, and I can't see it happening. Unless you were supposed to make that specific hole in that specific place, a drill wouldn't be kept in general vicinity.

I'm more familiar with how these procedures were followed in military, working on ICBMs. I've seen manuals I probably wasn't supposed to. But that's where Soviet space program takes its root, including Soyuz spacecraft specifically, and very little has changed in the way the rockets are built in Russia. I can try and see if any of my old school friends who went into aerospace still work on anything Soyuz related to try and confirm it, but I highly doubt that the procedure changed fundamentally.

"The results that we have received fail to provide an objective image [of the situation] to us. Further work will be continued by a commission created by the [Roscosmos] corporation itself. The situation is far more difficult than we have expected," Rogozin told reported.

So they don’t really know where the hole came from.

Do we know that that part is bent and not extruded? Also should one want to tap a thread in the hole wouldn't that have to be done after painting? Otherwise paint would clog the thread right?

It could be possible, but again, drilling those large holes one those weird angles would be very difficult.  And extruding those complex shapes would require a lot of different dies.   Bending can easily be done on a a press brake, and a skill tech could knock out a good portion of the bending required for the craft in a day, for a lot less cost than extrusion.

It could clog it, but you'd probably still drill first for proper location, and maybe even tap, then paint, and then quickly tap again to clear the threads.     But yeah, tapping after painting makes sense, but the hole would be there already.  God forbid if the guy who drilled this hole ever laid hands on my taps, they'd all be shattered.

It's in MS-09. It's scheduled to be up there for a few more months yet.

Is it possible that they'll come home in MS-09 first before MS-08, considering the latter hasn't had an integrity breach ? Or would that play havoc with the fuel they're storing ?

It's unlikely that they'll extend the on orbit time of MS-08 since they don't like to keep them up for much over 6 months. In the past, they'd send short missions to swap out Soyuz so that long duration crews would have a fresh craft but I'm not sure they've got a spare ready to go and as long as MS-09 isn't leaking it should be ok to keep to the current crew rotation schedule.

Raises a question about how such an unskilled worker got assigned to the construction of a spaceship.

Keep in mind, modern Russia is absolutely no Soviet Union. Their economy is basically the same as Mexico, who isnt trying to maintain a prestige space industry.

Prestigious or not, noone is going to hire a worker who doesn't know how to drill to do drilling.
