I'm pretty sure he's full of it... but after visiting my parents tonight, my dad and I were watching the Falcon heavy thing on The Nat Geo Channel.  I was talking him through all the cool points, which he fully appreciated being an engineer.    And then we talked about the SpaceX booster "fail" the other day.   But then he was going on about a repurposed Saturn V Booster that was supposed to be the newest thing, and that they went to launch last week, started the engines, and then shutdown. 

Now We have too many launch threads to dig through them all, and googling "crazy dad Nasa story" isn't getting me anywhere.   So any takers on a Heavy launch that was aborted after igniting the engines in the last few weeks?

Parents... :rolleyes: I was watching one of the first Falcon 9 landings, and my mom came to check what got me yelling so loud. She took one look at the booster touching down in a cloud of smoke, said "Oh, it's from one of your space games." and went back on her merry way. And she watched lunar missions of Apollo program live! I felt so alone...;.;

Yeah, it was the DIVH launch attempt. Apparently the mains did not actually start (the shutdown call was probably just on the checklist), the flames were the normal ignition of excess H2 around the booster.

Obviously zero relation to Saturn, however.

I'm one of those parents ;) OK, maybe a different kind...

I picked my son up early from school to watch the FH launch (the nice thing about private schools is that I don't have to pretend it's for anything at all).

For the average joe it never really matter how things are made. Esp. if it's not in their interest.

Not every people appreciate it, but I suppose that's the job for those who're interested to incite the appreciation.

H-1? I would have assumed it came from their J-2 work (that being hydrolox, vs the H-1's kerlox).

No, sorry,  the RS-27's were derived from the H-1, the RS-68's were new newly built. My point was the Delta family does have a Saturn heritage, but that that heritage is now no longer flying.

Not everyone pays attention to the details.  My father couldn't even tell you the names of the space shuttles.

The RS-27 seems to be confused with the RS-26 (SSME) here. The RS-68 is (i think) derived from the RS-26.

You have a typo there, the SSME is the RS-25 which was developed from the HG-3 which was supposed to be a performance improvement over the J-2. The RS-68 was developed as a cost effective engine to be used in expendable launch vehicles thus its use in the DIV. It doesn't really have much in common with the RS-25 other than fuel. Construction is different (channel wall of the RS-68 vs tube wall of the RS-25), the RS-25 is completely regeneration cooled while the RS-68 has an ablatively cooled nozzle, RS-25 is staged combustion while the RS-68 is gas-generator. They maybe incorporated some "lessons learned" from the RS-25 but I wouldn't call that derived from.

There is still a connection. The RS-68 was designed based off of the proposed STME, a simplified SSME for the proposed National Launch System of the 1990's. Of course, the resulting engine was very different, but technically that strenuous link does exist.

Well, the Thor engine eventually became the H-1, so it comes back around... the Saturn haf Thor (the first stage of Delta) lineage.
