Triop
So I'm starting a new challenge for myself: Drive from the Northpole to the Southpole. I will use real time to see how long it will take, meaning the clock starts as soon as I've started a new sandbox game. First I have to set up the event by flying to the North and South pole to place start/finish flags. To keep it realistic the planes have to return to base, so having enough fuel is important. If I have problems on my way I will allow service help, but the clock will keep ticking, no F-5 or any saves are allowed. I will use no mods or coding, this will be totally vanilla. Day 1: Flying to the poles and placing the flags: North: And South: Delivering the buggy, electric, top speed 100 kph, piece of crap to be honest.... Triop
The rover went out of electricity after 40 km We need to do better than that, clock is ticking, we need a new design. Sending out Val to replace the buggy. TBC
Triop
Day 2. We are making progress, the flats are very boring to drive, a toothpick holding down the "W" key really helps. Finally we are seeing some dunes. Checkpoint 1 has been set. Next up, find some green. TBC Edited September 3, 2018 by Triop
HansonKerman
Nice! I’ll be following the adventures of Jeb! Very cool, @Triop

qzgy
I think you could use this as the start for an elcano. Maybe.

Yeah, I'm planning on making this a challenge IF I make it. I hope to finish before December so I can turn this into a holiday event. Day 3. It's very annoying that I have to be in the car for solar recharging. I still have Val in the old buggy and I want to pick her up, guess I'll have to wait till night time. One of my goals is to get anybody home (without using recovery). I hope I can make some km today without damage... Triop
It's going great so far, only small dunes. Driving towards the sun keeps my batteries full, thats good news. The buggy is really crap, topspeed 30 m/s (108 kmh), but I don't see Jeb complaining. I renamed the buggy "Samurai" because of the solar panels. Triop
Checkpoint 3 We have lots of electric charge left so we continue. Checkpoint 4. Out of power, Jeb needs to camp here. Time to get Val back . . . TBC Edited September 4, 2018 by Triop
kurgut
nice! When you will be done, next challenge could be to do a poe2pole challenge, in Real Solar System! As I think to it, it would be veery nice, with a life support mod, this will force you to resupply your rover time to time. And your rover should have the ability to go as ship too f course, or deliver the ship when needed. Bonus points will be given, if the route is passing by the top of the Hymalaya mountain.. Triop
"I'm coming Val !" Val's buggy is out of power, we have to wait for sunrise before we can load her in. 15 minutes before day 4... Triop
Day 4. Sunrise, loading up the buggy. Docked. Ready to go, but first we must recharge the Samurai. TBC Edited September 4, 2018 by Triop

Why don't you make them more rugged/armored, and with jet engines for added speed (not flying). Spoiler I always get so paranoid/stressed out when driving rovers that are less armored than tanks

Mostly I keep it as light and simple as possible because I need to fly the buggy to the pole. I choose electric motors because the don't need refueling, only recharging. I admit the driving is extremely boring, but I like boring, boring is good. Anyway, the Samurai is driving again, slowly but secure... P2P I will make this a challenge as soon™ as I finish. I would hate it if somebody would do the challenge now and finish before me (which is pretty easy). I would have no reason to finish this topic, and I do want to go all the way. Meanwhile: Day 4 is going fine, I did some nice boring km's and planted checkpoint 5. Batteries are still full, so the drive continues. TBC

Triop
Fatique is playing parts after a couple hours of driving, I oversteered allmost flipping me over (drove 4 seconds on 2 wheels) Stopped to change my pants... Next route, should I go red or or go the safe orange route ???
Ultimate Steve
Red, I'd say, some hills to relieve the monotony and speed it up a bit. Unless you can phys-warp. Then the orange would probably be faster because you don't have to intervene as much. I'm not cut out for long distance driving. I'll quicksave every 5km and get cocky and the one time I don't save is the time I crash after 50km of effort.
